Description
A typical earth cellar for the Kaiserstuhl. Many farmsteads had one near their vinyards to store their gear and also one near (or under) their house to store wine and foodstuff in general. The loess here is great to burrow in - it is stable, yet easy to excavate. Narrow passes (Hohlwege) are quite common here and provide locations that are well suited for such cellars.
Today many are no longer in use, but in past decades and centuries they were an important part of preserving food and making wine as they provided constant, low(ish) temperature during all seasons, also coupled with relatively constant humidity.
Location: a narrow pass just outside of Vogtsburg (Kaiserstuhl - Germany), between two vinyards

A very interesting subject to photograph, but a very beautiful piece. To be perfectly honest, I am reminded of fantasy worlds when I see this. I feel like, if I opened this door, without knowing what it already was, I would think it would lead to Narnia.

I don't know why but every time I look at it I keep thinking something evil is gonna come out of it. Maybe because all the ice around it and the fact the middle of the door is black. Oh and np.
