Description i have always loved the word OLD, i love everything from the past, it looks different and lovely, and since i love music too, my father's OLD LP's were inspiring to shoot, and yes this song [link] was more motivating to start the series, but won't be able to complete it for now as i'm traveling, maybe will find something there ..
BTW, this LP is Marvin Gaye's, (How Sweet It Is To Be Loved By You) ..

Dark room with an OLD 1000 watt flash light ..

Love the small focus, which you get with f2. Also a fine concept, old versus new.

called LP ??! which is the shortcut of ??!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JohnClavin In reply to LenaDavid [2011-12-17 23:34:51 +0000 UTC]

Aaah OK. They were known as Vinyl LPs (which stands for Long Playing) particularly here in Europe. They were 12 1/4 inches in diameter and rotated at 33 1/3 RPM when playing. Some older ones played at 78 RPM and others still, mostly containing only voice were played at 16 RPM. The smaller ones, the singles, were 7 inches and rotated at 45 RPM but back in the 80s, some chart hits had longer versions which were on 12 inch Vinyls and were called 12 inches [link] . You could immerse them in hot water and mould them into cool flower pots. And the brilliant thing about vinyl was that the tiny tracks you see on them are analogue sound and if you look closely you can see the waves and if you spun them, you could play them with a sharp pin pushed through a paper cup. And thats WAAAAAY more information than you wanted

Ooooooh lovely lovely LOL .. .. you know, i only thought it is just one type one thing and you put the LP on it and that's it .. Wow .. i LOVE these stuff very much .. ..

but tell me, only voice ??! aren't they all only voice ??!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

JohnClavin In reply to LenaDavid [2011-12-18 21:43:45 +0000 UTC]

..They were all only audio, data was never put on vinyl to the best of my knowlege. But some were voice only without music, such as foreign language lessons. There may be a little intro music, but it didnt need to be high quality and so they were designed to play at the slowest setting, 16RPM. The reason being that with the same size record, but rotating at 16RPM, you could get maybe 3 hours of lessons on a single record. The higher the quality required, the higher the spin rate needed to be, 33 and 45 were the common two speeds used for HIgh FIdelity (Hifi) music. Its directly analogous to video compression on YouTube where 240p is perfect for videos when low quality audio and video is acceptable and in return you get a small file size and more manageable streaming. Now for example, If you had a 3Mb limit folder, you could squeeze 5 mins of 240p in there, 3 mins of 360p or 30 seconds of 1080p-HD. Similarly, On vinyl LPs, you could only squeeze so much on and so quality was often traded off against running time (storage).
