Hello!
I wanted to make a tutorial about how I use salt in my backgrounds.
I hope you will find this helpful!
Supplies:
ϟ Watercolor (I use Daniel Smith)
ϟ Watercolor Paper (I use Fabriano 140lbs/300gsm Cold Press)
ϟ Salt (I use Sea Salt - but any salt will work!)
Optional Supplies:
ϟ Masking Fluid
ϟ Artist Masking Tape
Preparation
I prepared my drawing on watercolor paper. I outlined my drawing in pencil and taped the paper down. Taping the paper down helps it stay flat after it dries. (If you don't like the pencil look, now is a good time to do your lineart with a waterproof pen). I also used some masking fluid in areas that I want to remain white. You don't have to do this, it's just annoying trying to paint around it.
Step 1:
I used a light wash of color on the bottom layer. This will be the color underneath the salt. I also added color to other areas and wait for it to dry.
Step 2:
I added a second layer with a wash that contains more pigment. When the colors look how I wanted them to, I sprinkled some salt on the paper. You don't need a lot of salt. The watercolor will avoid the areas with the salt, leaving the first layer to be more visible. Wait for this to dry.
Step 3:
I added a third layer of wash with more pigment, then added more salt to this layer. Wait for it to dry.
Step 4:
I repeat adding more washes of watercolor and salt until I have a texture that I like.
Step 5:
(I mostly wanted to focus on the salt, so I'm rushing through this last part)
I finished painting the other ares of the painting, removed the masking fluid, corrected some white areas with gel pen, and outlined my art.
Here is the finished painting!
I hope you guys like this tutorial and will try using salt ^^!
Let me know what kind of salt you tried and if you liked it!

I don't think so, but I have tried it with coffee and got some pretty interesting results

You’re welcome. That’s what I like about art, exploring and experimenting with materials that you have never used before

Maybe a clear spray to preserve it after? I really like the affect.

Great tutorial.. and very nice work. But I wouldn't use salt on any work I want to archive.. I have heard it doesn't take well to the elements of time. Instead try using alcohol or just water to make your textures. (JMO)

Thank you!! Ah I didn't think about the archivalness of the salt. (I'll test it out just for curiosity)
Great idea about the alcohol! I keep forgetting that's a thing. The alcohol is archival? I will give that a try
