Description
A somewhat different view of the UB (Universitätsblibliothek = University library) in Freiburg. The UB was built in 1978 for the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg to replace the old, too small library (which today is used for classe as the "Kollegiengebäude IV").
In the place the UB was built another building, the Rotteck Gymnasium (Rotteck high school), stood and had to be torn down before building could start.
Planning came from the Universitätsbauamt (University architects bureau), the artist Peter Dreher decorated the outside walls on the ground floor with full-body self portraits, Joachim Schmettau provided several statues used around the entrance area.
And soon another change will come - its current look and size will radically change, already the books etc. have been moved to an alternative site in preparation for the works on the buidling.
For the new look take a look on the page featuring the winners and runners-ups of the architects' competition here: [link]
