Description Chapter 8

Loki sat on the Throne of Asgard just enjoying the moment. He was king, Odin was in the Odinsleep and Thor was banished. For this brief moment, everything was perfect and how it should be. He ensured Thor wouldn’t come back again, and he was rather tired after sneaking into that compound, and disguising himself as an agent to tell Thor that father was dead and he couldn’t bring him back.

Adalwin had always wanted to come to Earth and he felt bad for not taking her with him, but he didn’t have a choice. His plans would have been ruined.

His thoughts were interrupted with the Warriors Three coming into the room.

“Allfather, we must speak with you urgently...” Sif said as she entered the room, her hand in a fist across her heart. Her voice died away when she saw Loki sitting on the throne.

“My friends,” Loki greeted them. The astonishment on their faces was beautiful.

“Where is Odin?” Fandral asked.

“Father has fallen into the Odinsleep. Mother fears he may never awaken again,” Loki said with mock sympathy. All he had to do was play the part now.

“We would speak with her…” Sif started.

“She has refused to leave my father's bedside. You can bring your urgent matter to me, your King,” Loki said.

Loki watched with pleasure as they all kneeled to him, the king. He noticed a flash of green by one of the pillars and narrowed his eyes before turning his attention to the Warriors Three.

“My King, we would ask that you end Thor's banishment,” Sif said getting to the point.

“My first command cannot be to undo the Allfather's last. We're on the brink of war with Jotunheim. Our people need a sense of continuity, in order to feel safe in these difficult times. All of us must stand together, for the good of Asgard,” Loki argued rationally as he rose off the throne to stand in front of the Warriors.

“Yes... of course,” Fandral said.

“Good. Then you will wait for my word,” Loki commanded before he turned back to the throne.

Volstagg chuckled nervously, “If I may, beg the indulgence of your Majesty, to perhaps reconsider...”

“We're done!” Loki said turning and cutting him off.

The Warriors nodded and left. Loki, fuming turned back and sat on the throne. “Come out and play little minx,” he said to the empty room.

Nobody came out.

“Don’t make me get up,” he said still agitated from the whole thing and not in the immediate mood for games.

“Boo!” Adalwin said popping over the side of the arm of the chair.

“Gah!” Loki jumped. Then smiled. “Very good! Your lessons on stealth are paying off! Soon I will have the sneakiest daughter in all the Nine Realms!” Loki said grabbing her and pulling her in for a hug.

The green shirt he had gotten her fit like a glove and looked beautiful on her. As the new princess of Asgard, she should be wearing the proper colors.

“You were almost invisible,” he chided lovingly, “But I caught your shirt out of the corner of my eye.”

Adalwin lovingly snuggled into his lap, “I’ll get it next time,” she said smiling. She had been visiting him more and more often to spend time with him in between her morning and night lessons since Loki was busy all other times.

“Alfhild, I fear I am falling ill,” Loki said suddenly.

Adalwin’s eyes widened, “What?” she asked her voice tight.

“You see, I have this strange sensation in my arms…” Loki began.

Adalwin quickly got it, “No, Papa, No!”

Loki grabbed her with a growl and began to tickle her, “No! Papa! Stop!” she said gasping and wriggling.

“I can’t stop it! Alfhild! Run away I can’t fight it!” Loki declared.

“No! Papa! Fight it! Fight it!” Adalwin gasped.

“I’m trying my darling! It’s too strong! Alfhild! Use your love!” Loki said.

Adalwin was laughing too hard to do much of anything but she managed to hug Loki around the middle.

Loki sighed. “That’s better! The mighty Alfhild saved me, the strongest seven year old in all the nine realms! Now, why don’t you do something for me?”

“For you father, anything,” Adalwin said. She often said this, and to be honest Loki loved the strange saying. It was just one of her ways of showing her loyalty and love.

“I need you to run to the weapon’s room, and get my sharpened knives from the Blacksmith. Can you do that for me?”

“Yes, father,” she said before she bounded out of his lap.

“Oh yeah,” she said stopping mid stride and turning back to him before leaping back into his lap and giving him a hug. Then she leapt back out of his lap and ran to do the errand.

“Such a sweet little thing,” he thought to himself. “So hopeful, so full of life, I would never want to see anything darken those eyes with sadness, ever.”

The days passed and Adalwin grew accustomed to Loki being king, but he seemed even more stressed now that he was on the throne.

One day she noticed him sneaking out and she followed him. She got about halfway to wherever he was going before she lost him.

“Where is he going?” she wondered.

She headed back to her room and picked back up her guitar. She was strumming half mindedly when Loki came back, looking slightly out of breath.

“Papa,” she said smiling.

“Alfhild, we need to talk,” Loki said seriously.

“Ok,” she said nervously as she came and sat by him on her bed.

“Alfhild, the frost giants are getting closer and closer to going to war with us, if something were to happen, I need to make sure you can defend yourself. Your training will intensify, but listen to me when I say this; if you are ever faced with a Frost Giant, run like mad. Just keep running and get as far away as possible. If they attack the castle, hide. Do not try to fight, I will deal with them.” Loki said.

“But what if you start to lose the fight?” Adalwin asked.

“Alfhild,” Loki said with a deep sigh. “Listen to me, even if I start to lose, even if they kill me you do not fight.”

“No!” Adalwin argued.

“Yes,” Loki growled. “If I die, then you have a chance to live. I don’t care if I’m ripped in half, do not try to fight them, and do not try to save me. Run, hide and get away. Find someone to help you.”

“I can’t agree to that Papa,” Adalwin argued. “I can’t lose you. I have to fight beside you.”

“Alfhild, please,” Loki sighed before his voice softened. “I’m much stronger than you, I’m much more powerful, the chances of me surviving the encounter are much better than you. You can’t live without me, but the same applies to myself. I could never live with myself if something happened to you that I couldn’t stop. It would tear me apart.”

“Papa,” Adalwin tried.

“My little Alfhild, please.” Loki begged.

“Ok,” Adalwin said. “I will try to stay hidden. But that’s all I can promise.”

“That’s enough for me,” Loki said hugging her. “Now to the training hollow, we have work to do.”

Adalwin stood panting with blood running from her shoulder down her dominant arm.

“Focus!” Loki barked. “The enemy will not go easy on you just because you are small and a child. Fight Alfhild!”

Adalwin attempted to block Loki’s next attack and the shock went down her already shattered arm. Loki was not strong in the sense of physical strength, but he was still much stronger than anything Adalwin could hold.

She whimpered and fell to the ground.

“Get up,” Loki barked.

Adalwin was close to tears. This training was to hard, she wasn’t ready for this. She was a mortal!

“Papa, I want to stop,” She whimpered.

“The enemy won’t stop until you are dead. Get up!” Loki said as he towered over her. He gave a sharp kick to her ribs, sending her skidding across the ground.

“Papa,” she said through her tears.

“Don’t cry, that is weakness.” Loki commanded. “Now, strike me, again.”

Adalwin charged up and swung with her non-dominant hand the blade hit Loki’s and broke. Adalwin’s eyes widened and she took a hit full to her gut.

“Sloppy,” Loki hissed.

Adalwin fell to the ground. Her arm was stinging and she looked to see the scar that ran from the top of her shoulder down to her wrist had reopened.

She sucked up her tears and felt anger well in her stomach. “I want to stop Papa,” she said. The day was nearly over and she had been at this since late that night.

“We shall not stop until you show me you can save yourself.” He said sharply.

Adalwin, then tired of physical force, felt her magic swell. “Ok,” she thought. She launched an energy ball at Loki who barely got out of the way in time.

He charged toward her left side and Adalwin threw the first burst of energy she could at him. The clone disappeared. Adalwin knew where the real one was and as Loki came up behind her while his clone disappeared, she whirled around and threw Loki back with her magic.

Adalwin’s eyes were nearly black and the energy running through her should have destroyed her, but instead it fueled her fury.

Loki spiraled back surprised by his trick failing and hit a nearby tree before he fell to the ground.

He grunted from the hit and Adalwin, realizing what she had done, quickly ran over to her father.

“Papa! Papa I’m so sorry I didn’t mean to!” she apologized profusely.

“Then you are missing the entire point of this lesson,” he growled. “We will not stop until you can defend yourself and if you apologize to the enemy for hurting him, then we have a long way to go.”

Loki’s remark stung. She felt anger burn again before Loki hit her square in her delicate ribs and she flew backwards with a cry.

Loki stood up and saw Adalwin attempt to get up across the field. She was a stubborn thing, and wouldn’t give up easily, that would prove a challenge.

Loki knocked Adalwin back to the ground easily and put one foot on her back as she tried to get up, putting pressure on her now broken ribs.

“Papa! Please, this hurts really bad!” she said close to tears.

“Weakling,” he hissed. “You shouldn’t cry over a wound, you should get back up. Fight!”

Then Adalwin heard a growl from the woods and looked to see bright red eyes glaring at them. Loki quickly got off Adalwin and pulled her to her feet.

“Run,” he said his voice suddenly serious and full of fear. “Run!”

Adalwin turned to run as a massive wolf flung itself from the woods and flew strait at Loki.

Adalwin felt something snap in her mind and before she could think, she was standing in front of her father and threw up the most powerful frontal shield Loki had ever seen.

The wolf disappeared into thin air and Adalwin looked around tense.

“So that’s how it comes out,” Loki said out loud.

Adalwin turned, “What?”

“You’re magic potential is great Alfhild, we’ve always known that, but how you access it is through protection. Your instincts react with protection.”

Adalwin looked at her father, realizing the wolf had been a test and she took a deep breath to say something, but quickly doubled over from pain.

“Alfhild,” Loki said as he caught her. His arm hit her ribs sending another spiral of pain through her.

“Papa, I want to stop,” she said in tears. “Please, please let me stop.”

Loki looked down at her, and Adalwin began to sob at the disappointed look on his face.

“Please!” she screamed. “Please father, please I want to stop! I’m not strong, I’m a little girl, I’m mortal, I don’t want to do this anymore! Please Papa! Let me stop!”

Loki’s eyes widened at his daughter’s outburst and watched as his daughter shattered in front of him. She was sobbing heavily, which made her ribs hurt and made her cry harder. If she didn’t calm down, her ribs could puncture a lung.

Loki quickly knelt down to her sobbing form, “Ok, ok, we’ll stop,” he said softly. He carefully pulled her close to him to try to calm her down.

“It’s ok, shh, it’s ok. It’s alright,” he whispered soothingly. Adalwin wouldn’t calm down; she was having a full panic attack.

“I don’t want to go, don’t let me go!” she started saying over and over and Loki realized she was flashing back to the night when her parents gave her up.

“Alfhild, Alfhild stop, its me, you’re in Asgard,” he said starting to become desperate.

“I don’t want to go!” she wailed. She was in hysterics.

“Alfhild, Alfhild look at me! Look, Alfhild stop!” Loki felt his heart rate skyrocket. “Alfhild, my Aflhild, calm down. Alfhild!”

She began to fight him and screaming, “I don’t want to go! Don’t leave me!”

“ALFHILD!” Loki shouted. Adalwin looked up at him utterly confused and disoriented. She didn’t recognize him.

“Hush, hush Alfhild, it’s alright. It’s ok.”

“Papa,” she sobbed against his armor.

“Yes, yes it’s me. It’s me Alfhild. It’s alright, it’ll be ok,” Loki said rocking her softly. “Alfhild, you have to calm down, you’re going to hurt yourself. Hush, you’re in Asgard. We were training. Remember?”

Adalwin nodded after a pause still sobbing heavily.

“That’s it. It’s all right, it’ll be ok. I’m here. I’m right here. I’ve got you. Everything will be ok. Hush darling, hush.” Loki said tightening his grip protectively around the shaking girl.

Loki slowly rocked Adalwin back and forth. He softly rubbed her back to get her to calm down as her breathing slowed.

“That’s better, don’t cry. I don’t want you getting hurt worse. It’s all right. I’m here, I’m right here. I’ve got you, and I won’t let anything get you. I won’t let anybody take you away. I promise. Hush my darling.”

Adalwin had quieted to hiccupping, but that frightened Loki even more from the sudden jerking of her lungs.

He began to heal her ribs with a simple spell while still rocking Adalwin. He hadn’t meant to break her ribs; he hadn’t meant to seriously hurt her at all. He just got carried away being so used to sparing with Gods. But it was true, and enemy wouldn’t go easy on her because she was a child or small.

Adalwin flinched and cried out as her ribs suddenly snapped into place.

“No, no, no, don’t do that Honey,” Loki said. Adalwin began to cry again and Loki wracked his brain for an idea.

“Constant as the stars above,” he sang softly,
“Always know that you are loved...”

Adalwin calmed down and Loki sang it again and again until she had stopped crying and her ribs were healed. She leaned against Loki exhausted and weak.

“Hush my darling, you did well.” He said soothingly. “Any Frost Giant that attacks you would get a very surprising fight. You did well. Now, let’s get you home and some food. You’ll feel better after that.” Loki said picking up the nearly out Adalwin and carrying her to the palace.

Yeah. Loki just wanted to be sure she could be safe. He's a bit paranoid about losing her. But he may have gone a teensy bit far.
