Description

Spoiled Rich is one of those random minor characters that just fascinates me. Sure, she's a toxic heinous hell-bitch and everybody's meant to hate her, but I can't help liking her. Her entire purpose in the show is to sort of justify and excuse all of Diamond Tiara's bullying, while at the same time, she's meant to replace Diamond Tiara as one-dimensional antagonist that the audience can root against. She's less of a character so much as she is a walking plot device/scapegoat, and that just feels a little unfair to me, I guess? Or maybe I just have a thing for asshole characters. Or something.

Anyway, headcanon ahead!

Spending the night lost, terrified, and alone in the mine, she happened upon a literal glimmer of hope- the sheen of a teeny diamond, poking out of the rough soil. When her brothers begrudgingly came to retrieve her the next morning, Spoiled excitedly showed them her tiny treasure- and they laughed at her. They pointed out the reality- the diamond shard was too rough and paltry to be of any worth. How stupid Spoiled was, to think she could save their farm with it. The only thing she'd ever be good for was to get married off someday to some unsuspecting sap- didn't she know that?

Holding the little diamond in her hooves, Spoiled secretly vows to make them all sorry someday.

The second she comes of age, she leaves the farm behind. After some time scrabbling for work, she snags a job as a jeweler's apprentice- and it's here that Spoiled finally earns her cutie mark. There's something so wistful and romantic about a wedding- it's like a fairy tale dream, an escape from the cynical reality Spoiled perceives the world to be. And after years of furious social climbing, Spoiled's keen talent for business and cutthroat hypercompetence shape her one of the greatest wedding planners in all of Equestria. She builds her business from the ground up, and oversees everything a pair of pony fiances could possibly need- from ring selection to dress sizing to couple's counseling. Spoiled can pick up issues within a couple as keenly as she can spot flaws in a diamond- she gains some notoriety as a matchmaker, known for her harsh, but often necessary advice to young couples.

Despite her being in the business of love, Spoiled is single for a long time- much longer than is considered proper for a mare. Part of it is due to cynicism- Spoiled's seen her fair share of clients getting ugly divorces- and part of it is due to fear. They met at a wedding in Canterlot, naturally gravitating to each other as the only Ponyville earth ponies among all the super wealthy, elite unicorns. Awkward small talk turned into discussion over drinks. Spoiled was charmed by his genuine enthusiasm for business, and lack of snobbery or cynicism- he didn't make fun of her interest in jewels, but rather listened raptly while Spoiled rambled on (increasingly excitedly) about shiny rocks. With Mr. Rich, Spoiled was able to be vulnerable and nerdy like she'd never been able to be before- so when the stallion set his heart on wooing her, Spoiled was absolutely helpless to his corny charm.

And so Spoiled Milk became Spoiled Rich. With the new name came a change in attitude. Spoiled had been pulling in very good money as a wedding planner, but Filthy Rich was well.....filthy rich. He was the owner of Barnyard Bargains, a multinational retail corporation, with a net worth greater than some existing countries. Spoiled could, if she wanted to, never work another day in her life.

She loves her new husband, and is very shy at first about spending their money. She grew up poor after, all, and knows the value of being frugal. But Filthy encourages her to spoil herself- doesn't she deserve it, after decades spent struggling to get by? So Spoiled bites her lip and splurges on a new umbrella. Then a new coat. A dress for her outdated wardrobe. And a necklace to go with it. And a matching shawl. And a matching carriage. And a matching yacht.

Whoever said money can't buy happiness is a Luna-damned liar. Materialism, shameless materialism, is Spoiled's new drug of choice.

Her family send her a letter from the dairy farm- spouting shoddy apologies and asking for a small loan. Spoiled pays a team of pegasus skywriters to tell those rubes exactly where they can stick their apology.

All Diamond had to do was follow her mothers' careful planning, and she'd never want for anything in her life.

Although DT was allowed to consort with the witless blankflank rubes er, dear little friends, she still needed to comply with her mother's goals for her. Diamond isn't a bully anymore- she wants to be a good pony. So she attends countless high society parties, and keeps competing in beauty pageants. She grows up and attends the university Spoiled picked out. She studies business, and upon graduation, is gifted with a management position within her father's corporation. Spoiled couldn't be more proud, and loves to boast of Diamond's exploits over tea with the Canterlot upper crust. Diamond dutifully bears all of this, biting her tongue at her mother's criticism, tolerating Spoiled's nosiness, sitting through expensive dates with Spoiled's bland, hoof-picked suitors. Years of repressed fury bubble beneath her surface, and one day, with one small critical remark from Spoiled- Diamond finally erupts.

Years later, Diamond Tiara has fallen away from business, though she does partly own a restaurant in Manehatten run by culinary legend, Lady Silver Spoon. After trying on a number of jobs and searching desperately for a purpose, Diamond finally finds success as a life coach in Ponyville. She is happily married to local farmer-mechanic Apple Bloom, and co-parents AB's daughter, Truffles.

Disgusted by her daughter's choices, Spoiled opened up a school of etiquette for fillies smart enough to have the sense to appreciate Spoiled's mentorship. Hmmph! She finds a surprising model student in young Magnolia May, the tomboy daughter of Rarity and Applejack. Young Mags is enraptured with the ways of high society and lavish living, and treats every word of Madam Rich's life like gospel. Diamond accuses Spoiled of taking a personal interest in Magnolia as a means of getting back at her, while Spoiled swears this isn't the case.
