What makes Sai special? I've seen colour gradients like these made in photoshop O.o
*trying to find out if Sai is worth getting*

It's a lot easier in sai with photoshop you can only layer colours, do this repeatedly with a very low opacity brush and you get a color gradient. With sai you get brushes that add colours and blends them at the same time (like real oil or acrylic paints would) 
However it is more easy to create fancy brush textures in photoshop, and you can save images in cmyk (I believe sai doesn't)

I love sai partly because I've used it for about five years now, and photoshop works quite differently

I can imagine; I hear people say photoshop is too complicated and I guess I don't know better XD
But photoshop can do gradients as well, even has a gradient feature (that looks less great, but still....)
