Lil Cal is from Homestuck, a web-comic written by Andrew Hussie and belongs to him. This pattern was created by me and is for personal use only.

im making a smaller version of this, i made all peices 75% the original size on the paper and put them together to save paper and ink, so i'll have a little lil cal XD
and i just put together a lil cal cosplay yesterday.
im so excited to use this! thank you!

Question, how much seam allowance do you give?
Like.. the amount of fabric left between the stitches and the raw edge?

So,I was a complete ditz and went to buy fabric, assuming I could use any kind. However, I realize this may have not been the best move, and now I am stuck with a question. I got a cotton type fabric, (sort of like an uncomfortable polyester dress shirt if i had to compare it to something) as this was available to me at the time. would this affect my sewing in some way? or should I go and buy fleece so it is like the tutorial?

Sorry to answer not my question, but it won't effect the sewing..
The doll just won't feel as 'plush' as fleece would, it'll actually be more stiff. Fleece would definately be better though.

I totally forgot but you might have a problem with raw fabric edges. Because felt doesn't ravel but woven fabrics do. If you're stitching a seam together that will be inside, it should be fine. But if it's putting a piece on top and stitching around, it might be a problem.
I haven't actually looked at the whole pattern though yet lol

Omg thanks so much for making this awesome tutorial O.O !!!
this was the first thing I ever srsly sewed (like except for things you do without even knowing how to do a back stitch) and this helped so so so much!
I'm going to cosplay Dave so I really wanted to have a Lil Cal sitting in the backgrounds and now he's finished and sitting beside me x3

the tutorial was really easy to understand even for a beginner like me and I look forward to sewing the smuppets etc later as well x3
(this got me really excites about sewing so I think I found a new hobby as well :33)

Working on him now...but where is the pattern piece for the shoelaces? It is probably right in front of my nose, but I don't see it!

Thank you so much for this, my friend who introduced me to Homestuck (which I have currently fallen prey to Hussie and believe Homestuck is like the greatest thing) but her and I agree that Lil Cal is the creepiest thing. So this is what I'm making her for her birthday.

since I'm stupid with sewing, do you think I could like use hot glue?
A lot of my older brother's cosplays are held together sturdily with hot glue, so I'm just wondering. If not, I guess I'll have to try the sewing machiene because ADHD hands for the win

ok so im on step 5, i guess to say, putting the pins on and turning the fabric around the head. but i've gone all around. On the back it looks like a wonton, is that normal? i havent put the second head part on. is that normal? do i just put the second part over it? and then sew the edges?

Broken-Fallen-Wings [2012-02-24 01:50:29 +0000 UTC]

I just bought fabric to make this, and I forgot to get white fleece... is there something I can use instead? (I have white felt and white cotton...)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lishlitz In reply to Broken-Fallen-Wings [2012-02-24 06:04:41 +0000 UTC]

the white felt should work fine. i used felt for his head on the one i made, and fleece on the rest of him. felt should be fine for hands, shoes, etc. it's not quite as soft and stretchy as fleece so just keep your stitches close together and tight so the seams don't pop open when you turn and stuff. good luck!

um...im a bit stuck on something and i was hoping you could help me...if thats ok ; ^;
i cant seem to attach the head on straight and pinning it is virtually impossible...do you have any extra tips on attaching the head to the neck? also is the head being floppy normal or should i stuff it alot more?
i hope this isnt to much to ask for, thank you TT UTT

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lishlitz In reply to Meow-Nya [2012-02-17 14:11:04 +0000 UTC]

hmm.. i would stuff the body and especially the neck very firmly. this should help his head from being floppy and hopefully help make it easier to put the head on strait. do your best to pin it, even if it's only a few pins where you can reach well, like the sides and back (i know it's a bit tricky under his chin). after pinning try doing a quick round of big stitches just to loosely tack it on (i think that's called basting). when it's tacked on you can remove the pins to get them out of your way, and then take your time and do smaller, tighter stitches to attach it more neatly and securely. the sides and under his chin will be hidden by the shirt front and collar so it doesn't have to be super neat or perfect, but the back of his neck does show a little, so do the best you can there. oh, and sometimes an extra pair of hands can help too! i've had my daughters help hold things when i needed it i really hope this helps some. sorry your having troubles. i'm here if you have any more questions

Meow-Nya In reply to lishlitz [2012-02-18 04:09:09 +0000 UTC]

Oh my garsh thanks for the help
I was able to sew the head on correctly with the help of an extra pair of hands P:
Basting basically did the trick
thank you SO MUCH
