Description
As promised, here's a tutorial on how I made my Judal wig! After learning more about spray/expanding foam, I decided to give it a shot since it would be cost efficient and less messy than shaving down normal Styrofoam balls. This youtube video by Mogrymillian is a great intro to using spray/expanding foam! [link]The awesome part was that it wasn't too heavy! It stayed on my head even before I added wig clips, though I did add some anyway in both the front and back just in case. It only started to feel heavy after I had been wearing it for a few hours.
I'll also go ahead and post photos from using insulation foam and upholstery foam, though I feel the expanding foam is my favorite so far.

How did you attach the string of balls to the nape of the wig? Did you use all of the hair in the rat tail to cover the balls or is some of it threaded through the balls along with the thread?

So this is a Vegas wig and the long clip ponytail, or a long weft from Arda-Wigs?

I'm thinking about doing a judal cosplay and I like your wig a lot more than what I can buy online. So, don't mind me asking... how long was the clip on ponytail that you got?

My God o_o
In the end how much did you spend on wig + wefts for this bad-boy if you don't mind me asking?

I get a cool discount for working at the company, but if I was a normal customer, wig materials would have only been $50.

I see you attaching the wig inside at the top of the foam balls, but where are you attachint the pieces of the wig on the subsquent balls? You have not mentioned that at all and as I need to do something similar for a wig I need to know

I would have bought a million styrofoam balls and shaved them down... waaaaay more expensive than a can or 2 of expanding foam! Great idea!

Malindachan In reply to musasgal [2013-05-24 14:46:24 +0000 UTC]
Not too heavy. It only really started to feel heavy after I was wearing it for several hours. I also added some wig clips in the back to keep the ponytail from stretching the wig back.

Wow, I've never heard of that kind of foam! Do you have to use gloves handling it or is it safe to work with?
π: 0 β©: 1
Malindachan In reply to Hinata-teh-Lefty [2013-05-24 04:40:17 +0000 UTC]
I didn't use gloves, though I'd use them if you try handling them before it's fully cured.

So it probably isn't the most ideal thing for shaping more complex objects then. Then again, I think I'm looking at it more like clay than something like insulation, so it pretty much defeats the purpose anyway.

You can make some pretty complex shapes with it. It's really firm once it's cured, and it's easy to cut. I suppose it depends on how intricate you want to get. This video tutorial shows how to use it for props: [link]

That seems a little tricky not trying to cut the cardboard pattern; I watch =CanineHybrid who does Pokemon fursuits with that large green foam, and it looks like a similar process (albeit less gluing). The expanding foam looks very sturdy and good for props though.
