Description The goal of this project was to present our life through the cover for an album. Summing up your entire life into two images or designs is relatively difficult. After some food for thought, I decided the best way to approach this task would be to draw what goes on inside my head, because I felt that was one of the things that was consistent throughout my life. Whenever life would get hard you could hide away in a fantasy world of your own, a world with no limits. After thinking about it in that manner, I started sketching.

The front of the cover is packed with animals that you cannot find in the given environment. The point of it being to present the impossibilities that happen in our heads from time to time. The typography in a way reflects the fantasy artwork and blends into it with color as well as bits of the artwork overlapping it. The title itself “Dream Lantern” flap. “Yume Tourou”) represents rising or moving forward, and being your own light in the dark. It’s also the title of one of my all time favorite songs by Radwimps. The artwork is supposed to put you into the shoes of a lonely day-dreamer, with a warm sunset feeling to it using cool toned purples and blues mixed with oranges and yellows.

The back cover is connected to the real world as well as the title of the album more. It represents how even though we don’t have fantasy, we can still enjoy the real world even a little bit. The color scheme is a bit cooler in comparison, but still mixes blues, purples, oranges and yellows into the artwork. The list of songs show the ups and downs in my life through a more metaphorical meaning. All of the titles were translated into english despite many of the songs being Japanese. Both artworks are done in a rough and painterly manner. I avoided using lineart as much as I could and put most detail into the main subject of the artwork near-avoiding it in the background.

The cover represents someone who’s mostly stuck in their own head – a creative imgination used only for escaping the world around you, meaning to take you to a comfortable place where nothing could hurt you and your emotions and dreams matter more so they feel much bigger. It’s a place where you can finally put everything aside and focus on specific aspects of yourself and give them the utmost importance. The meaning behind it might be a bit detailed, but I feel like that lets the viewer better understand the emotions behind it.
