Description

Jungle Action meets Sci-Fi Fun Commission! In the 1940s and 50s, “pin-up” art was at its most popular. The term referred to drawings, paintings, or photographs of beautiful models that were literally pined to walls, lockers, doors, etc. In the 1940s, these works were very inspirational to G.I.s fighting overseas during World War II. In fact, they were so influential to the young men of the armed services that they often painted pictures of pin-up models on the sides of their airplanes to remind them what they were fighting for and to give them a reason to return home. Of course, in terms of photography, the most famous glamor model was Betty Grable (although others might argue Marilyn Monroe, Bettie Page, Rita Hayworth, or Jayne Mansfield). In art circles, illustrators like Alberto Vargas, Gil Elvgren, and George Petty adorned calendars, posters, advertisements, and magazines with beautifully painted young girls. With comic books, as well as many pulp magazines and paperback books, the term “Good Girl Art” was used to describe similar content. One of the top Good Girl artist in comic books was African-American Matt Baker. His work and others were often seen in another trend of the day, the “jungle comics.” Jungle comics originally featured male characters like Tarzan of the Apes and Kaanga, Jungle King. But as popular as these comics were, female counterparts proved to be equally popular with boys as well as girls. The most popular was Sheena, Queen of the Jungle. However, there were many, many imitators, like Rulah, Jungle Goddess, and Taanda, Princess of the Jungle. The striking “good girl” covers of these jungle comics often featured artists like Baker and others who were adept at drawing the female form. As artist Donald “Rusty” Rust once put it, “The beauty of a woman makes good art. Men will always love pretty girls.” So, this commission features three Good Girl jungle heroines in a typical Sci-Fi setting, based on popular EC comic books of the 1950s. Enjoy!
