June-La tinkered about in her workshop, tightening the final bolt on the engine block she was rebuilding, before stepping back to inspect her work.
"There," she said, "all done. A few quick tests, and you should be all healthy go go back into your body, Sweetie."
The warrant officer patted the engine affectionately and smiled. June-La gathered together her tools, slipping them onto a nearby pile before hooking up a computer array to the engine. She primed the motor, listening to it carefully for any sounds of distress. Sensors sprang into life, recording the performance and June-La nodded.
"You sound good, Sweetie, but let me just check the readings."
June-La turned to the computer, calling out.
"Ness, could you assist me please?"
A shimmer of light built up in the workshop, the hardlight holographic projectors activating, and a blue echidna materialized. The A.I looked almost identical to June-La save for her colour and lack of a bionic arm. She bowed her head and addressed the Warrant officer.
"What can I do, Ma'am?" Ness-La asked.
June-La directed the A.I to the computer.
"Follow those readouts please, Ness. let me know if you detect any anomalies."
Ness-La nodded.
"As you wish, Ma'am."
Together the two echidna women studied the performance of the engine, June-La happy with how the test proceeded. She looked over to Ness-La.
"All readings are at optimal levels, Ma'am," Ness-La said, an unspoken understanding passing between the 'twins'. "Would you like me to schedule the final instillation?"
June-La nodded.
"Yes please, Ness."
June-La started disconnecting the sensors from the engine, giving it an encouraging kiss. Ness-La smiled, her body shimmering as she slowly dissolved and went about her duties. The A.I.'s voice spoke out moments before her head vanished.
"If there is nothing more to do, Ma'am, I shall go and see how the children are doing."
June-La waved.
"Thanks, Ness. I don't know what I'd ever do without you..."
