Warning due to DAT ASS
Okay this is going to turn to be more of a step by step instruction/tutorial about how I begin developing my characters. As you can see on the page I labeled a few parts from 1-3 to show how I usually begin this whole process. I will explain numbers 1, 2, and 3 thoroughly enough as I can so you can try and understand my planning process a little better.
One: Body consistency
The first thing I like to do when I'm planning a character is to practice the body size, and it's many different angles and proportions. To do this, I use this little technique I like to call "The swimsuit model". Notice how a few of the lines cone around to almost make it look as if the figure is wearing swim wear? Those lines help me keep the construction of the body consistent from which ever angle, direction, or pose is taking place. Down near the groin area notice how the lines bend into the privates. From this point, they allow correct placement of the legs from whichever angle I draw them from, and this also helps me in placement for the rear part of the body. The lines that go horizontally from the chest down to the privates help with measurement during the drawing process of those areas, and again, they help me keep the body correct.
So why do all of this before just drawing out the character first hand? This is mostly because I'm looking for specifics of what I want. I like to be specific when I'm looking for my body type, and there are plenty out there, big, small, average, such and so forth. By practicing it's consistency,it helps me keep the body the way I want it for the character, including when it comes to adding clothes, and body expression. This also helps me memorize the way the body is supposed to be when I draw it, per say Elk's body for instance. His build is hidden underneath a sweater most of the time, but because I use the "Swimsuit Model" technique, I've memorized his muscle placement, abs, chest, you know, the works and stuff. Now I have a female body consistency chart with me, but I can't seem to find my male one. These two are located in a separate sketchbook on my computer desk, =3= I wish I never ripped them out though.
So the message I'm trying to tell you for this point of the tutorial is Become familiar with your body, it's type, and it's expressions and consistency. It's helped me a whole lot, and I may be wrong and such about this, but heck, it's helped me, so I'm sure it'll help you in as well 8D!
Two: Facial Structure and Wigs
I make making a character seem so complicated xD, seriously, I do all these little things first before I actually move onto the next stage of the development. So if it's another that I love to do it's choosing between what facial structure I want, and the type of hair that I want.
These are mostly based off of my own mind ((Obviously)) and when I have multiple amounts of styles that I want to use for the face and the hair, I draw them out, and choose which is my favorite. In this case, I chose number 3, so I check marked it to make sure I refer back to that one when drawing the face. Now most of these hairstyles look the same, I know, but it was my favorite among the three, but I still use them for this character. Why? You'll see a couple of pages ahead from here.
I usually start with the hair when I'm drawing, never in my life have I started with with the face unless I have to use consistency once more. This is information that will be explained later on when we get a couple more pages in.
Three: Eyes
This one is very simple to explain, there's really no need for me to elaborate on the topic of eyes. What I do for this part of the development process is draw out all of my different eyes types to see which one will match with the face. I usually tend to choose two eye types, for serious, and non serious business, and of course, one eye brow type, which I've drawn above the eye styles.
Everyone knows how to do eyes I'm assuming, so I'll just end this part of my construction process here.
