Description
In Fantômas, the character Fandor lives under an assumed identity, shielded from a false murder charge by Inspector Juve. At one point in the first book he goes disguised as a woman (which is why he's dressed like this here), under the mistaken impression that his father will clear his name. The Fantômas series began in 1911, created by Marcel Allain and Pierre Souvestre. The master criminal Fantômas was one of the most popular characters in French crime fiction. I'm in the process of reading the second book "The Silent Executioner" aka "The Exploits of Juve", which is why you're getting Fandor fan art
Inspired in part by the incomparable Aubrey Beardsley

Love the silhouette in the back, especially that the eyes have he same colour as the background.
Fantômas is one of my favourite characters, even though I've never actually read the books (it's another item on that infinite 'to do' list, right next to 'read Arsene Lupine books'). My first introduction to the character was through the Louis de Funes movies in the 60s. Those are comedy movies though But they have Mylène Demongeot in them!

Thank you, my friend! I haven't seen the 60s films, although I did see the first silent one from 1915 I read the first two books and I highly recommend them!

Nice. I know that Fandor was a son of Fantomas's ex-friend/worker? And probably the bride of Fandor (Helene Gurn)was the daughter of Fantomas...

Ah, Aubrey. Please give credit to Aubrey Beardsley, too, Mr. Fox.

Well alright then!! Beardsley was the first artist I ever really gravitated to - around 12 yrs old or so. He taught me the possibilities of pen and ink so he's kind of an icon to me.

Oooo that's so cool! It was about that point in my life
that I discovered Giger and he and Dali became my
mentors via their books

Dali is soooo soooo great! But I've met some folk who didn't
appreciate him, oddly enough

It's the bad rap he got later for doing, ahem, fraudulent art business practices - he's become a bit tainted and well overexposed. We'll never know if his selling of fake art was a dadaist statement or a bit of greed.

I was actually unaware of that... but Dali did
often say he was more surreal than the surrealists
and he seemed to put that into practice from time
to time

I believe he was making nihilistic and dada statements by flooding the market with art by his students instead of by him. Poking his finger at the art world.

Mission accomplished! The art world really
needs an enema sometimes.

Very good poster for Fantômas. I like how the black silhouette is transformed into a red skyline in the background and also the figure of Fandor in the foreground. Also, I'm a long time fan of Fantômas!
Do you know A.J. Raffles stories by E.W. Hornung?

Well, I haven't read it yet, but I did finally obtain a copy of a Raffles collection at my local paperback exchange!
Thanks for the tip

should I get into them? I'm always on the lookout for
more cool writings from that period

Raffles is highly recommended. He (and Bunny) would deserve a TV series of his own.

I will search for those stories when I'm next at the used bookstore
TV shows are alright, but not as good as old film serials

oh mh.... pff I am as much shocked and offended that I am unsure if I enjoy.

Because they are from a great tradition of fiction, have lots of memorable characters,
cool stuff, and Fandor dresses as a girl
Why be offended?
