Description Son to Choto, Nyota; brother to Itikadi, Sujudiwa; mate to Kaomwa; father to Obadele

Hatari is a happy cub who views his twin brother, Sujudiwa as his best friend. Sadly, Sujudiwa's friendship with Hatari is an act, for in reality he feels nothing but contempt for Hatari and their myriad siblings and secretly plots to put them all out of their father's favor. For Sujudiwa wants to be King of the Mountain Keep, and the only way to get what he wants is to "convince" their father King Choto that he and he alone is worthy for the throne, and no one else. In Sujudiwa's eyes, Hatari is nothing but an obstacle standing in the way of his ambitions, so his "friendship" with his twin is nothing but a farce. Poor Hatari never realizes this for as long as he lives.

And so it is that Sujudiwa plays the part of Hatari's bestest buddy, even though it sickens him to do so. Fortunately for Sujudiwa, Hatari trusts him so and this makes it easier for him to come up with all sorts of great plans for mischief he and Hatari can get into together in the name of "fun"; the more dangerous the better. While at heart he is a good cub who enjoys attending his father's lessons, Hatari is always eager to play along with Sujudiwa's ludicrous ideas. At first, it is all a bit of a thrill to be doing what he knows is forbidden. He merrily carries on following his brother's lead until one fateful day he is caught in the act by one the pridesisters, who goes ballistic and roughly takes him straight to the King. Hatari is dismayed to find that Sujudiwa is nowhere in sight – his twin had run off before he was noticed, fleeing the scene of the crime and leaving Hatari to face his punishment alone.

Just as Sujudiwa had planned.

As Hatari walks the walk of shame behind his father, the disappointment on his mother’s face crushes him; his siblings point at him and snicker behind their paws, making him wish the ground would swallow him up; and the disapproving glares from the rest of the pride causes the skin beneath his fur burn with shame. Sujudiwa is there too, feigning shock and concern as he peers out innocently from between Nyota's front legs, yet all Hatari can feel is relief, relief that his brother was smart enough to have escaped. As he passes him, Hatari forces a grin and winks subtly at Sujudiwa, hoping to convey the message that he would keep him safe from their father's wrath. Sujudiwa just smirks where Hatari cannot see. Such a loyal idiot.

Choto leads his son deep into the underground caverns of the pride’s den, and when the two are alone, the normally mild-mannered King really lets loose. When Choto is done hollering, Hatari sits before him with his head hung low, sobbing quietly. After a long talk Choto finally lets him go, and Hatari runs off to hide, too mortified to show his face to the rest of the pride. Sujudiwa later finds him, consoles and thanks his brother for not telling on him. Hatari gives his twin a weak smile. They're best pals, of course he wouldn’t tell. As far as he knows, Sujudiwa would have done the same for him.

As he grows into adolescence Hatari strives to be more sensible, determined to never repeat the same mistakes. Although Sujudiwa tries to draw him back onto the path of mischief and risk, Hatari never lets his brother sway him, never wanting to be in that position ever again. He wants to be King, and up until the... -incident-... his father had been admiring his efforts to work hard and to learn. He wants his dad to be proud of him again, but unfortunately for Hatari, it seems that that one major slip up has cost him his chance of ever proving himself worthy.

While in reality Hatari had indeed been forgiven by his parents and the pride, Sujudiwa ensures that no one forgets the so-called "incident." Without Hatari's knowing, Sujudiwa whispers to their father that his twin has proven himself to be too reckless and foolhardy to be a good monarch; embellishing the tiniest of errors (or blatantly making stuff up) and expressing "concern" over his brother inadvertently putting others at risk, constantly bringing up "the incident" as an example. Choto comes to trust and value Sujudiwa's words of wisdom, eventually deciding that Hatari is not king material, but Sujudiwa - always the practical one in Choto's eyes - just -might- be. Choto probably would have allowed Hatari to stay in the Mountain Keep as a support to his chosen heir's rule, had Sujudiwa not talked his father into sending his brother off to another kingdom as soon as the opportunity arises.

Now firmly secured as a favorite amongst his father's few remaining sons, Sujudiwa is confident that he will win the Crown, yet he knows that his father still looks fondly upon his twin. Sujudiwa does not want Hatari around to steal his spotlight, so when the RiverLands King comes asking for a strong male to marry his daughter, he uses clever words to convince Choto into sending Hatari over the others. "Surely if Hatari remained here he would forever be reminded of his most foolish mistake, subjected to gossip and rumor and having to play second fiddle to the next monarch... whoever you choose," Sujudiwa carefully advises his father. "My brother is well-trained and he tries hard, and you needn't tell King Fakhri of his flaws. The RiverLands are our neighbours, so he will never be too far from home. It is perfect. He will be respected as he deserves, in a position of power as father of the heir, the highest-ranking male, and no one will know or look down on him for his past mistakes. It is for the best." Choto is saddened, for he had never wanted to separate the brothers which had once been so close, but decides that Sujudiwa's advice is sound. So it is with a heavy heart (and to Sujudiwa's glee) that Choto sends Hatari to the RiverLands to marry its princess, Kaomwa. Hatari is crushed once more, angry and disappointed in himself, yet he is understanding and still completely oblivious to his twin's machinations.

Upon his arrival to the RiverLands, Hatari is less than thrilled with his new betrothed, Princess Kaomwa. She just isn’t his type, and a bit of an airhead. She spends her days chasing butterflies, and her ringing laughter grates on his nerves. She's too happy by half. This... this overgrown cub is to be the Queen? Hatari shakes his head in dismay. It seems it is up to him to teach her how to be a ruler, as her father obviously isn’t up to the task. Over the following years, Hatari tries to get it into Kaomwa’s thick skull that she should grow up and act like an adult. Her father King Fakhri seems to actually side with him, making Hatari all the more sure that he is doing right by harassing Kaomwa to stop this childish playing and to take more responsibility as far as the kingdom as its people are concerned.

Yet once Fakhri is dead and gone and Kaomwa is Crowned, Hatari belittles his wife when she attempts to do her queenly duties. She is never good enough, and no matter how hard she tries she is always "doing it wrong" or her efforts are "substandard". In the end, she throws her paws up in the air and just lets him get on with it. She isn't even bothered when Hatari proclaims himself the “King” and usurps her position as the land’s official ruler. While the Queen hangs out with the pride lionesses like some commoner, it is her Consort who does all the work. While in a way this was what Hatari wanted - to work hard and be respected - as time goes on the anger he feels for himself continues to fester within, starting to spill out and affect the others around him.

Hatari breeds a son off Kaomwa, but after that the pair barely talk and avoid one another, living in separate dens miles apart. Once the cub is weaned, Hatari takes little Obadele away to live with him and to be trained "properly", since it is apparent that his wife doesn't have a first clue about anything and couldn't care less even if she did. Despite his intense dislike for his wife, Hatari feels his son deserves a mother - after all, Hatari was close to his own and he had no wish to deny Obadele of that sort of relationship. So Hatari regularly takes the boy to see Kaomwa, yet their visits are always ruined by Hatari's none-too subtle criticisms of his wife, asking her scathingly what she had been doing all day while he'd spent his walking the kingdom, fighting off rogues, solving conflicts amongst the land's people and tutoring their son - things she herself should be doing or at least attempting to help him with (even though on the few occasions Kaomwa DOES try, Hatari always ends up taking the reigns and pushing her away). Their visits always end with Hatari shouting and insulting Kaomwa, and Kaomwa giving Hatari and Obadele the cold shoulder. When things get really bad, the so-called "Queen" simply walks away, turning her back on husband and son.

While poor young Obadele is witness to the war between his parents, it does not help that Hatari frequently comments bitterly on Kaomwa's uselessness during their lessons. Nor does it help that Hatari, harsh even when in a good mood, is a very strict and demanding taskmaster who takes his frustrations out on others, including his son. And as Obadele grows, Hatari finds more and more flaws in his son and frowns upon the boy's childish antics. He begins to punctuate his son’s lessons and discipline with pain – a smack here, a hard cuff there. Obadele -will- be a perfect King, and there will be no repetition of his father's stupid mistakes nor any of his mother's lackluster attitude.

Hatari will make sure of that.

_________________________________________________

EDIT: I changed his mane colour to Uyihlo's dark brown. Because I don't see anywhere else he can get it from.

Hatari for , where Uyihlo's douchebaggery has its roots. Hatari is determined to mold his son into the perfect King, but instead he creates a lion with severe issues - Obadele blames his mother as much as his father for his rubbish childhood (she never intervened to stop the hitting) and has trouble controlling his anger. His hateful mindset is passed onto his own son, Uyihlo.

Also if anyone asks, I don't know what Hatari did and why it was so terrible (feel free to guess!), but the turmoil following the event left quite a mark on him for the rest of his life. Blame Sujudiwa for that. If you ask me, Hatari would have made a better king than Sujudiwa. Pity their father didn't realize that sooner.

Man, he would've been perfect in The Woodlands with Enqena or something! Such a shame he completely screws up the Riverlands for like three generations >_>

Yes, he is forever haunted by that "thing" he did!

Werebeurus was wondering where the sexist thing came from, and I was going to leave that up to you. But I was thinking that maybe Obadele sees Hatari belittling Kaomwa, and thinks that is how all females should be treated (with no respect). But he also thinks it's okay to "punish" via beatings, from the way Hatari smacked him around as a kid. The two mentalities combine to make Uhylo the sexist jerk he is.

That's a good idea, and I also suspect he sees his mom as "lazy", as she never DOES much of anything, while his father does all the work of ruling.

indeed!

there's probably also the angle that with his father always talking down about Kaomwa, he also thinks THAT is a sign females can never measure up. especially since his grandfather (Fakri) didn't think they could either! XD

Ohh, ohh, I know what he did! He and his brother found a wasps nest hanging from a scrawny branch way up on the side of the cliffs and above to the Keeps main sitting area. The boys found a way to slingshot a rock at it and knock it down, causing it to crash right in the middle of a big group of pride sisters. Before the panic that the wasps caused, one of the Pridesisters just happened to see where the rock came from and ran over while the boys were laughing their heads off. His brother heard her coming and ran off, but Hatari was still laughing his head off and didn't notice her till her booming voice sounded above his head. The Pridesister snatched him up and dropped him in front of the king, who had come to see what caused the ruckus. And Choto was really pissed since so elf the pridesisters had almost run off the cliffsides in their panic to escape the wasps. And since he endangered their lives with his little prank, Choto determined that he was NOT fit to be king, nor to be given another chance.

Werebereus In reply to Lil-Cheetah [2013-07-05 16:28:17 +0000 UTC]

I dunno really. I mean, it's entirely possible his disdain for mom migrated to other females...perhaps Hatari remembers his own prides hate and tells his son "If you're not a good king, the pride will hate you". You said Obadele develops anger problems down the road, so perhaps after Hatari dies, he goes "They don't like me? Well FUCK THEM. They're just a bunch of dumb females like mom. Who cares what they think?"

Lil-Cheetah In reply to Werebereus [2013-07-05 16:46:02 +0000 UTC]

Hm, I don't think there was any hate from his own pride. Choto learned from Valio, and like Valio, Choto spent time being a father to all his kids. No hate there. I think that Choto simply thought Hatari was too rash, thus the reason why he bars Hatari from being King.

But you're right in the sense that Hatari KNEW he didn't measure up back home, and he knew the reason why that was (but not that his brother's plotting was behind it). Therefore he becomes overbearing to Obadele and anything he does that Hatari doesn't like, he smacks it out of him. Hence why Obadele has some anger issues when he grows up. He's frustrated that his childhood was less than perfect and that his mother did jack shit to help him.

The Pride. "and the dirty looks the rest of the pride throw his way makes the skin beneath his fur burn with shame." is what your wrote. So maybe they dont hate him...but maybe he thinks they do.

How does this hate extend to the pride though? Perhaps Obadele hated his father and mother, but his mother especially since she was the rightful ruler, but did nothing with her power. She COULD have saved him and commanded the pride to rip the piss out of Hatari but she didn't. Obadele sees this to mean and female ruler wouldn't use power effectively and fails to see that it could have very much been the other way around?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Lil-Cheetah In reply to Werebereus [2013-07-05 17:10:33 +0000 UTC]

Dirty looks wouldn't necessarily mean that they hate him. I might change that actually - "disapproving looks" sounds better. Also I wouldn't think that Obadele believes the pride hates him... just that they have never forgotten (or forgiven) his stupidity.

Yeah I think Obadele would hold A LOT of disdain for his parents. He knows his mother is rightfully the Queen of this land and his dad is essentially a foreigner, but Kaomwa does nothing with her power (least of all rescue him from his dad's cruelty). In fact he sees Hatari belittling Kaomwa on a regular basis, and so as he grows up, Obadele decides that it is only the male's right to rule while females are essentially useless when it comes to ruling. Hence - sexist views.
