Description
A detail of the stonework above the entrance to the cathedral San Rufino in Assisi (Umbria, Italy), that was built in 1134 by Giovanni da Gubbio for the Bishop Clarissimus.

To me a very interesting example of Umbrian Romanesque architecture. Most focus more on the rose window surrounded by the symbols of the 4 evangelists (2 of which can be seen in the image), my focus is on the so called "grotesques" that carry the window while standing on mythological creatures.

Below them comes a blind gallery and a row of bas-relief depicting once again a multitude of creatures like dragons and chimeras.
