Description Chapter 7

Adalwin woke up in the early hours of the next morning seeing she was back in her room. It was still dark out. The memory of last night was still fresh in her mind. Something about this morning seemed bad. She had this feeling.

Then a vision hit her like a ton of bricks. She saw Loki, deep in a forgotten chamber of the castle. She felt pain searing up her arm, she felt fear, pain, agony all these things.

Then she realized this is what Loki was feeling. Their father-daughter bond had grown so strong; they had developed a mental connection between the two of them.

She knew she had to find Loki quickly. She ran out into the dim hallway desperate to find him. She ran down. That’s all she could think of, down. He is down and I need to get there.

She ran and soon felt as if there was an invisible rope pulling her to where he was.

She found the room and pounded on the door. “Papa!” she screamed. “Papa! Let me in!”

“Alfhild?” she heard from the other side.

“Yes! Papa! Let me in!” she begged.

“I can’t Alfhild. Stay on the other side, please,” Loki begged her. Something was horribly wrong.

“No!” she felt panic rise in her. “I will not lose my father!” she thought.

She took a step back from the door and felt an unmatched energy grow in her. She put her hands together, then out towards the door and the door flew off its hinges. She saw her father, his hands mid-cast. She ran in the room and stood in front of him.

“Move Alfhild,” he said his voice monotone.

“No,” she said defiantly.

“Alfhild, I said move,” he said grabbing her and throwing her out of the way. She bounced back faster than Loki ever thought possible for a mortal to move.

“No.” she said again looking strait into her father’s eye. “You are all I have you know. You die and there is nothing left for me anywhere. That’s it, the end of the book.”

“A monster like me,”

“YOU AREN’T A MONSTER!” Adalwin said screaming. Loki’s eyes widened, Adalwin had never yelled at him. “HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO GET THIS THROUGH YOUR THICK FROST GIANT SCULL?!” She screamed. “YOU ARE NOT A MONSTER AND NEVER WERE! YOU ARE ALL I HAVE AND ALL I EVER WILL HAVE! YOU DON’T SEEM TO GET THAT IF YOU DIE I WILL BE ALL ALONE AND IF THAT’S WHAT YOU TRULY WANT THEN…THEN…I MIGHT AS WELL JUMP OFF THE BIFROST!”

Loki stood there shocked. Adalwin stood panting in anger. His mouth opened to say something, but nothing came out. For the first time in Loki’s life, he was speechless.

Tears began to stream down her eyes, “You must not care about me if you think that you leaving is best for me!” She screamed. “You are the master of lies since every time you said you loved me was clearly a lie! You never loved me! You clearly don’t think that if you leave everything will get better because I’ll be all alone! You lied when you made your promise! You’re…you’re…you’re just like THEM!”

Then Adalwin, still in utter rage, slapped Loki as hard as she could across his face. Loki stood kneeling with his head to the side frozen. His mind didn’t seem to comprehend what was happening. “My daughter slapped me…and my face hurts…and I’m an idiot.” He thought.

He turned to look at Adalwin who was still angry. Inside her eyes he saw a flame he had never seen before. A flame to keep him alive, to keep him with her, to keep them together, no, to keep her family together. She wasn’t going to give him up so easily and Loki looked at the incomplete spell in his hands.

He quickly dropped it in shock. “What was I thinking? I nearly blew my cover. I should be giving my daughter the love and attention she deserves. Gods! What is wrong with me? I leave her alone worrying for a day, then I try to drive her away because I’m a monster then I nearly abandon her? What the actual fuck is wrong with me?” he thought.

He then scooped down and gave Adalwin the biggest hug filled with every last ounce of love he could fit into it.

“I’m so sorry, Alfhild. For everything I have done. I promised you I would never leave you and I meant it. Thank you for helping me see the light. I have been a real arse.”

“Yes you have,” Adalwin said crossing her arms and giving a ‘humph’ looking away from him.

“Please, my little princess, how can I make it up to you?” he asked nearly begging.

“You play with me all day today,” she said.

“Deal,” he said relieved it was small.

“That’s not all,” she said cutting him off. Loki swallowed hard.

“What else my precious jewel?” he asked his voice shaking slightly.
“We play all day, and you teach me what ever spell I want. And I get to go riding with you tomorrow.”

“Ok,” Loki said.

“And, I get to play dress up with you.”

“Ah,” Loki said not liking where this was going.

“I get to do your hair, and nails, and put on make-up and everything.” She said still not looking at him. “And I get to eat whatever sweet I want tonight and however much.”

“Isn’t that pushing things a little bit…” Loki tried.

Adalwin looked him dead in the eye.

“But nothing’s to much for my little girl!” he said quickly. “If I do these things, will that make up for what I have done?”

“Yes,” she said. “And one more thing.”

Loki swallowed hard again. “Yes my beautiful flower?”

“I get to go to bed however late I want from now on.”

“But,” Loki started.

“However. Late. I. Want.” She emphasized each word.

“Deal,” he agreed with a sigh. It could have been much worse.

“Good,” she said quickly climbing onto his back. “Now we start. Giddy up horsy!” she said.

Loki couldn’t help but grin. “That’s my girl,” he thought as he ran to his room with his daughter clinging to his back.

Loki was in the middle of teaching Adalwin how to turn wine into snakes when there came a knock at the door.

“Who is it?” Loki called.

“It’s a message for Prince Loki,” a guard said. “The Queen wishes to speak to you. It is urgent.”

Loki looked to a scared Adalwin. “I’ll be right back,” he said getting up. “Keep practicing that spell.”

“You are still going to play with me right?” she said sounding suspicious.

“Of course my little Alfhild,” he said as he left.

Adalwin turned back to the goblet of wine in front of her. “Ok, now, snakes!” she said trying to get it to work. “Snakes,” she said again. “Snakes.”

After a little while, Loki came back to the room. He had been away far longer than he had expected. He hoped Adalwin would understand.

He walked in and found an empty chalice sitting on the table and Adalwin singing to herself sitting on the windowsill.

“I’m so sorry that took so long,” Loki said coming in.

Adalwin shrugged.

“We can continue the lesson if you want,” he said looking into the glass.

“No, I got bored with it.” She said in monotone.

Loki winced, “Well, it seems you were able to do it.”

“The snakes wouldn’t stay so I quite.” She said annoyed.

“Then what happened to the wine?” Loki asked.

“I tried it.” She said.

Loki froze and recomposed himself. “Alfhild, that is not something a little girl should try! That could kill you!”

“Then why doesn’t it?” she spat back.

Loki was taken aback. “What did you say?”

“I said why doesn’t it kill me since I drank it?” she repeated.

“Alfhild! How could you say that?” he said coming to comfort his daughter.

“It’s clear you don’t want me. You’ve missed our whole day of play that you promised. I didn’t even get to play dress up.”

Loki looked outside and realized the few hours he thought he was gone, was really half a day. It was dark outside.

“Alfhild, I had no idea it went so long. I swear I was trying to get out of it as fast as I could. I had to arrange some things.”

“What things?” Adalwin asked still hurt.

“Honey, come here. I have something to tell you,” Loki said. Adalwin hopped off her perch and walked to stand in front of her father.

Loki knelt down to her eye level, “My Alfhild, Odin has fallen into the Odinsleep,”

Adalwin gasped and felt tears begin. First Thor being banished, then war, now Odin was in the Odinsleep, everything was turning to chaos.

“And Mother fears he won’t wake up. So, since Thor is banished, and I am next in line…”

Loki let this sink in. Adalwin pondered this, then it hit her, “Papa, are you…”

“I’m king now Alfhild! Isn’t that exciting?” Loki said enthusiastically.

“Wow! Papa! That’s great!” Adalwin said. In all honesty, she was happy he was king. She always thought he would be a good king, but she feared now she wouldn’t see him ever.

“Now, I have lots of damage to fix and very little time, so I will be busy with war preparations and treaties, and along with other duties. In between this, I will be spending as much time with you as I can as I can clearly see that these past events and you need some real quality time with me right now.”

She hugged her father around his middle. “I’m so glad Papa!” she said muffled by his clothing.

“As am I,” Loki said hugging her back. “Now, I believe we were in the middle of a lesson.”

Loki finished his lesson to Adalwin, and she soon mastered the art. “Now,” he said breaking her attention, “I don’t want to see this little trick during a formal dinner, or while important guests are here,” he said laughing.

Adalwin giggled, “Aww, what about to Aunt Sif?” she asked.

“If you want to get stabbed, then fine.”

Adalwin smiled and then yawned. “I’m tired, Papa, I think I’ll go to bed.” She said.

Loki looked outside to see it was later than he thought. “I think that is a good idea.” He cleaned up the lesson and soon Adalwin was ready for bed.

She climbed into bed and Loki lay beside her. They lay staring at her ceiling, simply enjoying being with each other.

Loki looked down at his daughter as she curled up next to his side. He began to sing her lullaby that he created for her. She had always been a musical child and she loved it when he sang her to sleep when she was younger.

His voice was deep and charismatic and always soothed her when she was upset. “Constant as the stars above,” he sang. “Always know that you are loved. And my love shining in you, will help you make the future new and help us stay me and you.”

Adalwin nodded off to her father’s calming voice. “Good night darling,” he whispered as he kissed her head.
