Once Dead Round 3 Vs Toren, Jaya, Caspian, and Spinner

Past Experiences Part 2-The Cure

XXX---XXX

(WARNING: SLIGHT BLOOD AND GORE...Yes this is me writing out of my comfort zone for the sake of this round...)

XXX---XXX

Lightning and bullets were shooting very close to him as Eclipse ran. Not long after leaving the forest with his sample kit and some MREs provided by Illi and Barlow, he was ambushed buy a young Elf with lightning powers named Toren and his demon-blooded bodyguard, Jaya. Two other beings were above him but the darkness and the misty atmosphere made it hard to make out what they were.

Being almost cornered was an understatement. He would do the shadow double trick but sadly with the flying beings he knew he wouldn’t have the chance without being seen doing so. Thinking fast, he veered to the left back into the forest and created a shadow screen behind him in order to give his pursuers the slip while the natural canopies from the trees provided a blind to the ones above. The dampness of the fog would help hide his scent from Jaya’s senses as he managed to find a hollow tree several yards from the shadow mist to duck into. Untying his trench coat from around his waist, he covered himself and caught his breath, unzipping his backpack to silently tell his programs to keep silent.

“Where did he go?!” Toren was soon heard yelling in frustration and Eclipse did his best to stay silent. “How did he manage to disappear like that?!”

“He couldn’t have gone far,” Jaya’s deeper voice soon sounded. “Caspian, Spinner, have you two seen him?”

*Caspian and Spinner?* Eclipse thought. *Those must be the flying beings that were above me.*

“Not until he ducked into the forest,” another male said as he heard wings flapping down, no doubt that was Caspian. “The tree tops blocked him from our view and I usually am good at seeing in the dark. He’s a quick and smart little guy, I can give him that much.”

“I must say,” one of the voices of Spinner soon said and Eclipse can’t tell if they were male or female…if they HAD a gender that is. “He’s a slippery one…but not like our new friend.”

A hideous roar was soon heard as well as a few screams that faded in the opposite way. Knowing they would be distracted for a while, Eclipse soon got out of his hiding place, re-tied his trench coat, and left the forest to get to the ship. He wasted enough time playing killer hide-and-seek and he needed to get that sample.

Several soldiers were around the hotel now so he kept to his stealth, using his pointed ears to hear them come and go and took every opportunity to get closer while hiding behind various walls and barriers. Soon he was close enough to see the large ship…but it was heavily guarded to no surprise. Activating Nacht’s ability to create a double of himself, he sent it out to distract the soldiers. It taunted them and ran off, causing them to give chase, another one of the Hotel’s patrons also joining along.

Smirking, he quickly and quietly slipped through an opening and disappeared inside just in time for the clone to be shot and dissapate. *That was close…But how long will my luck last?*

Meanwhile outside, Toren’s group came running to the gunshots. “What happened?”

Mir, one of the ones Eli recruited for quarantine, copied Toren’s voice to answer.

Spinner soon chuckled with interest from all three of their mouths. “Well, well, well! He’s a bit smarter than we anticipated.”

Rory, another one Eli hired, was also surprised. “Something tells me it was just luck he managed to hold his own against a vampire, a few humans, and the Twins’ tower! But this…dang I can’t tell if I’d like or hate to meet him in battle!”

“He’s certainly a very strategic one,” Caspian soon said. “He knows the best time to fight and the best times to flee and in this case, with this virus around, he chose the option to not fight and try to help get a cure as quickly as possible.”

Light sounds of coughing was heard within. “It also seems he’s somehow still in the lighter stages of the virus as well.”

“Shall we go in Toren?” Jaya asks and the Elf nods so the two of them followed while the rest waited outside.

Eclipse just managed to hack open a door when a coughing fit rose up from his chest, thankfully there was still some power in this place. The virus was trying to fight back but he wouldn’t have it. *No…not this time! I’m not letting this one win like the other one did!*

The sound of crunching metal was soon echoing through the halls after he calmed down. Cursing to himself he quickly hacked the door closed and continued running. But this place was like a maze and he needed a map. Thankfully he found a room with a working computer and got to work. His pendant connected with the console and the HUD screens lit up, automatically translating the alien language inside since this isn’t the first time he was on something related to aliens. It took him a good 20 minutes to finally download a map because his fever was coming back slightly but he managed to sit down with an ice pack and let it cool down before continuing.

Of course he happened to run into some mutated rats that somehow came in by gnawing through the metal. Taking out his Spellblade, he managed to cut a few of the smaller ones down easily but the larger one had developed armour so he decided to heat it up with fire then blast icicles at it until it cracked. The rat monster tried to get a few bites out of him but he was too fast and managed to get onto its back and stab his blade deep within the creature, killing it with some of its blood spraying onto him.

Taking a few minutes to catch his breath and wipe off some of the blood from his face he pressed on, following the map to the best of his abilities to find the alien remains in the deeper areas, hacking open doors and closing them behind him. He saw the ship had collapsed in a few places so he knew it was falling apart so he hurried.

It took him a few hours, with taking a moment to switch with Moonlight to weaken the virus again and stopping a couple of times to eat the food provided in the MREs, but eventually he found the place he was looking for and, thanks to Deadberry no doubt, the door was already ripped open. The carcass that remained was huge, about a good 10 to 12 feet across, which explained the size of the ship. Its orange blood was oozing all over the place and it gave off a horrible smell that made him wish to throw up, but he kept his composure.

Now one would just quickly grab the nearest piece and high-tail it out of there but he decided to be smart, figuring that this creature would have some sort of special organ or glands that would allow it to make venom or the virus. He soon dug into his pack, letting the programs out to keep watch for Toren’s party, and grabbed the equipment required for this part. A set of outer clothes to keep the acidic blood off of his clothes that he quickly put on, a container made to resist the acid while he gathered his prize, as well as a normal sword to cut into the beast, kindly provided by Barlow so he wouldn’t ruin his Spellblade, which New Moon and Nacht took to keep it out of the blood.

Nodding in satisfaction he soon got to work. He cut into the side of the alien with the normal sword, suddenly thinking of that one scene from Star Wars when Han Solo saved Luke Skywalker from hypothermia on Hoth by cutting open his mount to stuff his friend inside and wondered if this is how he felt in using an alien creature to save a life. He soon found a few glands that would fit Illi’s needs nicely and carefully cut them out in order to put them in the container. The whole process was delicate and he was feeling hot in the suit but he was determined to get this sample to her and get the cure made so that he would keep a promise for once.

As soon as the last gland was inside the container, Moonlight, who held it open for him the whole time, sealed it tightly and put it in the bag. Eclipse felt relief that he managed to get part of his mission done but he knew it wasn’t over yet so he got out of the blood and quickly stripped himself of the outer outfit, burning it so the virus wouldn’t spread any faster than it had. He also left the other blade behind to melt in the acid since he had no more need for it.

But just as he went back into the next corridor, a lightning bolt almost hit him and he soon saw Toren and Jaya.

“You’re a sneaky one aren’t you hedgeboy?” Toren said, looking frustrated and highly annoyed. “I don’t know how you managed to navigate yourself in this ridiculous maze but your running ends now! Jaya, take him!”

The larger demon soon rushed him but Eclipse was faster in dodging him, freezing the floor to make him slip. Jaya soon began shooting and he parried most of them, one grazing his face and causing him to bleed a little yet it didn’t faze him. Toren was preparing another lightning blast that almost caught Eclipse off guard but hit the ceiling instead. Jaya also transformed to pounce on Eclipse but the hedgeboy was too fast still and the ice on the floor made it difficult to land.

This went on for a while until Eclipse heard the creaking sound of weakening metal…right above Toren!

“LOOK OUT!” he soon shouts before the corridor began crumbling down so he jumped on the Elf, shielding him as everything caved in, his hair beginning to turn white.

Of course this was caused by another mutated creature and when Jaya saw what happened to his Prince, he freaked and began attacking what seemed to be a mutated lizard.

Toren began to come to after Eclipse jumped on him. He saw he was surrounded by debris but was still alive…and not alone as he saw a white-haired angel-like hedgeboy healing his wounds. At first he thought he was dead but soon saw Eclipse in a program form as well as the other two.

“What happened?” Toren asked in surprise and confusion.

“A crazy monster decided to crash the party as well as part of the ship,” New Moon replied sarcastically. “Thankfully Eclipse and Moonlight switched in time to make a shield around us all so we weren’t crushed.”

“Of course we can’t really die,” Nacht said in disappointment that Toren wasn’t dead but flinched at the warning looks that New Moon and Eclipse gave him.

“Why on Earth would you save me?” the young Elf asked in confusion. “I was hunting you down to be quarantined.”

Eclipse sighed. “Because you were suffering enough from the virus. I made a vow to Veronica that I would help to get a cure and it wasn’t just to her but everyone else that is around as well, including you. I have experience with something like this, except it started to alter my memories and I couldn’t think rationally or tell friend from foe. It was part of a trap made by this horrible witch named Para. It also was the last few moments before I died in that place and yet my soul survived and was altered so I could cheat death to have another chance. Yet the memories still haunt me to this day. I didn’t want to have others suffer to something similar to what I had experienced so I agreed to help Illi. Once we succeed, not only will the virus be destroyed and lives will be saved, but I will finally be freed from my past demons.”

Toren could see the pain and determination in his eyes and realized that he was on the wrong side. “I’m sorry…”

“There’s nothing for you to apologize for,” Eclipse said. “In all honesty whoever or whatever is really in charge of this place is really playing a sick game and we’re all pawns in it. If I succeed in these games, I’m going to ask to see this person and give them a piece of my mind.”

Suddenly Toren’s stomach growled, loudly. This broke the tension with some laughter as Eclipse switched back into his body and grabbed his bag to rummage into it. “I really don’t have much food left but these should be enough until your bodyguard digs us out.”

He took out a few candy bars he saved out of the MREs and Toren happily grabbed one to eat it. New Moon chuckled. “Never met anyone who didn’t have a sweet tooth.”

They all laughed at that as Eclipse began eating his candy. And just as they finished, the sound of moving metal and a beam of light shone down that grew bigger to show Jaya, Caspian and Spinner’s faces seeing relief that Toren was alright.

But just as Caspian and Spinner were about to grab Eclipse, Toren said, “Let him go.”

“But why?” Jaya asked for all of them and the Prince smiled. “He needs to help us all and he did save my life.”

Eclipse gave a smile of gratitude before climbing out of the hole the lizard mutant made. He looked back with a nod and continued, feeling relieved that his mission will be completed.

Spinner gave a chuckle of amusement. “You really owed him your life, eh young Prince?”

Toren nods before he coughed a bit. “Out of anyone we faced here, he’s certainly one with a good heart.”

Jaya saw that the Prince was soon getting tired so the four of them left for the administration building.

An hour later, he found himself back at Illi’s lab and Barlow was waiting. “Well then, you look like you’ve been though hell and back there, lad. Did you get it?”

He nods as he took out the container. Barlow nodded in relief and let him inside where Illi was waiting and when she saw the sample, she was ecstatic.

“This is wonderful Eclipse!” she said in joy as she took it. “Now to begin the process. You can rest in the other room since this will take time.”

Eclipse nods, feeling exhausted as Barlow led him to an empty room with a bed. He practically blacked out as soon as his head hit the pillow. The programs worked together to put a blanket on him, knowing how tired he was, yet satisfied he had accomplished his mission. The best part was, there was no nightmares this time.

It took Illi several weeks, with some of those days spent making medicines that would weaken the virus and buy her more time, but soon she felt she actually made a cure from the venom glands Eclipse brought to her. During that time, she began coughing up a bit of blood from the virus but her medicines took care of that. All was left was the fact it needed to be tested and Eclipse wasted no time in taking the needle from her, willing to be a living test subject. If he needed to go that extra mile to keep his promise, so be it he thought as he injected the cure into his arm and activated his pendant’s HUD.

Sighing in relief, he soon turned to her. “It may not work as quickly in others like it has for me but it works…it actually works!”

“I better make more then!” she said in joy but then pulled out a book from her desk, the very book that usually was with Jon. “Here, take a page. You’ve earned it.”

Eclipse deactivated his pendant and smiled as he took the only mint-green page of his bunch as a reward to Moonlight for all of his help, restoring the passive barrier ability. But he felt the real reward was that for the first time in so long, he finally kept a promise and he felt happy enough to let a tear slip down his face.

An hour later, he went to administration building with her and when the soldiers saw they were no longer infected, they let them pass to administer the cures to the ones that hasn’t escaped yet. That included Toren, Jaya and Caspian. (Not Spinner though since he found out that they technically were a God and the virus didn’t affect them.)

“You succeeded,” Toren, feeling very tired from his fight with the virus, said in relief as Eclipse finished the injection.

“I did,” he replied gently as Illi administered the cure into the other two. “Just get some rest and let the antidote do the rest.”

The prince nods as he soon fell asleep. Jaya soon came to him. “When we first arrived, we were met with nothing but hostility and strangeness. You were the first to show us kindness and courage and for that I thank you.”

Eclipse felt a bit embarrassed by the praise but nodded in response all the same.

With this under his belt, he felt he can hopefully prepare for the next event of this strange funhouse of a world.

He looked to Veronica, who had a sincere smile on her face as her way of thanking him for keeping that promise.

OMAKE:

“By the way…and I mean no offence Spinner…but has anyone told said you remind them of a certain fictional character with snakes for arms?” Eclipse asked them and they looked curious at him.

“Not until now, why do you ask?” Spinner asked with a slight tilt to their head.

“Just curious…” he said, relieved they took no offence.

(Author’s note: This is actually reflecting my initial thoughts on Spinner because the first thing I was reminded of when I saw them was Baigan from FFIV. I told enterprisi this and she said she never heard of him but saw what I meant. )
