Description "Come on, Bubblepaw!"
Specklepaw raced out of the forest, halting right in front of the body of water (she didn't know what to call it. It was a river, but nearly as wide as a lake.) that separated the clans from the unknown areas on the western side. The clan territories were stacked up, four neatly separated areas, making a giant rectangular shape. On the western side, the stream was the border between clan and... Well, who knows what. Specklepaw glanced up and saw the mountains far in the distance, beaming as Bubblepaw, the medicine cat apprentice, padded up to her. "Isn't it nice to get out of camp?" Specklepaw nudged Bubblepaw gently. "Yeah," she replied, kneading the ground with her paws excitedly. Specklepaw perked her ears, bounding towards a small assortment of stones, each taking a small leap to get to the next. Usually she would've been more cautious, afraid to get stuff stuck in her thick fur. But today, she had spent what felt like a whole moon trying to smooth it out, until she was finally sure nothing would get caught in her pelt.

Specklepaw leaped onto one of the stones, then the next, turning to make sure that Bubblepaw was behind her. Bubblepaw looked calm, smiling only slightly. Suddenly she prepared to jump, "Slowpoke," the orange apprentice joked, leaping onto the same stone that Specklepaw was on, then to the next, until she was on the very last one. "Hey!" Specklepaw called, dashing after her friend. "I bet you can't beat me to the other side!" She challenged, her pelt puffing out again. "I bet I can!" Bubblepaw giggled, leaping at pretty much the same exact moment as Specklepaw did. Specklepaw pushed off the stone immediately, but the other apprentice managed to clear one whole stone and land on the one in front of the young tortiseshell. "Beat that!" She joked, carefully jumping onto the next stone-- The last one. Specklepaw dropped into a crouch- hoping to get all the way to the ground with one giant leap. The water roared beneath them, and it seemed to be getting stronger. Wind buffeted her fur. The waves began to wash over the rocks, and she quivered at the feeling of the icy-cold water. Eyes narrowed to slits, she focused on Bubblepaw. Before Specklepaw had a chance to leap, Bubblepaw let out a yelp.

Specklepaw gasped. The stone the orange cat had been standing on had loosened-- Bumblepaw might fall into the water, and drown! She shrieked, "Bumblepaw!" as she lunged forwards, pushing her friend onto the land. Specklepaw felt an icy, numbing sensation run through her as she noticed she was in the water. She grasped the loose stone, hoping it wouldn't completely dislodge. She kicked her feet frantically, trying to haul herself up. "Grab my paw!" Yowled Bumblepaw, holding out one of her paws. Specklepaw reached. She was getting close. Thoughts of water swallowing her, and her drowning, or never being able to become a warrior, filled her frantic head. She could imagine Bubblepaw rushing to camp to tell everyone she had died. She could imagine her mother screeching in distress, 'My kit, my poor kit!'. Her mind throbbed with painful thoughts. She couldn't reach Bubblepaw. Her grip slipped, "Starclan, help me!" Specklepaw cried out to the sky, but no one seemed to hear. Bubblepaw's cries were flushed out by the sound of roaring water as Specklepaw was yanked away, and thrown under.

The currents flung her around viciously, sharp stones stabbing into her pelt and the rounder ones bruising her. She let the current push her forwards, flailing violently as she tried to break through the surface of the water. She was beginning to feel as though she was about to faint. Darkness began spotting her vision. She clawed at the air helplessly, until with a shiver she bobbed out from underwater. Taking big gasps of breath, she prepared to be flung under again. As if she was stuck in the middle of thousands of cats, rocks slashed her like claws and the river's current kept batting her around like huge paws. Specklepaw managed to grip a small rock and haul herself onto and over it, where there was a large outcropping of rock, blocking the current and making it calm behind the outcropping. She splashed into the calm area, and clawed her numb body out of the water and onto shore. She coughed up freezing water, suddenly aware of how cold the river water really was. She felt like some sort of ice-cat! Specklepaw sniffed the air, catching up the death-like stench of Windclan. "I'm on Windclan territory!" She muttered, terrified, her pelt fluffing up in alarm. Suddenly a blurred orange and black shape knocked into her.

Specklepaw hurled forwards. The Windclan cat had hit her right in the stomach. She hissed angrily, screeching. He pinned the apprentice down, snarling. Specklepaw yowled. She was suddenly aware that everything ached... Blood seeping from scratches and then being washed up by the lapping water, like a greedy dark tongue... She looked up at the attacker, recognizing the Windclan leader. Her mind whirled, he smelled of death and blood. She could almost hear screeches in the background, although she knew they weren't real. His orange pelt was fluffed up, one eye outlined with white and one with black. He had a black tail, back, and paws. She recognized this cat more then she wished. She recognized this moment. She had lived this moment, every night. Every time she came close to the Windclan border. Specklepaw imagined herself plunging into darkness, never to be seen again, murdered by the blood-thirsty leader of Windclan. This was her dream. She was being slowly shoved deeper into the cold tendrils of darkened river water. She panted, head throbbing. Her thoughts whirled. Only one thing was clear for her, in the moment:
She was going to drown.

Specklepaw batted at him with unseathed back claws, scraping his belly. She wanted to become a warrior-- Not drown uselessly! The cat attacking her, Monarchstar, screeched in fury. He backed off, seathing his claws. Specklepaw felt satisfied and relieved, bristling in an attempt to be threatening as she leaped up. She sprang, acting as though she was about to land on Monarchstar's back in a classic battle move. He stood on his hind legs, trying to evade the attack that he expected, and rake her sensitive stomach. Luckily, his claws only caught slightly in her belly fur. Specklepaw landed quietly behind him, twisting around as he angrily began to turn and face her. Once on four paws, she swiped his back paws out from under him. She pounced onto his back, holding him down for a few moments before turning and racing away. She took long strides as if she was a windclan cat, running as fast as she could. She sniffed a bit of Thunderclan scent--- She was close to the border! The terrible stench of Windclan began to fade and the musty, welcoming scent of the forest began to fill her nostrils.

Monarchstar raced after the apprentice. "Intruder!" He yowled, and Specklepaw heard his paws battering the ground and his breath hot on her tail. Specklepaw knew she wouldn't make it, running. She braced herself for a huge leap when the aggressive leader pounced, pinning her only 2 tail-lengths away from Thunderclan/Windclan border. She wailed like a kit, clawing at him. "Thunderclan should treat their apprentices some respect for borders!" He snarled. Specklepaw opened her mouth to object, but could only yowl as he grasped her by the scruff, nipping through a bit of skin and causing blood to pour from her neck. She breathed heavily, as he swung her around like prey. Monarchstar heaved her across the border, and she hit a tree roughly, her head mangled and throbbing. She curled up against the tree, hissing. Blood puddled around her.
"That'll teach Thunderclan's kits to mess with Windclan!"
"I'm no kit! I nearly shredded you!"

Her objection was late, the leader had already bounded away. She could barely get up, still slightly numb from being in the freezing water. As soon as she stood up, she fell against the tree again. Specklepaw realized grimly that she might die of bloodloss if no cat found her. She gently put her head in between her paws and closed her eyes. She didn't feel pulled towards the stars at all. Maybe she wouldn't join Starclan's ranks that night. She let out a feeble sigh, drifting into sleep, waiting for an evening hunting patrol to find her. After all, if they didn't, Specklepaw knew, she would never live her dream. Never hunt for her clan again, never become a true warrior, nothing. She'd never serve her clan. She'd die a pathetic death, not fighting for her clan, just clumsily falling into the river and washing up on Windclan only to get torn apart. She'd never see her leader again... Her mother, her mentor, never have kits... Nothing. She saw nothing in her future, it was up to the clan to save her.
