Description Alright folks, I bring you another quality tutorial. You may be wondering how I could ever top my last tutorial, the Definitive Vector Guide, and I was wondering this as well. Thankfully, I think I have produced a work which will appeal to everybody on DeviantART. I learned these tricks showcased in this guide from studying actual submitted deviations. So, instead of thanking me, thank the community!

Also be sure to thank #digitalmedia who highly suggested my involvement in the creation of this tutorial. You can find them on dAmn to discuss a wide range of digital media topics, including this tutorial.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me.

Wait, wait. I'm having trouble with that part about the brightness/contrast or whatever? I'm trying to use the values you told me to, but it's a very advanced tool and so I'm kind of lost. All the other stuff was great though, taught me all sorts of new stuff. The lens flare looks especially amazing.

Dear god. You actually scared me. I had to read it about 5 times before I realised, "There's no way 'tea would be serious about this". You had me going there, though. Lens flares, I ask you..
But after I figured it out I laughed so hard.
Good job.

And don't forget, all the popular girls love the monochrome filter!

It's all about the monochrome AND lens flare. Glad you figured it out though.

Awesome! I don't see the picture you so skillfully edited in your gallery however. How could i possibly +fav it and suggest it as a DD?

Altough in your tutorial you already reach the peaks of marvelousness, I felt the need to add a couple more suggestions for those seeking some alternatives to your method:

  • Something you didn't mention is black and white. Everybody knows that any given picture automatically looks a lot more interesting and artistic if turned to black and white. If for some mysterious reason one of your pictures doesn't come out as beautiful as you'd have liked after the shooting, consider turning it to black and white (bw or b/w for computer-photography experts). It will look a lot better and gain a new artistic life! To do so, use Image -> Mode -> Grayscale. (other methods exist, such as channel mixing, but those are way too much complicated to be actually useful)

  • If the background (i.e. the bedroom or graveyard) of the stock image you choose remains ugly even after you severely blur it, it would be a good idea to cut it out altogether and replace it with beautiful blackness (it may be refered to as "negative space" in your comments, but that's ok, don't worry). To do so, use the same select tool you used for the blurring and then use Edit -> Fill... and pick a nice shade of blak.

  • Very heavy compression is an awesome way to save bandwidth. The best thing is, because jpeg works so well, you can now actually post pictures as large as they come out of your camera, but very heavily compressed! Show the world that beautiful portrait in all its 6 megapixel glory! People will be blown away by the sheer aesthetic impact of it, magnified by the large size.

  • One last comment regarding the comments you add below the photo. A notorious way to make the picture more interesting is to add a mysterious comment. A dark poem of yours would do the trick, as would a short series of random symbols (e.g. "~*~@~*~") or a little story about yourself, about how you feel. People do care about those things. And if you manage to provoke pity in the viewer, he/she will be more prone to comment and +fav your artwork.

  • Well I hope some of those tricks will be of some help! But l33t skills come with practice, so post post post your pictures! Post till you fill the deviantart!
