It's a wig. I saw a behind-the-scenes clip on YouTube where it showed Kevin getting into make-up, fangs, costume, etc. I didn't appreciate all of Sarah's antics either; I sort of like her less, and yet more, than Christine. Less because of how easy she acts(Christine is her same age, if not slightly younger, and she is way more modest.), more because she willingly embraces the darkness, i.e. her "Erik" wins in the end.
P.S. Herbert von Krolock = the definition of smexy! Tim Reichwein, Mate Karamas, and Vanni Viscusi are my three favorite Herberts.
P.P.S. Ideal Herbert combination = Tim's appearance (one of the tallest Herberts I've seen, and the one who, in my opinion, wears the German version's costume the best; he was also the first Herbert I ever saw), Vanni's voice (A fellow Tanz fan reccommended him to me; his voice truly is something else.), and Mate's personality (Even though I like OTT gay guys, it is nice to see a balance between aristocratic gentlemen and overtly flamboyant homosexual.)

yes,she and christine are about the same age. i must be honest with you the herbert/alfred scene makes me sick,(sorry if that offends you)he looks great in that clip though. I don't mind if guys wear eyeliner,in fact i kinda like it,but i don't like homosexuality.

too bad it was a wig he looked good with the hair! now i shall have to look up all the different versions

It's the opposite with me. I'm comfortable with gay/lesbian love, but "guy-liner" sort of grosses me out a little. Herr Tarte does look good in that wig, doesn't he? I took a listen around YouTube and it turns out that Kevin Tarte was Gaston, and the Beast, in the German Broadway production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Also, he's recorded a few songs in English, as well as done a series of classical songs in German (in addition to 'Tanz').
P.S. In the original cast of Tanz, Steve Barton was Count von Krolock. You might know him better as the OBC/OLC (original Broadway/London cast) Raoul de Chagny in ALW's POTO. Why did he have to pass away before a successful version of 'Tanz' could come to North America?! Rest in peace, oh true king of vampires; there shall never be another Krolock like you, but Thomas Borchert and Kevin Tarte... you chose your successors well.

They're good and they are true. The things about Herr Barton I mean. He was going to be the OBC actor for Count von Krolock in the American version, but he died before it could come to the stage; a few precious pre-Broadway recordings of "Got ist Tott", "Instabille Gier" and others of the Count's songs in English are all that remain of him. Then again, considering the American version, quite literally, sucked garlic (i.e. disgusting!), maybe it's better that he passed on.

It's better you don't. They added in a lot of superflous jokes and altered the storyline completely. Plus, Herbert seemed more like his movie version in the brief clips I've heard of 'Wenn Liebe in Dir Ist' in English, i.e. semi- *has watch Polanski's "The Fearless Vampire Killers/Tanz der Vampire", which the musical is based on; thought it was good, but the musical was a valued improvement on the story, particularly concerning Herbert*
