Description Here is a small update of my raffy...unfortunately I dont think Ill ever finish him. I started painting him, but since he didnt fit in my oven I had to use a heat gun on him. I have never used a heat gun for a whole sculpture before and I didn't heat him long enough. He started cracking and since I already put paint on him I dont think Ill be able to fix the cracks....

I could finish him but itll take a lot of work to fix so I don't know if I will. But heres what he looked like with his rider.

Moving cities with him is NOT FUN, lol.

You should finish him! I really love the sculpt! It's a shame he started cracking.

Thank you! He's made of super sculpy. Hopefully I'll get around to fixing him up.

great sculpt, too bad about it not fitting in the oven, I just baked one and it barely fit in the oven. I forgot to measure the oven size. anyway I heard that you can boil sculpey. or since your just fixing cracks you can put the sculpt on its side so it fits in the oven. anyway I hope you can finish it without too much of a hassle.

Yeah i knew he wasn't going to fit, so I was just planning on using the heat gun. Unfortunately laying him on his side wasn't an option since he had the wings and tail. Now I can't put him back in the oven since he has paint on him and the fumes would probably not be good...possibly even deadly! I can't take that risk. I'm going to try and fix it though!! Thanks so much btw!

oh right, I forgot their was paint on it. what kinda of clay are yo going to patch it with? I've used DAS clay before for cracks and it work out great.

Yeah...I think I'm going to patch it with epoxy...I attempted to patch it with clay a few times but I think the air bubble is deep in the neck because it kept recracking. I've never heard of DAS clay...I'll look it up, thanks for the tip!

Holy crap, that's sick! What did you use to sculpt him with?

Also do you have an airbrush or something? That'd help heaps with painting the cracks.

MallorySmallory In reply to Houkai-Amplifier [2012-07-20 07:37:56 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I used super sculpy and underneath I used the customizable toy from kidrobot [link] and then used some wire structure to support the head and elongate the neck.

I don't have an airbrush unfortunately...I wish I did! Would be so helpful sometimes...

I would definitely say that it's not an easy fix by any stretch of the imagination, but would be well worth the time!

You could use a non-bake clay to fix it (like Apoxie Sculpt...its good for fixing clay and dries really solid) It would be a shame just the leave it unfinished. Specially with all the work you already put into it.

I did use some epoxy to fix one crack (you can see it here actually, its the grey at the base of his neck), but is Apoxie Sculpt different? I just used epoxy from a hardware store. haha. Yeah thats not a bad idea. I'll probably try that!

zonkey In reply to MallorySmallory [2012-07-16 04:14:01 +0000 UTC]

Apoxie is a chemical dry clay. Its what most taxidermists use to create animal faces. There are 2 part you mix together to start the hardening process. It has about a 4 hour cure time and it "dries" really hard. You have to be carefully because if you leave it on the table and it hardens there...it will take a chisel to remove it. It almost molds like chewing gum. I use it for sculptures that are broken or I can't traditionally fire. These two I made the faces and small details out of Apoxie - [link] & [link] Their bodies are made of plaster cast and are not meant to be fired.

Its a good product to look into anyway. Here is a link to the site-> [link]

That sounds a lot like the epoxy I used from the hardware store. You mix the two parts together and have time before it dries. Yeah that stuff is SO hard once it dries! I used it for the head on my ursula sculpture (just to build it up, not to actually sculpt the face) and I made it slightly too big. I had to scrap it off with an exacto little by little for HOURS to get it a little smaller. Man, less is way better then too much with that stuff. Thanks so much for the link! The one from the hardware store dried in 20 to 30 mins. 4 hours would give me much more working time! Thanks soooo much for the info!

just go on with him. who cares if it is cracked. use the heatgun over the paint and you will get bobbles. i am pretty sure that it fits a dragon. make it rough!

I know...it really would...Ill probably have to put 10 hours of work in to fix him...I will have to scrape off the paint, repair the cracks, re cook him, sand him again, and then paint him again...hmm...just not sure if its worth all that. He just sits in my closet right now anyways. haha. Thank you though!
