Description
The darkened streets lie empty nowAs cities crumble in the fall;
The wild hath crushed the works of man
And vines bring low the concrete walls.
Long have the iron towers stood
And with their bulk obscur'd the sky,
But fire sweeps the repressed land
And like their masters, they must die.
O hark! A brilliant nimbus bursts
Of light and flame and poison dire!
The eternal foe hath proclaimed
His return to earth with eternal fire!
Like shrines to a forgotten god
The plinths of yore shall melt away,
To leave the ground forever scarred
By broken atom's burning gaze.
Now from the ancient, mystic East
Let fel winds begin to blow,
For now the Morning Star hath set
And with the sundown comes the snow.
Like to the beasts are men once more;
Gone are dams, walls, and railroads bold.
In the fall resounds the call
And deposed die in winter cold.
