What a truly astonishing photo. The choice of black and whit here could not have been better made, as I think it really brings this photo into that upper-echelon class.

I think having the bird against a sheer black background was a superb choice, as it not only focuses your attention on the bird. It also heightens the details of the beautiful creature. Contrast is excellent throughout, with great tonal range, you notice details that I think you would rarely see in color.

High quality shot here, the kind you expect from a true professional. I would honestly love to see a large-format print of this, as so much detail is lost when scaled down for such digital presentation as this.

First of all - thank you.

And now I have to burst your bubble - it was taken by a p&s camera, and I don't believe a large stretch would do it any good :/

Although I'd like to see a print of it too, I'll have to wait another 4 years or so to be able to sell some xD

Thank you for your time and critique, and, wow, the 5 star overall

Too bad it was taken by a P&S. If you ever get a chance to take something similar with a (D)SLR, I hope you'll offer it as a print.

I gotta say that is one unique, original, impressive and unusual shot!
We rarely see such birds photographed the way you photographed this one, and that really amazes me.
On the other hand, the use of black and white which is a beautiful touch and makes your subject stand out, and gives beautiful contrast.
The framing of your subject is really good, well thought of and nicely done.
However, there are two things bothering me; first would be the soft focus on the birds eye; it's not really noticeable unless you stare carefully at the photo. Second, would be the upper layer of the feathers which seems a bit burned (or heavily processed) I'm not sure about that though, maybe I'm wrong.

Finally, I really like the shot; it's a unique bird photo that's for sure!

LyDeea In reply to C-Hass [2010-01-03 21:24:30 +0000 UTC]

Well, about the eye focus, when you're trying to "pull out" the maximum out of the only tool I have - a strange point and shoot camera, you don't really have much of a focus choice
I have to use two different p&s cameras (out of neither is mine) to take different sorts of photographs, unfortunately.
And at this pelican's distance, only the one that has a weirdo focus was available.

But I understand what you've meant, and I'll try to fix both the feathers and I'll see if I can meddle something up with the eye, although it's the photograph that counts, not the post production

Thank you so much for your critique, and thank you for such a high rating on it!

I saw you were using a P&S when I was done with the critique and I guess that explains it.

Not a problem, it's my pleasure

I guess that using the p&s camera will teach me quite a lot of things, especially that I need to be patient

I agree, this is how I started. It's a good experience and makes you ready for the DSLR world

LyDeea In reply to C-Hass [2010-01-03 21:42:30 +0000 UTC]

As much as I already know this p&s camera, I still want to change it to a Canon 1000D (which I might be getting in a month or so! ) because it's a good DSLR camera for beginners

But I won't bug you anymore, thank you again for the critique!

This is a beautiful portrait of a pelican, looking at the others that you linked from the same shoot, I do like this one the best.

Pros: The exposure is great - the lights and darks all seem to fit in perfectly. Great contrast - the black background works for this type of portrait. Very nice composition too.

Cons: The detail is nice, but a slightly sharper image would really give this photo more of a "wow" factor. I feel that there might be too much blur near his eye. The dark part in the lower left is a little distracting - doesn't seem like dark belongs there.

LyDeea In reply to mydigitalmind [2010-01-03 21:27:36 +0000 UTC]

The dark in the lower left might be distracting, yes, but since I have "fallen in love" with the bird's beak end, I cannot crop it out because then the beak would go with it

And the blur around the eye is the issue that the focus of the p&s camera isn't very good and I cannot expect excellent results out of it, a person that also critiqued also commented about the eye sharpness, so I'll try to see what I can do.

Thank you for your time and the awesome overall rating

This is positively exceptional, without any question. It is so very refreshing to see something that resembles fine art nature photography, I tip my hat to you.

This is utterly just dramatic, a perfect black and white I feel and an image that really works wonderfully well, nice tonal range in this and against the black, it really sets it up for some wonderful color theory principles, as far as it being bold and stark, let alone the luminescence how the contrast plays out.

This is the kind of stuff you see in magazines, and this in my opinion is perhaps one of the most wonderful shots, and refreshing, that I have seen in some time!

Perfection!
