Description
This is a male gyrfalcon, a.k.a a jerkin. He needs a name. He will be white white white. (and VERY noisy!)In my opinion he looks like a cartoon character here...
UPDATE: He is named Oberon and other photos of him in his juvenile plumage can be found here - there's a nice one of him clawing my boyfriend and another of him mouthing off at me. What a cute little baby.

I am technically but I don't quite feel ready to call myself a falconer. I fly trained hawks at wild quarry but I haven't trained them myself. The hawks I have trained have been for display purposes and have never caught anything bigger than a rat. Right now I'm in no position to keep hawks so I fly other peoples' - but one day I'll be in the right position to be responsible for my own hawk which I will train from scratch. I fancy a small peregrine, but it depends on my land...

lol good name, better than what he ended up with I'm afraid - the boss decided he should be called Oberon after the king of the fairies in A Midsummer Night's Dream. We ended up calling him Aubergine or Obi-Wan.

Well, that's a pretty cool name, too. Midsummer Night's Dream is a great play ^^

lol yeah he was a wee bit playful when I left, unfortunately I no longer work there...university whisked me away into a civilised life which I now regret painfully!
I expect once he's full grown he'll be very nice, in the breeding season...to those who know him...but at the moment he doesn't really know the limits to his strength!

That would be awesome if I could have one

lol...he's not cute, not by any stretch of the imagination! Young gyrs tend to bite and foot like nobody's business, just because they're playful but they don't know their own strength. It's like having a very boisterous, untrained rottweiler on your hands - at times it's not that fun.
He's not a pet. No bird of prey is a pet. They are not affectiopnate or cuddly and they think of nothing but themselves. He is imprinted so that in the breeding season we can collect semen from him to inseminate peregrines, saker falcons and other gyrs and produce offspring. Other than that he has no use, except perhaps for the odd publicity thing because for a gyr, he's tame and he'll sit on anybody's fist.
So yeah...thanks for the comment. He does look quite cute, when he's a baby! And he's a beautiful white. But never would anyone possibly enjoy having a gyr, unless for breeding or hunting (which is downright impossible unless you have hundreds of acres and suitable quarry!). They're designed for killing and eating and getting rid of anything that stops them from doing that.

awwww, he's SO cute in a fuzzy baby sort of way. How do they know it's a boy already? bloodwork?
Will you be able to take photos as he grows up? I'd love to see them. Gyrs are my favorite kind of falcon and the whiter the better!

Lol! Actually I have to admit, in spite of the immense respect and admiration I have for him, he is very cute as well. This photo doesn't even scrape the surface - you should see the way he gets up and thuds over to his food dish, squeaking away, and carries on squeaking like something that's drowning as he gollops his food down. Oh yeah, and while you're loking at him he turns his head about. I gave my imprint peregrine a spoon to play with yesterday. She was like, WOW! She spent about 20 minutes looking at herself and pecking at it, then hissing and backing away, then letting her curiosity overcome her...it's amazing how playful they are.
It's quite obvious he's a jerkin because he's big, his feet are big and his head is the right shape. We have them all DNA tested anyway, but one of the DNA tests came out wrong - it said a peregrine was a female when it is obviously a male. They're not completely accurate. But did you know that unlike mammals birds have nuclei in their red blood cells? Cool huh...
I'll take photos as he grows up. It will be fun! He will probably be the whitest gyr you have seen lol! I 'll try and upload some PROPER white gyrs. I prefer the blacks actually, they are more interesting and have a spikier character. I'm glad you like gyrs - someone has to I suppose! Why don't you come and do an internship here?
Keep the names coming - at the moment this gyr seems to have its name as Oberon or Buria (Storm in Bulgarian). PLEASE don't let it come to this!

Huh... with knowing females are usually larger than males in the birds of prey, I would have assumed the bigger kids would be the girls. lol. I can imagine that a false negative when looking for that Y chromosome could happen. I was even going to ask my vet about it. I've got a cockatiel who is colored like a girl, but acts like a boy, completely with singing and mimicry and no eggs. The spoon thing sounds adorable. Reminds me of the first time my first cockatiel, Jake, saw his reflection in the aluminum lamp on top of the finch cage.
Where is your "there" to intern?
I'm looking at volunteering again with our local rehab group and FINALLY getting my legal license. Apparently they are in dire need of young blood (all their current license holders are 70+ years old now) and just lost their corvid keeper and I LOVE corvids.
Call him Caesar, but pronounce it correctly "Kai-SAR", for he will be emperor of all.

Wow, that rehab thing sounds like a good opportunity. Don't let anything hold you back!
GO to [link] and keep an eye out for vacancies and internships. YOu can always just send your CV and they might offer you something right away. But if they don't, don't be put off.
It's a brilliant place to come and learn, especially if you like gyrs - we have hundreds of them! YOu also meet important people in the bird world.
