Description
Following on from thisMy variation of "Obelix fell in the cauldron when he was a baby."
John knows the horseman's word, but can't remember what it is!
He's got it by osmosis. So it doesn't matter, he's got that kind of ability.
Bad luck Gareth, and anyway, he wouldn't tell you even if he could remember it. Your dad runs a guest house, he isn't a farrier.
( I know this isn't how it is usually passed on, but it is my story so I have made this bit up.)
The other kids in the first picture are Adam and Isaac, with Dad Ben and Grandpa Gabriel. Gabriel is sitting on the anvil in the forge, It isn't clear in the drawing what it is.
This ends the story for now, but I will be incorporating elements of it into other things I draw.
Enough of the retrospective, time to go back to drawing current things.
I really ought to draw a horse every so often.

A little charm seems like a very nice "help of last resort" for someone who is already a good horseman. Great story - I love everyone's expressions in the various panels. (And you've reminded me I need to load Manga Studio on my PC!)
I took my mare to a smith once who was a "horse talker" - my friend had a wicked little Welsh mare who had foundered and needed her shoes re-set often, but she was so bad our regular smith would not work on her. We rode our horses up to his place and this wonderful man just spoke quietly to her, one of us held her on a loose lead, and he trimmed her feet and set the shoes hot so they would fit properly. Not a twitch from the pony throughout. I was very impressed. I didn't see any charms in his possession, but he had "something" that worked.

Some people just have that ability, My Husband is a kind of cat whisperer, they just love him.

Same for me, cats are so cool.
And dogs, horses, mice, ... almost anything furry, feathery.

Hee-hee! Cats have their own Opinions about these things. Cats like having servants - when I leave for work in the morning, I tell the cats, "well, I'm off to earn cat food!"

This was a really good little story, and a funny ending! And I love the model horse in his brother's hand
Dusty has his own personalised 'magic word' which makes him stand up and pay attention if he's being bolshy or skittish or nervous, for some bizarre reason he is afraid of the way the word 'twit' sounds so if I look him in the face and say 'stop being a TWIT' he looks all startled and waits for what I'm going to do next. It's a bit mean but I've used it when he's been trying to headbang and bite me, when he was spooked by a tractor, and when he was dancing about cos he was worried about the farrier : it works a bit like giving him a smack to distract him, call him a twit and you're suddenly the scariest thing in the vicinity and have his full attention

I winder if that works on other horses, try it on Bonnie and see if she responds.

She doesn't care, I tried already! Dusty doesn't notice the word if you drop the last T (which happens naturally in my accent) so if I'm just converstionally telling him he's being a twit it's fine, it's only when I deliberately stress the ending too that it becomes a scary word.

My previous cat Berkeley used to respond to words with an "at" phoneme at the end Cat, Rat, Splat, etc, it didn't matter what the beginning sounds were the ending is what did it.

All his big plans were shattered in that moment. That's probably a good thing however, I imagine Gareth could get a bit power crazed if you let him lose with something like The Horseman's word.
