Description
A nice case of tectonics at work being revealed by newly built highways. Roadside geology can be fun on long drives (provided you are not the driver)The clean, straight cut through the various layers of rocks makes it easy to see the faults and reverse faults starting to form a upheaval structure (Horst).
The exact location is no longer in my notes, all I can say is that I saw it during a field trip with some other geology/mineralogy students in 2001. We were on our way from LA to the Grand Canon. Traffic and time constraints prevented me from taking more photos, especially details, but I'm quite satisfied with this one.
++++
Scan from slide film (Fuji Selvia ISO 200), f16, 1/125s
Minor burn along one of the fault lines for better visibility (as present in the slide, for some reason the scanner thought different

The horst-and-graben structure is formed under extensional stress. (For those who don't know, the grabens are the bits that drop down like u's, and the horsts are the bits that stick up like n's, separated by faults.)
Gotta love roadcuts. Dangerous to be a geologist driver!
