Description It was nightfall when the truck drove up to the gate. "Gate" wasn't so much an accurate term as "big, lumbering piece of scrap metal", but it sufficed. Stepping out of the truck, a single man in old Army rags approached the guard, where a taller, stronger man stood at attention.

"Perimeter clear, sir!" the soldier said to the gate guard with a salute. "No sludgies in sight."

"Good!" the man replied. "Double-check the men and women and let them in. If you catch one, call for backup immediately."

The first soldier nodded towards the back of the truck, and a second soldier immediately gestured. In response, twelve humans of varying ages and genders slowly stepped out towards the gate as it opened to let them in. Behind the gate, small huts and tents sat strewn about like a big campsite, with more of the ragtag soldiers wandering about with what looked like fire extinguishers in their hands. This place was their refuge from an invasion unlike any other, and though it wasn't going to hold forever, they were going to defend it and the people inside to the end.

After the last of the people entered and the gate closed, the soldier made his way through the campgrounds towards one of the larger tents and stepped inside. "Commander Osaka," the soldier saluted to his leader, a pretty-looking brunette in a makeshift soldier uniform. "Unit 22 has successfully broken up the slime nest in our vicinity."

Turning to face her addressor, the tired, dirty face of Naru Osaka gave off a grim expression. "How many did we lose?

"Seven, sir! Three assimilated."

"Dammit!" Naru swore. "No matter what happens, we can't let them spread any farther."

"I know, sir, but we're limited in influence here." The soldier bowed his head. "It's hard to fight back when the world around us can't lift a finger to help."

Naru could only bow her head in silent agreement. With a sigh, she looked out the window towards the Tokyo skyline. The tall buildings that once glimmered in the sun were now covered in pulsating red slime, a testament as to how powerless their resistance truly were. It had been three months since the invasion of the Jellax Queen Jamanen, and much of Tokyo had been decimated within the first week. Many of the people were mutated into more Jellax and sent to expand Jamanen's will across the city. As time went on, any hope of the Sailor Soldiers coming in to save the day slowly faded, eventually shattering with the assimilation of the Prime Minister and the sight of Tokyo Tower being completely covered in Jellax slime.

And then it got worse. The U.N. eventually took notice of the situation and began sending more troops to counter the threat. The Jellax swallowed them up whole, thus expediating the plague. Eventually, they decided to cut support completely, knowing that the mass could not be allowed to spread. Tokyo was declared a quarantine zone and had all its access routes sealed up. Naru feared, though, that it was most likely too late a gesture. There was no telling if any Jellax made it out of Tokyo beforehand, or, for that matter, out of Japan altogether, but she silently knew that they would have already done so by now.

Now left to fend for themselves, the desperate survivors took up whatever arms they could and tried to find shelter, not easy when the Jellax were spreading fast. However, Naru was too stubborn a girl to simply lay down and die. Despite having virtually no experience in leadership, Naru nonetheless did her best as she helped whoever she could to safety. As time went on, though, Naru's presence gave a certain morale to the people, and she began to take a more assertive role. Any survivors they could rescue were a welcome sight, and they were always more than willing to fight back against these slimy invaders. The hardest part of the war, though, was knowing that every Jellax they fought was once human, and there was no telling as to which Jellax was which. For all they knew, they could be fighting someone's own relative and not even know it.

With a sad gaze, Naru reached into her pocket and pulled out an old photo. It was a picture of her and Usagi at the amusement park, sitting on a bench and with big goofy grins on their faces. She suddenly felt angry herself, like she always did when she thought about Usagi. Was she still out there? Could they have already destroyed Usagi, not knowing which nest was her own? No, she told herself, Usagi's still out there! Until I know for sure-

"Commander!" the soldier shouted as he burst back into the room. "We've been breached! Three sludgies over on the south gate!"

"What?!" Naru snapped out of her thoughts. "Go into lockdown procedures and begin evacuation. Anyone who can't fight gets evacuated. Women and children get top priority. Everyone who can fight grabs coolant tanks and holds the line."

"Evac is underway, but they've already gotten to the spare tanks." The soldier sweated. "We've only got the tanks from the recent raid, and they're mostly empty."

"Well, use them! Don't waste time talking to me!"

"Yessir!" the soldier saluted as he ran out of the tent. Swearing, Naru reached to her side and pulled out a fire extinguisher. She had learned and shared to the resistance a long time ago that the Jellax couldn't withstand freezing temperatures, which was the one thing that kept both sides even. Fully loaded with enough coolant to freeze up any Jellax, Naru was not intending to go without a fight.

As if on cue, the sight of red slime began to seep into the tent, and it was already beginning to expand into human proportions. "Come and get me, you slimeballs!" Naru growled as the mass began to take on more detailed features. Eventually, it began to form crude eyes and a mouth, which began to open.

"Hello, Naru," it soothingly spoke, in a tone that one could only recognize as that of a mother greeting her daughter.

All the color instantly vanished from Naru's face. "Mo-Mom?!" Naru stuttered as the Jellax finished reforming itself into a perfect copy of Naru's mother, colored red, but with every detail intact. Of course, Naru noticed that the creature's waist and bustline were more exaggerated than she remembered.

"Yes, dear, it's me." Ms. Osaka (or at least what seemed like her) smiled. "We're glad we've finally found you. Now, please come home."

"No!" Naru raised her weapon. "You're not my mother!"

"But, Naru, you know it is me. Who else would want to speak with you like this? Face to face?" Ms. Osaka formed a chair from the gooey puddle at her feet and sat upon it. Before Naru could protest, a pair of red tendrils had torn the fire extinguisher from her hands and tossed it aside. "I just want to talk to my own daughter. Is that too much to ask?"

Naru wanted to scream. She wanted to scream her head off and insult this... this thing that was once her mother. But she knew that the moment she did, the beast would pounce. Trying her hardest to stay calm, Naru stared at the Jellax with saddened eyes and croaked, "Mother... why?"

"Why not? We're only trying to make everybody on the planet happy." Ms. Osaka leaned forward. "What you call a plague is, to us, a liberation. No war or hatred or-"

"Or free will?" Naru cut in. "You can't do this! You can't go and treat humans like slaves. Otherwise, you're no better than your old masters!"

"Our old masters only wanted war and death." Ms. Osaka gestured to herself. "We want unity and peace. And all we want to do," she said as she reached into her tummy and pulled out one of those ever-damnable bow-ties, "is share this gift with you."

"N... no."

"Come now, Naru. You know your silly little resistance is a lost cause. Why not just make it easy on yourself and be one of us?" Ms. Osaka sweetly continued. "All you'll ever know is happiness. You'll grow beyond your pitiful meat body. And, besides, your other friends would just love to have you back." The Jellax chuckled. "You'll never be alone again."

Looking at the bow-tie, Naru's mind was racing with fear. Perhaps she was right, this... thing. After all, why would her mother ever lie to her? And she did have a point. Why was she trying to stop something that was inevitable? Perhaps her life would be better off with... them. She could already envision herself growing ever larger in a mass of pink goo. No sadness or anger, just a single, unending feeling of bliss. Shaking, she took the bow-tie...

"Freeze, slimeball!" The sudden shout made Ms. Osaka twist her head in a full 180, only to get a blast of liquid nitrogen in her face. This distraction forced the Jellax to lean off to the side, allowing Naru to escape.

"Good work, soldier! As for you," Naru punched the being's frozen head, shattering it to pieces on impact. "C'mon, let's go!"

"What about the-"

"Forget her! This base is done!" Naru shouted. "We need to get to the trucks now!" The headstrong teen ran out of the tent and across the campsite, with the soldier following.

"Don't do this, Naru!" Ms. Osaka shouted, even as her head began to reform. "You're making a mistake!" But her shouting was met with no response as Naru hopped into a semi-rig truck and ordered the driver to pull out. In the back cab were dozens of humans, all looking at Naru hoping for consolation.

Fighting back tears, Naru put on her best serious face and turned to the driver. "Status report."

"81% of base personnel evacuated. 14% reported as either dead or captured. Remaining 5% unaccounted for." the driver replied. "We've already opened a channel to Base J-7. They're waiting to rendezvous with us."

"Thank god." Naru sighed. "Tell them we'll be there." The driver only saluted out of respect as Naru looked aimlessly out the window, gazing at the gooey pink buildings. Apparently, Usagi was still out there, and Naru hoped she could find her before it was too late. Reaching into her pocket again, Naru pulled out the photo, as well as the bow-tie from earlier.

She could still do it. She could still join the winning side and be back with her friends and family. In the end, though, Naru settled for crushing the bow-tie in her palm. The hell with it! Naru thought. I'm no one's slave, and I'll fight them 'til the day I drop dead. I'll save Mom, and Usagi, and everyone else. She looked at the photo. Usagi would say the same thing herself if she was here, but she's not. So, it's all up to me.

Thus the war of humans and Jellax continued. Surrender may have been sweet, but vengeance would be bitter, indeed.

THE END?

I feel bad for Naru and her mom. They've been forced onto opposite sides of a tragic conflict and I could feel Naru's grief at the knowledge that her mother is a Jellax, at least she still loves her mom and wants to save her. In turn, Naru's mom must feel torn up inside that her daughter is on the other side and fighting against her Queen. She too may want to what she believes will save her daughter Naru from a terrible fate. War tends to divide families and cause lots of angst and heartbreak I find.......

Mayumi (Naru's mom): /sad looking after her daughter and the rest of the resistance fled/ Why Naru? Why must you reject me and the gift of Queen Jamanen?

Jamanen: /comes up and comforts her/ There there Mayumi, she's just scared is all. Humans tend to fear the unknown and will resist it at first. /smiles/ She'll come around, trust me. Your daughter still loves you which shows that there's still hope for her.......

Mayumi: I hope so your highness....... I want my daughter back.......

So I've noticed. Perhaps to evolve into a peaceful race that still advances in all categories, we HAVE to go through a warlike phase to realize how precious life and peace truly are in order to gain our fighting spirit.........

Um, I hope you don't mind, but since gave you what appears to be a very cynical response to your comment, I thought I might as well give you a more optimistic/idealistic view.

As to your comment: I do think it holds some weight there, as we as a species have accomplished some really great things in recent years and, according to one thing I read (though it was TV Tropes, so... maybe not the most reliable) war has gone down-even if it's only because of the presense of nuclear weapons.

Now, granted, I personally don't think we'll ever get to a point where we'll figure out every problem and resolve everything with conflict-especially if you go by what I sometimes consider "war", where it can also be a state of mind where two people have a problem and won't let it go. At the very least, it can't happen without a perfect being or group of beings leading us-but things still have gotten better in at least some areas and might still continue to get better.

Whew, that was close. Naru almost gave into her Jellaxified mother's offer. It shows how chilling the Jellax's persuasion powers truly are and the worst part is, both they and their Queen actually believe what they say about them bringing unity and peace to the world which makes them dangerous. It's interesting to see Naru Osaka leading the resistance, I never thought she'd have it in her. It would be fitting if she were the one to save Usagi/Sailor Moon just as she was saved by her several times throughout the 5 seasons of Sailor Moon.

Keep in mind that I don't hate the Jellax and can see that they're sincere in their offer, I just prefer to remain human, thank you.

Speaking of the Arctic, I'm SO glad I'm not on the Arctic front, it's chilly up there. Jellax stationed up there trying to convert the remaining humans are under a lot of stress from the cold weather and the fact that it's no longer a sure thing that they can win like in the past when we were all in warmer areas and we could move rapidly through large stretches of territory quickly.

Humanity's never die attitude is probably one of the reasons Queen Jamanen chose us as her assimilation target because such a race would help her succeed in spreading her "gift" throughout the universe since even Humans who're turned into Jellax retain their general personalities and with it, their never die attitudes.

/sighs/ Honestly, why must you make things so difficult? No matter what the governments and media told you, we're NOT a Hive mind nor do we take anyone's souls. We simply turn Humans into Jellax and they each have their original personalities minus the bad bits that were harmful to them plus we can talk to each other telepathically at all times even when we're far away from each other and we never grow old. It's basically a utopia free of the pains of being a solid Human, is that what you oppose?

Neo-Byzantium In reply to TheGodlyOneOfUs [2015-07-01 22:47:25 +0000 UTC]

Jamamen DID force it on us but only because we'd have seen her as a freaky alien and attacked her before she could say anything which wouldn't have made her able to help us out. Therefore, she felt that the only way to help Humanity out was to convert people by force, she didn't WANT to do it by force but she had no choice.

In regards to her agenda, Jamamen's goal is to create a new Jamamen race and spread her gift throughout the world and then the universe so no one will ever be alone and miserable ever again like she was when her race was wiped out due to being forced to fight in savage wars for a faction of Humans.

As for this evolution not being natural, who says evolution has to involve genes and DNA? It can come in a wide variety of forms. You really need to stop being so closed minded buddy......

PS: I was never forcibly converted, I chose of my own free will to be converted when I saw how happy newly converted Jellax actually were.

Yeah, I can see her methods are, in her case, logical in the earlier stages of the slaughter. But now she still forcibly turn people when I'm sure that the two sides can come to an agreement. Public opinion well... What's left of the public would press on stopping this war and setting up a relationship or at least a ceasefire between us. But I've heard that the Jellax are full of trickery...

I see, but even the most pure ideals can cause much damage...

Buddy?! I'm not your "buddy"! I'm just a... Well I'm allot of things and most are not for you too know. But I'm not your buddy. Just call me Sandra

Neo-Byzantium In reply to TheGodlyOneOfUs [2015-07-02 05:48:15 +0000 UTC]

She's only continuing forced conversions because she doesn't want Humans to suffer and languish in holes and at the Polar regions any longer. Besides, at this point, the Humans are completely convinced that our Queen is evil so they'd never agree to a ceasefire as their governments still have them believing that we're evil.

We can be tricky in battle and have all sorts of ways to persuade people to join us but we wouldn't actively betray anyone if that's what you're worried about. I can see though why you're worried that our ideals will cause a lot of damage. It isn't like we meant to cause mass panic and damage Human cities with our conversions but if the Humans resist, damage and mass panic are unavoidable.

I didn't mean that you were literally my buddy though I wish you were Sandra. I never asked for anything like congratulations, I was just trying to explain that despite what you've heard, not all conversions are forced, a number of Humans have seen the wisdom and joy in becoming Jellax. If they can accept and embrace it, why can't you?

TheGodlyOneOfUs In reply to Neo-Byzantium [2015-07-02 15:35:07 +0000 UTC]

They're not suffering... Much. They know it's how they have to survive and they accept that. And not all people believe that. A few have started a small rally to try and start a relationship with you guys. But not many believe them... I don't either...

Why should I trust you though? We're... I'm hesitant to say enemies, but we're opposite of each other.

We'll it's not like Jellax was entirely sneaky. There were other ways that you could have done to... Not have the same scale of panic.

That's a short answer question to be honest. I'm afraid. There are some people in this world who can craft the most perfect and detailed lie. The work on every part, right down to the smallest detail. I don't know how smart your Jellax queen is, but I'm going to assume she's smarter than anything mankind has ever dreamed. How can I trust something so unknown? That's why I'm afraid. Because of the intellect of your queen scares me

I've heard the same stories too about a small group of Humans trying to start a relationship with us. I'm glad that not all Humans are frightened by us.

Why should you trust the government, military and media? /or what's left of it by now/ They've lied to the general public in the past so why go along with their narrow minded viewpoints about us? We know our introduction to the public was dramatic and aggressive seeming but Queen Jamamen felt that time was of the essence and wanted to spread the gift of Jellaxhood to all of Humanity as quickly as possible.

Our Queen is indeed highly intelligent, trust me. She isn't lying though about her intentions and honestly wants to help Humanity become something greater and makes the universe around her better. She knows what it's like to be alone and doesn't want anyone else to have to go through the pain of being solitary.

You'd only have to fear her if you were her enemy but even then, she'd simply seek to make you into a Jellax, nothing more. Even those who nearly destroyed her in the past weren't killed by her, they were just turned into Jellax when she encountered them again.

They're not fairing well. While I don't support them, I don't hate them either.

And the reason I trust the militia is because it's mostly us common people. Unlike the failing governments... And for someone with a large intellect, your Queen didn't seem very bright in the beginning. I understand that personal feelings can cloud judgment, but they shouldn't make things so hard for both sides in something that could be handled so much simpler.

Merciful... I won't mistake her kindness as a weakness though.

I'm glad you don't like the failing governments either but when I meant the military, I meant the top guys like generals with close ties to the government, not everyday soldiers, we've got no problem with them and we understand that they're fighting to protect all that they hold dear which is their friends, loved ones and Humanity itself.

What do you mean our Queen wasn't very bright in the beginning?! She hid herself for a few years after being nearly killed to build up her strength and when the time was right, she ensnared and converted her would-be killers and made them into her top warriors. Only when she'd built up enough followers did she strike and in just a few months, had converted most of Humanity into Jellax. She's achieved a great deal in such a short amount of time for someone you claim isn't very bright.

Yeah, her kindness isn't a weakness and when she fought her would-be killers the 2nd time, she was hard on them before she converted them into Jellax as they kept calling her evil and tried to kill her again plus whenever we touch anyone whose evil, she makes them disappear from existence so you're right not to think that she's a pushover. She can be tough when called upon but prefers to be kind and caring.

Ah, I see. Most of the generals hold political power now... It's a police state here. As for the soldiers, you guys give some of them nightmares. One guy kept mumbling about how "they never stop" and regularly freaks out when he hears "jellax". Poor bastard... I try to help him as best I can but he's really messed up.

No no no, not the very beginning. I meant how she used blitz tactics instead of a more err what's the word... A more civilized tactics. Humans WERE extremely interested in alien life. She could have easily done what she wanted to do without massive conflict.

Well, that's err... Good to know I guess? Say, I never did catch your name

/sad/ We're sorry that we've given some Humans nightmares, it's never been our intent to cause anyone harm. I wish there was some way that they could be helped.

So Human society has degenerated into a police state? I see that the generals are using this conflict for own gain...... /sighs/ How typical of them......

Queen Jamamen truly did want to use more civilized tactics to advance her cause but she didn't think that Humanity would respond well to her as she's alien looking to Humans and would likely have been attacked on sight Besides, her would be killers would have gone around saying that she was evil and out to destroy or subvert Humanity and most people would believe them since they're the Sailor Senshi. Also, waves of aliens have already attacked the Earth /but were stopped by the Sailor Senshi/ so odds are that Jamamen would've been seen as just another alien invader.

The name's Ryan by the way.
