Description Artists do know well the meaning of that.

If you don't want to pay for art, JUST ADMIT IT and stop treating artists as fucking idiots XD Spend your money in whatever you want but DO NOT LIE. Because lies hurts more than truth. The excuse of being "poor/broke" is getting into annoying levels and we have to deal with that. Everytime.

This is also only representing REAL LIFE situations, with CLOSE FRIENDS or FAMILY. How come would artists go and attack our internet followers this way??? I'm SORRY you thought I was attacking you and thought this was "personal" LOL

Disallowing comments because I have no time to reply to everybody nor read all your opinions. I'm not asking you to agree with this. Everybody have got their opinion, right?

Also, sorry for my grammar. My first language isn't English. Period.

True, but the reasoning can differ. Some folks don't want to hurt your feelings, rather than thinking you're an idiot. Some folks have a budget and a list of pre-selected things they're bent on purchasing, and may want to avoid questions as to why on earth they'd spend their money on that rather than what you're offering. A lot of people get bullied into purchasing things either by peer pressure or by being nagged by someone.

In a way, people are broke, even when they have money available. The same thing goes for the term 'Starving Artist'. They can still be a Starving Artist if they're making $600 a month. If they only make that much, chances are the only thing their money is going to is bills and rent, with just barely enough left over for groceries. Different products means different values. Who's to say the iPhone isn't a better investment than your artwork at the time? It could be if you stop looking at the iPhone as an entertainment device and one that can be used for social media and marketing for their own career.

This also sends a negative message to both parties, because while your intent is to say "Don't lie!", you're making the person who's given the lie sound like an idiot---the same thing you don't want them to think of you as which prompted the message in the first place. Not to mention both of the characters aren't in the same situation. You have one who is prompting you to buy something, whereas the other is prompting you to acknowledge something.

I think the proper word for this is disingenuous or liars.

Hypocrite would be the "broke" character doing the same thing in the 1st panel.

Hypocrite means to profess to hold value they do not posses or partakes in actions that contradict said values.
Like a person who is an anti drug lobbyist but also sucks down cigarettes a pack a day. Or a PETA member who has a wardrobe full of real fur.

This iPod guy's is just a liar (or didn't have 12 bucks at the time) who possibly thought your work was not worth 12$

Hypocrite does not mean liar.

Most people can't actually handle the truth, and on the occasion of being told that their comic is juvenile and absolutely lacks technique and therefore won't be bought, would launch a hissy fit to the high heavens. And thus, hypocricy thrives. Long live hypocricy.

That is not hypocrisy. That is basic economics.
He can't afford your $12 comic because its not worth $12 to him. He can enjoy a ton of other quality comics for less.
An iphone (any smart phone) is a miniature computer. It is certainly worth several hundreds of dollar.

It sounds kinda catty of you to judge someone for not throwing their money at you because they need it for something else.

If I bought everything that friends or acquaintances tried to sell me simply on the basis of "Oh, well, it's only $10," I'd go broke fast. That's a little over an hour of work for me. Just because we're friends or I know you doesn't mean that I should be made to feel guilty for prioritizing my spending on something that isn't yours. Even if I like your product, it doesn't mean I necessarily need to own it, and if I say "I don't have the money for that" it literally means "my budget does not allow extraneous expenses on things of this nature at this time." My biggest pet peeve is people who sell like this. It puts the potential buyer in an awkward social position when you proposition them like that, so of course they're going to react the way they do.

kenoja In reply to CCCQQQ [2013-04-01 07:13:18 +0000 UTC]

Totally. It's the ARTIST that creates the problem here in the first place. He comes FLYIN' at the poor sucker pretty much demanding a sale, like you owe him. Not only do you owe him, but he can sit in judgment on your entire financial situation. But really the problem is caused by the in-your-face behavior of the "salesman", he creates an awkward social situation so yeah, people will say whatever to smooth it over. Just friggin' immature bullshit.

Ugh, I hate friends who try to push their shitty projects on their friends and expect them to buy it just because of that. I'd also hate it if a friend told me I was a liar for trying to at least somewhat politely turn them down without having to say "Well, no thanks I just think it's shit."

I'll buy it if it's good and I want it, just like the rest of the world. It's insulting to "use" friendship in this manner, imo.

AND the term "hypocrite" doesn't really apply here.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Bonewick [2013-04-01 06:48:05 +0000 UTC]

It's a priority and presentation thing.
If you present it like shown above, and you are told that the buyer is poor, it's because you presented in a manner that is compliment fishing.

Not to mention not judging others for their buying. they will do what they do with their money, if you find an avenue of art not working: Try a new avenue.

That being said, it's not hypocrisy as much as preference, which people are allowed to have.

Personally, I say "I don't like what you've made" but I'm a straight forward person. It's not "treating artists like fucking idiots" it's an attempt to keep your spirits up.
This is more rude than the possibility of being told your product sucks or is not someones' cup of tea.

Sometimes, when I say I'm broke/poor, I am includding all the planning I've done to get something else I want (a BJD f.e.) so I might not be broke/poor right now, but I will be at the end of the plan and probably don't have much to spare, if any at all. .m. I've always thought it looked as if I am lying and I guess, I could have said 'Sorry, I am saving for something else', but yea, sometimes, it might just be that the person has money, but already planned on what they'll do with it so they don't really think they have money in their wallets...

They lie to each other to avoid hurting each other's feelings but the artist's anger is hypocritical. Rather than be the honest person they want the consumer to be, they do the same thing and hold back their tongue. This reveals how they are both hypocrites, however, for acting like they care when they honestly don't. Neither of their lies are white lies because they can damage the relationship, as is shown by the artist's anger juxtaposed against the consumer's beaming face.

The consumer saying they would love to buy the comic but are too poor to do so while hiding the other half of the truth creates a false impression to the artist. The artist is then left wondering why didn't the consumer take a mere $12 out of their $700 savings when they said they would love to buy the comic. The consumer will also wonder if the artist is being sarcastic about their congratulation. By avoiding a small conflict an even bigger conflict has been generated.

This situation alludes to a greater problem in society where politeness and honesty have been unchained from each other due to people's avoidance of conflict and the resulting freedom to act irresponsibly unchallenged. The comments on the work itself further reveal these broken chains. People are also honest but not polite.

if I might comment
i have been at both ends of this situation many a time and i will tell you now that i would rather hear "i have something else i would rather spend my money on" over "i dont have the money" every time because its the truth. most artists i know agree with this statement it is far more hurtful to be lied to because that is to say that you dont matter.

as for being on the other side all one need say is β€œi do not have the money right now because i am currently saving my money for another purchase that i have been planning on making. I’ve made this statement several times and have always gotten the same reaction "okay thanks for taking the time to look at my art^^" and normally they run off to show the next person (we artist's are accustomed to rejection it comes with the territory of being an artist lol)

also to point out that if one has $700 i have a distinct felling that they could spare $2
the other assumption one can make is that the two people in the comic are friends and one of the underlying ideas is that friends support friends meaning that you don’t buy the comic because you want the art or something like that you purchase it because it is important to your friend. not to say that if the friend was selling the comic for a far larger sum of money that this could still apply but at $2 it is a low enough sum that it makes sense that if one cares about their friend one would support them.
its not about the money it’s about being lied to.
I apologize for putting my neb where it does not belong and hope that this comment has perhaps made clearer the meaning of this short comic
