Chapter Ten- Answered.

“So, Thomas, you decided you wanted to take me on. You decided that you are the chosen one that will destroy me. Oh, how much of a mistake you have made. I will give you one chance; one opportunity to redeem yourself. In due time the Shadows will rise, and one of you will be chosen. I will make you test your faith. I will make you jump into the Shadows. If you make the leap, and the dark inside of you is true, then I shall bless you with my dark blessing. If you fail, or deny my offer, then you shall be cursed for life. You will be haunted by my eminence, you will be hunted by my shadows, and you will be face to face with death. Where are your gods now, when the world is being consumed by death?”

“Tom’s gonna join the Shadow,” Jericho said, rolling his eyes.

“Where are your gods now?” Jordan repeated.

“Yo!” Tom yelled. “I’m screwed!”

“Why are you screwed? He said he was gonna bless you!” Jericho argued.

“Yeah, you were ‘chosen’,” Jordan sighed.

“Oh really?” asked Tom. “I totally misread that!”

Jordan decided to listen to this one without Spartan so she wouldn’t be terrified again. He left Spartan with Sonja and they went off to find horses.

“So, sorry if this sounds rude but, what are you?” Sonja asked as the walked through the woods.

“Well,” Spartan laughed. “I’m human, I suppose. I was born to my human parents but… When I was seven they died and Mianite felt bad for me so he gave me the abilities necessary to live with him and Lady Ianite.”

“The abilities necessary? What does that mean?” Sonja asked.

“Oh well, wings since we lived in the sky. Healing powers since I was still pretty much human. There’s probably other things but I can’t remember.” Spartan rubbed the back of her neck.

“Wings? You have wings?” Sonja grinned.

“Oh well, not anymore. Dianite took them away, I mean. I don’t have any proof it was him. Lord Mianite told me and I trust him. He said he sent pirates to take them from me. Lady Ianite rescued me from them.” Spartan stared at the ground as she walked. “I can’t lose my lady.”

“If you don’t mind my asking…” Sonja bit her lip. “Why does Dianite have it out for you?”

Spartan closed her eyes and sighed. “When I was seven years old,” she began, “Lord Mianite said that if I succeeded in recovering a book that Dianite had stolen from him, then he would heal my mother. She was really, really sick. Papa said he didn’t think she would make it so I prayed for Mianite to help and he did. He needed the book to do it and I did recover the book but Dianite found me. He told me I could go with the book but only if I remained loyal to him and I broke that promise. Lord Mianite doesn’t allow me to worship Dianite… he says he’s hardly a lord at all.”

“Oh, Spartan.” Sonja put her arm around her. “Does Jordan know?”

“No the Captain barely knows me at all. It’s not as easy to talk to him as it is to you.” Spartan smiled at her. “So you see, Ianite rescued me. I owe her my life but not only that, she raised me. She’s like a mother to me and I’ve already lost one mother to Dianite. I don’t want to lose Lady Ianite.”

“Well, I promise that Tucker and I will do everything in our power to help you get Ianite back,” Sonja said happily as she mounted a horse who immediately loved her.

“Oh thank you, Sonja. I’m thankful to have friends like you. The only other girl I’ve known was Lady Ianite.” Spartan laughed.

“Well it can’t be that bad. You’re the only other girl I know. There aren’t many girls that come around here, you see. For a while it was just me. Maybe if Ianite were around it would be different but it’s great not being the only girl now.”
