Mature content warning for nudity...of the female variety.I'm taking an art class to help build up a portfolio so I can get into the college I want. My teacher is someone I've known since I was little and she's been great. Today she took me to a studio that has a model come in every saturday. It's the first time I've ever drawn at a live sitting, so all I had was my regular size sketchbook, therefore, this wasn't as detailed as I would half liked it to be (especially her hands and feet). As soon as I got home I raided my piggy bank and went to the art store for some bigger paper. I'm really excited for next week. It was really challenging and the other artists were really nice.

It was fun. And there was a BYU animation student there who gave me some really good portfolio tips...and he was kinda cute! (taps fingertips together in evil super-villain fashion)

I'm curious...since I've never taken a *real* art class before, what is the purpose of a portfolio? (I'm guessing it's complied of drawings that you do, but why; what's it for?)

Mostly it's just to show your best work. People have portoflios for art, writing, design, acting (although theirs is usually called a demo reel) all of that. It's just like having a catalogue of yourself that you show to anyone you're trying to impress. Most art colleges ask for a portfolio in order for them to decide if it's worth their time to accept you.
