Description

Name: Merivale Enid

Age: 1007 years (middle-aged by her people’s standards)

Gender: Female

Height: 5’10”

Weight: 147lbs.

Race: Unicorn

Race Origin: European (primarily English) folklore

Additional Information about Race: The unicorn is an old and proud race, dating back to the beginning of time. Originally taking the form of horses many thousands of years ago, they evolved with their magic into a more humanlike shape, but retained certain significant physical features. These include pale near-white skin and brilliantly white hair, as well as long limbs and faces, and a single straight, long, spiraled horn which protrudes from the center of their foreheads.

Unicorns have significant and unique magical abilities, and their bodies hold similarly unique magical properties. They are deeply perceptive--enough so to be able to sense the virtue of other beings around them--and have intensive natural healing abilities. Spellcasting is taught from mother to daughter, as males rarely have equal abilities in that field, though to a certain extent healing and understanding of deeply rooted or hidden emotions in others comes naturally to all unicorns. This magic stems from a deep purity of soul and body, born into them and raised to remain--concentrated in their horn. Unicorns are very monogamous beings, and hold that close spiritually and socially, accepting no less from their children, for fear of estrangement--and, in some cases, the loss of their magical abilities entirely.

Beginning in the middle ages, humans and other such mortal beings discovered further uses for the unicorns. Their magical properties were well renown and coveted, leading to great hunts of their kind. It was said (and likely confirmed) that a unicorn’s liver could cure leprosy, wearing items made from unicorn leather would ensure stronger bodies and ward off the plague, and the horn, called alicom when separated from the unicorn’s body, served many medical and magical purposes. These include cures for fever, plague, epilepsy, rabies, and gout, as well as turning poison benign. Unicorn hair also serves a number of purposes in magical potions and charms. In fear of the great hunts that began to take their kind from the world in massive numbers, unicorn societies broke into smaller, family-centered herds. These herds settled in unpopulated woodland areas or in lowlands, or traveled for years as nomads, trying to avoid the attention of the predator races.

[Teachers]Subject of Choice: Young Education; temp Survival

Personality: Merivale is a strict and orderly woman, who is solid in her expectations of children regardless of their age and will command attention if she feels ignored. She is old-fashioned, proper, and holds on tightly to many traditional beliefs, especially those coveted by her people. She may seem emotionally distant at times and even cold, as she is quite straight-forward and rarely sugarcoats things, but at her core she is a motherly figure who cares for the children under her watch very deeply. She wants them to grow to be strong, healthy, and productive members of society, which is why she expects so much. When one knows her well she can be sarcastic and even witty, but she can be slow to become so familiar with others.

Likes: Well-behaved children of all ages, young maidens, cleanliness, being on time, reading, understanding the motives of others, warm afternoon sunlight

Dislikes: Promiscuity, dirt and poor hygiene, rudeness, losing track of a child for any length of time, modern technology (as she doesn’t understand it)

Bio: Merivale was born to a dwindling family of unicorns who passed, when she was still considered fairly young, to the New World with the earliest human English settlers and disappeared into the depths of the expansive wilderness in hopes of finding better peace there, and to rebuild their numbers. Her mother was a powerful spellcaster--one of the last of her kind--and her father was the patriarch of their herd, which consisted of the young-ones, five total, as well as three adult females including Merivale’s mother, and two adult males.

Merivale was raised in the traditional unicorn fashion despite the broken state of her people’s society, learning of magic and faith, purity and what it meant to their people from a very young age. However, several generations of inbreeding within the family herd showed itself in the form of many complications. Merivale and her two sisters (of which she was the middle child) were all of poor health from birth and she was the only one to survive the pressing illnesses and stress of traveling across Europe and eventually westward. The other two children of the herd, Renfred, a male several years older than her and his young sister Annice, a number of years Merivale’s junior, were of slightly better health.

Renfred possessed little or no magical abilities and largely lacked the traditional unicorn intuition, but as the only young male in the herd he would have inherited Merivale’s father’s position upon reaching adulthood. Times were uncertain even then, however, long before humans truly knew just how many other beings were out there, alive and real. The English humans had brought with them stories of the unicorn people, and soon the herd was in danger again, as many sought the healing properties their body parts could offer. The wilderness was vast, and survival skills had been passed down from parents to young children, so for many years they evaded capture… keeping to themselves and their way of life alive. Renfred and Merivale were married when she reached the appropriate age (shortly after they arrived in the New World) but from the stresses of the time they were unable to conceive a child.

Humans were a familiar and avoidable danger, but there were beings in this place that the herd was unaccustomed to; beings which discovered why the human settlers desired the unicorn so fervently soon enough. Some of these were more difficult to avoid than Merivale’s father had expected, and shortly after the wedding the herd strayed into a trap. In the panic of the moment and the days following, the herd was severed; Renfred, his young sister, Merivale, and the eldest female in the family to one side, the others lost and nowhere to be found. Taking his place as patriarch until such time that they might reunite with the rest of their family, Renfred led what remained of the herd, keeping them on the run and as far ahead of their pursuers as he was able. With time, most seemed to lose interest and soon enough it seemed as though they may be safe again at last.

Years passed with no signs of the other half of their herd and no new foals born, and Merivale tried to fill her mother’s shoes and teach the still-young girl, though her abilities were far from equal to her mother’s and Annice suffered for it. Guilty for the difficulties the girl faced because of her inexperience at mothering, Merivale was lenient with her, and made many excuses on her behalf to the elder of their herd when her behavior was called into question. Annice grew wilder than was typical of unicorn females, and more adventurous, and while Merivale did nothing to discourage her at the time she would someday regret it more than she could express.

The herd was near the border of a human village for a few weeks, careful to keep out of sight but close enough to gather materials such as medicines for their elder (as Merivale was not well-versed in the art of healing and the other two lacked most talent for it at all) who had fallen ill. Annice was curious about the people and how they lived--so different as it was from their way of life--and wandered too close to the settlement when Merivale was not watching her. Merivale did not realize the mistake until it was too late, and by the time she tracked the girl down, she was already in the nets of some being that had hidden among the humans. Others followed and Renfred dragged Merivale away in a rush to escape, to save any of them at all. Annice’s screams echoed in Merivale’s mind, long after they were gone; an injury she would never recover from.

Still, time passed… others seemed to forget about them again, though this time it seemed to last. Eventually, the couple had no one left but one another. They wandered for a time longer, until they found a place to settle. Secluded and difficult to reach, but close enough to water and soil, it was a perfect place to put down roots at last. They settled and tried to rebuild their lost herd, but Merivale remained unable to conceive. When she fell ill in the winter some years later, Renfred chose to leave for a time, to seek out what might remain of their family, and bring back whoever he could to the safety of their home. He never returned.

Merivale was left weak and broken hearted but discovered, after some time, another small family of beings: odd little gnome-people who settled into the ground close to her simple cottage. They saved her from her bleak situation, gave her food and company until she recovered, and in return she stayed with them for many years. With them she better learned how to use her minimal healing abilities, but greatly honed other skills, such as her gut-understanding of others, and how to teach children. She vowed never again to go light on one and let them be harmed the way Annice had been, so long ago.

Aged well into adulthood and having cared for the family of gnomes for several of their generations, Merivale chose to venture out into the world once more when she heard rumors of changes in the world, of some ‘New World Division’ nonsense and the plight of many beings that followed--a plight she understood all too well. Her questions and wanderings brought her to a mountain range inside of which sat a funny little school, something that seemed peculiar to her eyes but which intrigued her. There, students of many different races lived and learned together, taught and protected by odd adults… a place where one might accomplish what the leaders of her herd never could. Safety. She met with the headmaster, a deceivingly cheerful gargoyle man… and when she learned of his cause, and of the purity of his intentions, she offered her services in the place. She knew little of magic or art or combat, or how schools were meant to be, but she understood children and she knew how to survive.

Albel was thrilled to have her, and so she chose to set down roots one more time. Perhaps this would be her life’s work. Perhaps this would be what she was born to do.

Any Talents?: Merivale’s magical abilities are average or low for her people’s standards, able to heal simple injuries and draw out poisons, turn muddy water clean, and other such small tasks but lacking in her mother’s talents towards spellcasting. She does, however, have a strong intuition and sense of empathy, which helps her to understand the needs of younger children and the ill. She has been on this earth for long enough to have gathered other skills as well, such as an understanding of how to survive and what to do in a world where one is never safe.

What about Weaknesses?: Merivale has brittle bones and weak joints, particularly in her legs, which make her easy to physically injure, especially from falls and blunt trauma. She has terrible peripheral vision, and therefore is easy to sneak up on and startle by quiet feet. She may compulsively kick when startled--especially from behind. Her fair skin burns easily, and she is easily spotted in the dark, putting her at a disadvantage as she doesn’t see well in low lighting. Having always been weak compared to the way her people had once been, and having reached middle-age, she becomes fatigued easily and sore after strenuous or prolonged activity.

[Students]Preferred Dorm: N.A.

Treasured Items:
-A simple ring, carved from wood and sanded smooth that represented the bond between she and her husband, which she still wears to this day.

General Additional Information:
-Merivale believes that Albel’s cause is a fool’s errand, unobtainable and perhaps a little naïve, but she respects it and his dedication to it, and so she chose to stay and help him where she could.
-Merivale does not easily make friends, but if one does something she can respect, that is as good as in her mind.
-As the young education teacher, Merivale is in charge of the children who are aged to their race’s equivalent of 12 years or younger. Teenaged students become regular students, and are no longer taught by her. (exception being while she fills in the Survival course temporarily)
-As a unicorn, she can sense things about a person like their virtue (or lack thereof) and she can be somewhat judgmental if someone has lived their life in that respect, in a way that is different from how she did and sees as 'right'.

Here's my new teacher character! She's late because coloring a person white is stressful. *is shot*

I feel like there were things I wanted to say about her but they must not have been important because now they're gone. |D Anyway, she can't wait to meet her babies and judge us all on what we do in our spare time~!

Ooh she sounds like an interesting character and i like how she reminds me of one of those old English types But such a sad background.
You know what OA needs? A therapist probably what with everyone having such backgrounds of questionable happiness |D

Eid and her definitely need to meet up by the way it would just be hilarious if it ended up in her class somehow like

Heh, thanks! And yeah, old English, slightly-puritan type was what I was aiming for. And yeeeeah, that might be a good idea. Would there be anyone around who would be willing to talk to a therapist, though? XD They can't do any good if everyone avoids them.

Yeah, I'd like to see them meet up properly! And he should totally visit her class too. I'd love that. She'd wonder what it was doing there--since she's heard students refer to it as 'mister' and such now.

The old english/puritan type came across in the look nicely
Pft knowing all of them probably not

It's a date then! Hells yeah Eid will go to that classroom, it probably has all sorts of neat stuff to collect in it

Hee, thank you so much! >w<
lolol, yeeeah, I know none of mine would want to talk about it, at least--whatever 'it' is for them. XD

That'll be awesome--I can't wait! And yeah, I bet it could find some cool trinkets laying about to keep... Merivale isn't much for collecting things but she's certainly been around enough to have a bit of clutter anyway.

Merivale's had such a tough life... hopefully being at OA will help! I mean, not if some students have their way about it, but still. *shot*

Say what you want, I still adore her color scheme.

Pfffft, yeah no. |D I don't expect she's likely to stop clashing with the kids she met yesterday anytime soon, so this won't be as easy of a job as she was hoping for. She's a big girl though. She'll survive it just fine.

Really, it makes me glad she's not a student. She'd be book-one Hermione: everyone hates the know-it-all. *is shot*

Awweh, you're much too kind--thank you. She wouldn't look decent at all if not for your help with the colors so thank you again for that! <3

Yeah, that was... a rough introduction. Sorry about that. |D

Hey, but if she's the Hermione character, it means she'll be adored later!

Fffft, you're the one who figured them out! XD

Not your fault! I think that may just be kind of how her time here is going to be. |D

lolol--so I just have to wait for an adorably annoying redhead to realize she's a girl? *is shot*

Heh, if not for your suggestions I don't know if I ever would have!

Maybe it'll get easier? The younger kids are going to love her!

Pffft! *pats a band aid on that* That'd work!

I'm afraid she may just get a bit tougher. |D Hopefully she'll be more popular with babies~?

lololol, That'll be... interesting! XD

Ooh, I like her! I really love the backstory too and how Unicorns have weakened from what they used to be. And she gets to teach Piper! Woot!

I have a character with a white complexion too - totally agree they are a pain to draw sometimes.

Thank you! I'm so glad that you do! I felt like I needed to weaken them a lot... they aren't a creature with weaknesses to speak of in the stories I've read but round characters need them, you know? I'm glad it seems feasible to you though--your opinion means a lot! I can't wait for her to get to teach Piper~ I did a little dance of excitement when I saw his age for that very reason. XD

lols, then we know the same pain~
