Description
Whiskey had been busy making sure things were prepped and ready for the upcoming winter months. He was often gone collecting supplies, finding shelter, food, and other things. Maybe he was being too hard on himself, but it was his first winter on his own with his own herd. Plus his first foal being on the way. Sure it may have been just three of them right now, but he was still learning. He had a lot to learn still.Though as for Syria, it was always just her and Cyril. She often felt alone even when she wasn’t. Maybe it was because she hadn’t spoken to another mare in what seemed like a long time. It was starting to depress her, and Whiskey could tell. Even Cyril could, but there wasn’t much either of them could do; so they gave her space.
Which only seemed to depress the mare more. Since the bachelors had attempted to take her away, Syria just hadn’t been the same. Well she was carrying her first foal which was as scary and stressful as it was, but she was also healing from the attack. Sometimes she just wished she had another mare to talk to about it all. Syria only hoped that her foal would be a filly. For several reasons, but she always hoped to have one some day.
It was almost noon on a cool autumn day when Whiskey went to check on Syria who was laying down in the wilting grass. The mare looked up as the stallion approached and nuzzled her returning the gesture. “How are you doing?” he softly asked being gentle and patient with her. Though he knew as the days passed the more depressed she had seemed.
Syria only looked down and sighed, “Just sore…” she said in a small mumble before slightly readjusting her position. “Got any plans for today?” she asked figuring he was going to leave for a few hours again.
The stallion was silent for a moment as he looked over at Cyril, “Perhaps, but what about you go get some fresh air and go for a walk?” he suggested knowing she needed some time to herself.
She only looked up at him immediately, “But- what about Cyril? We can’t just leave him here by himself. He’s still young.” she said sounding concerned and hesitant.
“I’ll stay with him. You need a few hours by yourself..it’d be good for you.” he said before nibbling on her mane. Syria was still hesitant, but she slowly stood up, “Go on. Get outta here. We’ll be fine.” he said reassuring her before Syria nuzzled him and walked away. He was right she did need this. It felt good to get away for a bit and spend some time alone.
Though Syria ended up in a large clearing as she looked around. There wasn’t much, but it was a nice spot to hang out at for a couple hours. As Syria had started walking out into the clearing, she has heard something to the right of her. The mare had almost froze as she hesitantly looked to see what the source of the sound was only to see a small orange colt.
The colt had been off by himself for quite some time. He spent days by himself looking for shelter or even someone for help. It wasn’t until he came into a clearing that he noticed a mare slowly walking out into the open. Without hesitation the small colt started galloping before slowly slowing down to a walk before coming to a halt. Not a word came from him, but he just stood there hoping he wouldn’t have to be alone anymore.
Syria looked around for signs of another horse, but there was none. Instead Syria stepped over to the colt and looked him over. Her heart sank when she noticed scars on his ears, withers, and hindquarters. “What happened to you? Where’s your mother? Do you have a herd..?” she asked him while continuing to look him over.
The colt got nervous when the mare stepped over to him and begun looking him over, “I-I…” he stuttered, “I don’t know…I got separated from my mom one night…” he quickly and quietly mumbled. Syria didn’t know what to do. She clearly couldn’t take care of yet another colt when she herself had one on the way, but she also couldn’t leave this poor colt here by himself.
Only for her motherly instincts to kick in as she spoke, “Come on you’re coming home with me..but it isn’t much of a herd…yet..” she said as she turned around and started walking back home. The colt only gave a small nod as he followed her. “Do you have a name little one?” she asked looking back at the colt.
“Cornelian..” he spoke still seeming nervous. Nothing more was spoken between the two as they traveled. It wasn’t long until Syria saw Whiskey walking over with a confused look on his face. Cyril not too far behind.
“I thought you were going to be gone for a few more hours? Did something happen?” Whiskey asked sounded worried as he quickly made sure nothing happened to Syria. Only them did the bright orange colt poke his head out from behind her. “Syria…?”
The mare only sighed, “He was separated from his mother and his herd. I couldn’t just leave him there by himself. There were no other signs of other horses. I had to bring him here. He’s way too young to be by himself.” she said not wanting him to get angry with her for bringing the colt. Syria only nuzzled him hoping it’d ease his nerves.
Whiskey was silent as he observed the foal before looking at Syria and seeing how she was already caring for him, “Alright…he can stay, but we can’t keep taking in lost foals. Not when it’s just the two of us and our expecting foal.” he said before looking at the colt then Syria, “Does he have a name?” he asked.
Syria smiled happily as she seemed happier than she had been in awhile. Though she didn’t let herself get too excited. “His name is Cornelian.” she said as she looked at the orange colt who too had a smile on his face, “This is your new home Cornelian. The herd may not be much right now, but it’ll grow over time.” she said before returning to gaze to Whiskey with another smile across her face.
