Description All of these Disney/DreamWorks/etc. flappers are getting re-polishes for the new '20s. They will have a new blog on tumblr, as well as a new folder in this DA gallery, starting New Years of 2020. All of these old versions meanwhile are going to be dubbed "WIPS." Chrome out.

Glance at Disney's Snow White, and you'll likely see an icon so familiar that you barely even notice its presence. Look again--especially after watching an old movie or browsing vintage photos--and suddenly you'll see  a young girl from the Great Depression era, stuffed into a fairy tale costume, while making no effort to hide her very '30s bob, bow and makeup.

According to IMDB, one of the earliest pieces of concept art for Snow White came from the artist behind Betty Boop, who drew a Snow White that resembled a '20s flapper (which would've been a dose of recent nostalgia for moviegoers of 1937). Walt Disney threw it out, because he wanted Snow White to be pure, chaste, and innocent, the anti-flapper. But even as the saint Walt cooked up, Snow White would probably have done well for herself in the Roaring Twenties. She may not have been as outgoing and "liberated," but she fit the the flat-chested, dollish, picture of eternal youth that so many flappers were trying to achieve with their makeup and breast-binding. It is almost certainly not a coincidence that Snow White is the youngest by far of all the "classic" Disney Princesses.

So, what's the story for this '20s version of Snow White?

It starts when an aging supermodel named Quennie finds herself in the custody of her young stepdaughter, who effortlessly fits the modern mold for youthful "beauty." In a jealous rage, "the Queen" uses her sketchy connections to hire a hitman to "get rid" of Snow White. But even (some) gangsters have standards, and Eddie "the Huntsman" Valentino finds himself unable to empty a clip onto the young flapper as ordered. So instead, he drives her out into the country, and tells her to lie low for basically the rest of her life. Snow finds her way to a troop of traveling circus dwarfs, in need of a maid, cook, and sparkly-dressed assistant. Unfortunately, a circus provides the perfect environment for that bitch stepmother to disguise as one of the "freaks" and trick Snow into eating a poisoned caramel apple...

I completely redrew my 1920s Snow White, after watching the 2013 adaptation of "The Great Gatsby" and realizing that a dress like Myrtle's would look perfect on Snow White.

This is the first re-draw I did of my earlier Disney flappers. Not being a huge fan of most of the "classic" princesses, I didn't put much effort into Snow White, Ariel, or Cinderella the first time around. If you're curious, here's the first version of 1920s Snow White I drew: www.deviantart.com/art/Eternal…

I do not own this incarnation of Snow White, which belongs to Disney.

Well, it cannot be help when Walt Disney rejected that idea for Snow White being a flapper in the Roaring Twenties. But in this fan art, it is fine for me, and I do not care what Disney distaste this concept.

Thanks!

I planned to redo all these flappers with art deco backgrounds, I should really get back to that.

That's quite an interesting story behind Snow White O: I wouldn't have known.
Definitely more down to Earth compared to her modern version.
That pose came out quite nicely
