Description
Sootstar and Herringstar meet again.-------------------------------------------------------------------
@/mageanders
It was the day after the last gathering, when apparently all three clans had been blessed with freshkill. Sootstar had been deliberately avoiding the Thicketclan border ever since Thrushstar accused Cliffclan of prey-stealing, choosing instead to walk in the territory or along the Tideclan border. Today, it was the Tideclan border. The evening patrol had already passed by, and Sootstar was on his way back towards camp, padding near the border quietly. He was tired, that was for sure, and decided that he wouldn't stay out so late next time.

After a long day of hunting and securing borders, Herringstar had decided to go fir a walk along the Cliffclan border once more- for one thing, it was the evening and taking walks helps expel excess energy he had so he could get a restful sleep. On the other paw, the Tideclan leader simply wanted to check if the strange scent grew heavier or closer. To his relief, the scent stayed the same as it was the previous few days. However, the pale grey tabby caught the sight of Sootstar walking along their shared border. With a smile, he caught up with him. "Hello again, Sootstar."

The smell of Tideclan hit his nostrils just before Herringstar came into view. Sootstar paused, inhaling more- it appeared that it was just the leader, not a whole patrol. In truth, the dark tom hadn't expected to meet anyone by the border so late. He slowed his paws to a halt, turning to look at Herringstar. "It seems that I only meet you in the nighttime. I'm beginning to question whether or not you exist in daylight." He said it seriously, but the corners of his mouth quirked up. He had a little bit of time to chat- surely he wasn't that tired.

The young leader purred and smiled wide as Sootstar felt comfortable enough to joke around, as the highly perceptive tabby could see his mouth perk up ever so slightly. "Hehe I know it may seem that way but I'm simply taking a walk to make me tired! And for now, Cliffclan border is... safer to do my nightly walks, and I feel like it has something to do with you?" the tabby tom hummed softly, letting out a little yawn before stretching his hind legs. "I know it maybe weird to say, but honestly? I trust you a whole lot, Sootstar. I doubt you'd try to attack, as you would say I'm kinda a pushover, y'know? I'm sure you know that I would never jump to attack you either." Herringstar purred softly, his body language forever friendly. Perhaps he was talking too much already, but somehow, he doubted the Cliffclan leader really minded. "I'm also double checking if the strange scent got worse, but it didn't."

After the gathering, Sootstar had almost forgotten that Herringstar talked so damn much. Settling in for a long-winded conversation, at least from one side, the smaller tom settled into a sitting position in the snow. "What makes you so certain that I wouldn't chase you off, Herringstar?" he meowed, curiosity tinging his gaze. "I believe I know what scent you mean now- the wind carries it over, but not by much."

With a hum as he listened to the shorter tom, Herringstar simply smiled calmly and flicked his tail in thought. "Well, first of all, I just trust you, if you really want to, by now I'm sure you could have taken advantage of me and my friendliness, but you didn't! And you even warned me to be careful of what I say, especially around that Thrushstar- if you had bad intentions, you'd work against me." The taller grey tom mewed, before craning his neck to look off to the direction closest to Mooncave. The scent was definitely stronger down there, however he wasn't sure how far away it really was. "You're a good cat and even if we're quite different, we still have the same views on peace and respect! At least from what I've noticed, of course, I still wanna learn more about you, in a good way? And- yeah... I'm glad we're not the only ones who pick it up, it's concerning, but I can't risk sending my warriors to check it out, not when we're hungry."

With mild surprise, a realization was made. Sootstar was beginning to find Herringstars' babbling to be... sort of endearing. How bizarre. He hadn't expected to feel anything other than boredom, but a seed of fondness had begun to sprout in his chest and, despite his quick efforts to shake it away, was seemingly there to stay. It wouldn't be the worst thing to make allies with a rival clans leader though, would it? "I see. In a roundabout way, I trust you to a degree as well. I know you're too soft-hearted to take action against my clan." he meowed, following Herringstar's gaze skyward. "That's a fair assessment. It would be unwise to risk any lives."

The pale tabby tom felt his tail sway behind him and happiness and excitement bubble up in his chest as the Cliffclan leader said he trusted him! He knows that the broader tom claimed it was because hes too kind hearted, but it still felt so good. "If the ice thaws more and we can fish and gather our strength, I'm sure my warriors would be able to do it, however...." Herringstar mewed, pausing to look out towards the waters edge and beyond to show his point. "It'd be unfair to ask, but if you think it's as concerning as I do, perhaps we can team up to investigate sometime? It's okay in the long run if you disagree."

Yellow eyes widened, honest surprise dancing in their hues. Once he recovered from the shock, Sootstar raised one eyebrow, looking quizzically at Herringstar. "It sounds to me as though you just proposed an alliance, Herringstar. Would your clan be so quick to forgive the big bad Cliffclan for the acts committed by my predecessor?" he meowed softly, a mild amusement creeping into his tone. "I wouldn't mind, but not tonight. I'm already tired, and I was on my way back to sleep anyway."

A smile crept onto the Tideclan leader's muzzle, his eyes sparkling as he looked back at the darker tom. Oh, he noticed the exhaustion on his friend's face as well as his body language, best not to keep him here much longer. "Well, I wouldn't mind it- I have to admit the war left a bitter taste in my mouth but you... you changed that. You're not like Sunstar, you're... better suited in my opinion. I'm sorry if that's weird heh..." the tabby mewed, his whiskers twitching awkwardly. "I'm glad you're willing, Sootstar, go get some rest okay? I'll see you soon, sweet dreams!"

The cat before him really didn't try very hard to hide how he was feeling, did he? Sootstar was getting the impression that even if Herringstar tried his best, he wouldn't do a very good job of it. Not like Sootstar does, certainly. "You should get some rest as well. I... appreciate your sentiments as always, Herringstar." The smaller tom turned, his paws- and heart- feeling lighter after their conversation. As he walked away, he was unaware of Herringstar's gaze piercing his back until he faded from the other cats view.
