Not quite sure I follow the reason why o0 is this for first impression with other rats, or with people?

with other rats. rats go to the rear to sniff when first meeting, like dogs do, and by putting it on their lower back other rats will lick it off for the taste and therefor 'groom' the other rat , and it will also cover up any strong musk the rat has and make them seem less intimidating.
