i like this work, it is beautiful in its simplicity, it have interesting title, it raises feelings and questions.
art can be anything for the viewer. for me it is a cold letter without sens and feeling.

Monolithic and solid, but without being "dense".
Very nice!
Are you a fan at all of the work of Moshe Kupferman?
He's someone I wish I could have spoken with before he died.

Dead letter looks so final. Like a death. It seems to be almost a burial site. At 1st I thought it was something that needed expressing that had been written but never sent but then I saw all the little lines in the bottom that look like those bar codes the post office uses when they are running mail through a machine, so it WAS posted.
Which makes me thing this letter goes unanswered or has information that the receiver can not bare to get (a Dear John letter, or "I am sorry to inform you your loved one is dead" etc. That kind of thing; or maybe just a rejection letter..."we have seen your art/ story/ application & we cannot use you/it at this time"...).
P/S Now that I have read your description I know that I am not too far off the mark.
Maybe she did not get your note or maybe she did get & through not answering lies your answer.

I really do love your comments Gloria...you can be shockingly accurate!
I don't know if she got the note or not so I have to assume she got it and is simply being rude. I had a romanticized version of her in my head and the reality is probably that she was bad to be around...destructive actually.
I don't know her now and she certainly doesn't know me...the intention of the note was to initiate a meeting to lay the past to rest and possibly be friends.
I suppose some people change and move on while others stay stuck. Sad really...that's what went into the painting...the sadness. The past is sometimes best forgiven and forgotten and I think this piece was cathartic for me...an ending!

what are you trying to communicate with this piece, and what are some questions you've asked yourself that have led you to this end result?

hmm...overdoing it...I have screwed up countless painting by over painting them...that has stopped now...so I guess it is technique practice...
I think you should get a canvas and throw some paint around!?

It's gorgeous - good work! Composition-wise reminds me of a Rothko.
