The young elf sat huddled behind a few trashcans. Shivering slightly, it was a mix of fear and cold. The gray autumn sky was drizzling slightly. He swore softly, muttirng all the words his mother would wash his mouth with soap for even knowing. He could hear the footsteps coming closer.
“Hey pixie! We know you’re there.” Donat couldn’t help the involuntary shudder. Of course they knew he was here. There was nowhere else to hide. He had hoped they had found someone else to bully for the day. Sometimes they did. He knew he shouldn’t, but he couldn’t help but enjoy those few days when they found someone else.
“How thoughtful of you to come here all of your own, the teachers won’t see us here.” Donat looked up and locked eyes with Len, but he quickly looked away. Len was the leader of the gang. And Donat didn’t want to give him any reason at all to think he was defying him. He had learned long ago that when they already had found you the best thing would be to just play along. Give them fewer reasons to beat you. Len reached out for Donat’s long hair, pulling him up. “You think you can run away?”
“No sir.” Donat tried to make his voice as meek as possible. And Len just smirked, turning to the other boys. The hand in Donat’s hair pushed him to the ground in the middle of the circle of boys.
“Pixie here is such a girl. Maybe we should remind him what happens to faggots?” Donat shuddered; this was what he had feared. When Len was in a mood like this…
“’scuse me. I'm new. Could you tell me how to get from sexual predation alley to the bus stop?” The voice was new, and caused the bullies to stop for a moment and turn. Donat could see the new-comer. An elf, girl. Tall, very much so. Len growled at her, flipping her off. And then fell backwards as the girls palm connected with his nose. Donat stared at the fallen body. So did Len’s buddies, then they scattered quickly. The girl walked closer, squatting down next to Donat and held out a hand.
“Hello, little one. You ok?” Donat took the hand and let her pull him up, he nodded once. “Good. My name is Esther. You?”
“Donat.” Now that he could see her properly he could see that she was almost full grown, as tall as his mother already. “..Um, how old are you?”
“14... I know I look older.” She smiled and Donat smiled weakly back. She was only a year older than him, but he was far from grown yet. “Ok, dolly, you hungry? Because I am, and there is this really good Japanese place...” Donat frowned slightly at being called dolly, especially by someone who dressed like they had bathed in glitter. But he nodded. She had just saved him after all. “Great.” She grabbed his hand and dragged him towards the city.
