Description
I wanted to start creating science fiction type scenes. This was inspired by the Land Cruiser thing from Starwars 4 (a new hope).I wanted to create the illusion of motion at high speed so i added a dust cloud below the vehicle and made it disappear at the horizon.
I completed this piece then noticed that the jet stream cloud from the engines spoiled the high speed illusion, so i made the jet stream disappear into the horizon and the illusion was nearly complete.
I took the image into photoshop, copied the vehicle, moved it slightly, blurred it with the blur tool & added some gaussian blur then removed the parts of the blurred layer that overlapped the ship.. it was complete.. a high speed cruiser travelling at high speed!

Looks cool. Like the ship design and thanks for explaining how to do motion blur.
One thing you might want to do for your tutorials is get adobe acrobat, if you can afford it. Should be able to get acrobat ver 4 or 5 pretty cheap since they are old. Think the current version is 6.
Adobe acrobat can download a site and turn it into a pdf. Basically you go to the site with the tutorials you want and download the tutorials. When you are done, you have a pdf file of the tutorial to use whenever you want. Don't have to worry about the site disappearing and losing the tutorial.
I have stuff about wings3d being a good free 3d modeler.

Reader does not do it, you need adobe acrobat, the full version. Saving the file will work.

Looks cool, i like the dust and smoke trails. The blurred image of behind the main render is good for giving impressions of speed. I was thinking of doing some blur effect for my train model but not sure how to. 3dsmax is okay, you can get educational versions which sell for cheaper then full commercial. A few years ago when i did a 3d animation course in my Uni they were selling for about 199$AUS (i THINK, or it could be more, not quite sure). max is alright, ive been using it briefly on and off for the last few years, but since i dont have much spare time with uni and stuff i didnt really get to learn all the complex stuff. But still, for its Polygonal modelling and other features its still sufficient for me , and i still dont even know how to use the other 90% of it. (im using 3dsmax R3.1 still, hehe)

warning... this may be quite confusing:
i actually cheated for the blur i opened it in photoshop then selected and copied the cruiser onto a new layer. i moved it up and to the left slightly so it kept in the perspective of the dust and trails. then, i added a motion blur in filter>blur>motion and played with the little dial until i was happy with the 'directon' of the blur and then reselected the cruiser by select>reselect and deleted the blur that appeared in front of the cruiser on the background layer.
it sounds more difficult than it actually is, im just not the best teacher in the world. in truth, i'm not a teacher at all

bryce does rule.
if you have any opinion on infini D, i'd like to know what it is so i know if it's worth having a good look at it or not

...yes, expensive..... 3d studio max, you say?? on a scale of one to 10 how would you rate it for ease of use and shit??

ummm...i just kinda jumped into it like every other program ive used. The learning curve for someone with little to no experience in 3d applications will be quite steep. I've found that the best way to learn anything is to dive in and use whatever resources your given to the fullest. I would suggest that you familiarize yourself with some of the lower end 3d apps before diving into max. Not that max doesnt kick major ass, but it is quite the robust program. I mean that it has alot of stuff built into it that previously required several different apps. I suggest MILKSHAPE3D to get a better idea of what a true modelling program is like. It's great and its free. Play with Bryce's Keyframe animator, max's is alot like it. If you can get your hands Curious lab's POSER that is a great app for learning how to add bones to your model and rig them up for animations. Its also a good way to learn morphing targets (like making a face smile or frown using a single control). And last but definitely not least, INTERNET TUTORIALS. There is an unfathomable wealth of knowledge out there that is contributed by communities made of members just like THIS ONE HINT HINT. After you feel comfortable with the basics, then you should consider a licsensed copy of max. on a one to ten scale of usabilitu for beginners, i give max a 10 for a not too awful friendly user interface and about a million controls. GOOD LUCK WISH YOU THE BEST AKI

i had a play around with poser and had lots of fun fucking around with the walk editor thing on it. but unfortuantely, i've since got a new pc and my poser has fucked up.
thanks again for your help

i thought i captured it quite well, do you think the jet stream going off into the distance is too much or just right??
i was arguing with my mum & my brother, they think it's too much. Its not too much coz the dust cloud goes into the distance aswell.
I've not been on dev art all that long, and your the first person that has really appreciated my work enough to add it to thier favourites... thank you

yeah well we 3d artists aren't always appreciated as much as we'd like to be
as for the stream... well it is in the desert and appearing to be super fast, so it fits.

you've just made my day. i thought it was just me that was under appreciated.
considering i've only just started getting into 3d design, i'm picking it up quickly. All the 3d deviations that are shown have been made in bryce. I've got infini D aswell, but i've not had a decent look at it.

its quite difficult to create an ornate science fiction ship type thing when you dont like science fiction things...
i take offence at the word "simplistic".. if you can do better, then go for it!
Glad you think its cool anyway... thanks

i meant simplistic as in minimalistic, sort of a... less is more... type deal. I didn't mean it to be insulting

i wouldn't say i was insulted..
just not many ppl i know appreciate good 3d design, so i'm always getting " constructive critisism" from ppl who wouldn't know where to start making 3d scenes/animations.

what do you mean "props for your pic"??

umm i've never worked with bryce... but you can try a demo version of maya i think you can get it from there site... thats what i use but it watermarks everything... "props for your pic" is ebonics for the white people saying " i praise the artistic work you have done"
