Description
Chapter 5Loki stood around a lounging room, with Sif and the Warriors Three. Adalwin had been put to bed a while ago, having worn herself out from their wondrous reunion. He stood thinking about the recent battle.
How he had tried to turn Thor back until that stupid sentry had to insult him. Loki had known there was no point in trying to get out without a fight then.
He thought of the tight battle, how there were several close calls. At one point he was cornered on a cliff and nearly died. How Fandral had been impaled on that ice. What if that had happened to him? What if he hadn’t returned? What would Alfhild have done? She would have been devastated.
He recalled fondly how he had snuck into her room, how Asgardian she looked with the setting sun on her while she perched by the window with her beloved guitar across her lap. He had felt her emotion as she sang that sad song. She missed him so much.
Loki smiled as he thought of how she had turned around, the surprise on her face, and then the absolute glee of his return. The happiness written on her face would forever be imprinted in his mind. Someone so happy to see him return, that unconditional love she had for him.
Then he thought of when that Jotun grabbed him. He looked at him arm. What if he was some sort of monster? Alfhild would never look at him again! She would be terrified of him!
“What am I?” He thought. He began to devise a plan to sneak to find the Casket. It was a Jotun artifact; it would cause the same effect if he were to touch it, if there was any effect.
Volstagg was lounging in a chair, his burned arm propped up on the armrest. Hogun applied a salve to it and Volstagg hissed as it took effect.
“We should never have let him go,” he moaned.
“At least he’s only banished and not dead. Which is what we’d all be if that guard hadn’t told Odin where we’d gone,” Fandral argued.
“How did the guard even know?” Volstagg asked.
Loki looked up, “I told him.”
“What?” Fandral said.
“I told him to go to Odin as soon as we left. He should be flogged for taking so long, we should never have reached Jotunheim.”
“You told the guard!” Volstagg said in disbelief.
“I saved our lives,” Loki argued, “and Thor’s. I had no idea Father would banish him for what he did.”
“Loki,” Sif reasoned, “You must go to the All-Father and convince him to change his mind.”
“And if I do, then what? I love Thor more dearly than any of you but you know what he is. He’s arrogant, he’s reckless, he’s dangerous! You saw how he was today. Is this what Asgard needs from its king?” he shot back.
He thought of Adalwin and what would have happened if he hadn’t returned. It was bad enough that now there was war on the brink. He could only protect her from so much.
Loki turned and stormed out of the room. He had more pressing matters to deal with than dealing with the onslaught from Thor’s friends about his actions. He had precious things to protect.
Sif watched him leave. “He may speak for the good of Asgard, but he’s always been jealous of Thor.”
“We should be grateful to him, he saved our lives!” Volstagg said.
“Laufey said, there were traitors in the house of Odin. A master of magic could bring three Jotuns into Asgard,” Hogun said.
“Loki's always been one for mischief but you're talking about something else entirely,” Fandral said.
Adalwin was turning in her sleep. She was having a whirl of just dark things. Nothing standing out, just a massive blur of things whizzing past. She bolted awake exhausted and with the worst feeling. She tried to shake it off with the dream, but it clung to her like a leech.
“Papa,” she whispered. Where was he? She looked around. He was probably with his adult friends. Normally once he tucked her in he would go and enjoy a drink or two with his friends.
“Something bad is going to happen,” she thought. But she shook that thought off. It was just because there was now a threat of war with Jotunheim. Everyone was nervous and edgy.
She turned to see a firefly sitting on the balcony. A lone firefly. She watched it’s light blink on and off for a bit before it suddenly flew away.
