Description Ah, I just love drawing the guy's hair even though I seem to not do a good job in portraying him, as people regularly think he's a girl. meh. why?? I don't think he looks girlish at all...

Anyway, the outline was laying around for forever, and since I like it so much, I was really reluctant in working on it further, I do like the final outcome though, I suppose
I think one thing that is really well done here is the size of the eyes. the size of the whole thing is similar to the one of Hijikata, which I consider is still the best of the series of drawings about Hakuouki. so yeah. maybe I hit home closer with this, than the others. Not sure though

feedback is always welcome

Awwnn It is sweet sunshine boy.
I actually never really liked Heisuke until the musicals and then I fell in love with him and Ikeda Junya. Souji is still best though

Heheh, yeah, I know what you mean. Ikeda Junya just added this flavour to Heisuke. And He is just soo much fun to draw! Probably the reason I draw him so much Though I'm trying to balance it out to the whole musical staff now... when I have good enough pics for it now

Have you ever seen Junya in Garo: one who shines in darkness?
I found it and decide to watch it for him........it is a pretty bad drama but I watch it because his smile is just to precious >//<
That and he is stiken adorable as his character.....

........ Somewhat cute. I just realized that you do crosshatch shading and it definitely seems to work super well. The way the crosshatching kind of fades from dark to light is pretty interesting. Never thought of that.

I indeed do.. been using crosshatch for a while already and I find it really enjoyable.
it is great for light and shadow play.
thank you for your support

Woah! It's always nice to see some HakuMyu-inspired fanarts! : D This one is my favourite from your series so far! Partly because Heisuke is my favourite and I'm biased, I admit, but also because it simply looks great - the expression, as well as the pose.

Personally, he doesn't look girly to me either, but the thing is, I know the character. For someone who is not familiar with Hakuouki, it might not be obvious. I guess people come to this conclusion because of long hair (sure, there are lots of anime guys with long hair and it doesn't really mean anything, especially in this genre, but some people are still confused now and then, especially if they're not into anime/otome games/etc). As for this piece, I think the only thing that might cause this confusion is the face. Like I said, I love the expression myself, but because of how gentle it is, it may look girl-ish to some.

I really like how you drew the hair and clothes! The sketchy shading adds a lot charm to the picture as well. His left hand, the one near the blade, looks a bit flat, but I imagine it's not the easiest hand position to draw (I often have a hard time with hands myself and I just KNOW I would struggle with it). Also, it seems like the right hand might be bigger than the left one (or rather, fingers of the right hand are longer). These are just some of my observations. Perhaps they'll be helpful in some way. ^^

But still, great job!   I love how you try to capture characters' movement in your pictures, rather than relying on static poses. I hope to draw some HakuMyu-related stuff some day (too much stuff to draw, arghh), as well, since It's a gold mine of drawing ideas. :'D

Finally getting around to reply... first of all sorry for the time it took me, and thank you so so much for your words... and also for not being shy to write a lot I really do appreciate it.

So happy to have found another HakuMyu fan and I'm very happy that you picked a favourite out of my series... I'm continuing it ... slowly... I hope though to expand it to more characters... though I really do enjoy drawing heisuke

I agree with what you wrote about both the issue of unfamiliarity and the long hair. you pretty much brought it to the point also, I totally knwo what you are talking about with the expression... it is also a huge part of what I like about this drawing especially, I'm happy that it apparently came across.

Thank you so much for telling me that you like this style of drawing. I do enjoy it a whole lot. yeah that left hand... it actually was that flat in the reference... however I think I need to learn to falsify pictures to make them more realistic... which is a thought I have trouble with.... My understanding of the hand (and feet) is getting better the more of these I draw, with the understanding and practice it gets easier to even draw them from memory alone... which makes me happy because that's something I did not think I'd achieve at all... about the lenght of fingers and balance of hand size... I don't know... I think I know what you mean, but it might be a perspective issue as well as size... meh.. I should look at the reference again. I suppose... check there... I'll definitely keep it in mind for future drawings though... your words have been taken to heart and won't be wasted

Now this makes me just plain happy... Thank you so much for appreciating my effort of learning to draw in-motion! It's been so much fun and challenging to do really.

I'd love to see hakuMyu related stuff drawn by you some day You certainly have my support on that. I have  a huge collection of references I still want to draw(or have drawn from already) so I know how it is with the ideas... some never make it to paper/or rather out of the pen... what I can say though is that a sketchbook in an easily portable size changed my drawing completely... thing is... I usually do a bunch of outlines when I'm up for the task... and then whenever I am bored(like in classes or on the train... or during family gatherings, or even watching a movie) I start outlining the sketches in pen and start working out the details and such... and if I don't feel up to work on one anymore I can just flip the page to another... but I have all my sketches with me because they're all in the same book... and drawings that I mess up on are allowed too... maybe something for you to consider if you feel like you should draw more... I saw you mainly draw digitally though... it's just a suggestion... it changed my drawing habits and it gave me the possibly to finally draw the things I wanted and actually finish a pic now and then too... (or all the time depending on how much I draw)
and it also gives you routine in drawing aspects like proportions, ability to "copy" or "transform" the reference into a drawing by you.... or movement in my case... it upped my skill immensly and it was a lot of fun....

Anyway, thank you sooo sooo much for taking the time to write all this and I will definitely think of you... next time I draw heisuke... ahh by the way... what makes Heisuke your favourite? (I haven't yet picked a favourite... though I do have my preferences, I find Hakuouki over all has a great variety of characters.. which is already part of why I enjoy it so much

No problem at all! As someone who keeps sending walls of texts as messages/comments/etc on a daily basis, I can understand it's not always possible to reply right away. xD I'm glad my observations were of some use to you!  And seeing such a long reply put a smile to my face too (I'm absolutely serious here).

Nice to meet you, too! Yess, HakuMyu is so fun to watch! The actors are so into their roles and enthusiastic about these productions. Seeing them fooling around both behind the scenes and during performances is such a delight. :') Are there any characters (other than Heisuke, of course) that you want to draw soon? Or is it a spur-of-the-moment-thing and you decide on the concept while drawing?

I think there is no need to worry too much about the whole gender and familiarity/unfamiliarity thing. I think it's somewhat a given that, when drawing anime/manga/otome-related stuff in realistic style, some of the people who see it simply won't know about Hakuouki and will focus on the realistic aspect instead. It's not a bad thing, since those people have some useful piece of advice as well. In the end, there is always some room for improvement, but as long as you are satisfied with the result, I'd say the picture is already perfect. : ) As for me, I think your Heisuke looks great like this, despite those minor details I mentioned.

The flat look of the left hand might be the case of shading, honestly. I have no doubt the general look is the same as your reference picture. There were many times when, for some drawings, I used some kind of reference myself, and the result was accurate, but still seemed off somehow. There is also the fact that your shading is very visible, which is a good thing, but because of that, lack of shading on this one hand stands out a little. That's how I see it, anyway. Long story short... yeah, I'm pretty sure it's just the shading.  It's possible (very likely, actually) that the different finger length is caused by perspective, but it's, once again, the lack of shading that makes it hard to tell.
Even so, don't worry. Hands are rather tricky to draw sometimes, I know that well. Very well. 8))

Ahh, thank you so much for taking a look at my gallery (even if there is nothing Hakuouki-related right now, haha)! I really appreciate it! <3 Actually, I draw with pencil a lot! But I feel my pencil sketches would look too plain and boring without any colours, haha. XD So, most of the time, I color my drawings digitally, or draw digitally from scratch. I'm still trying to figure out my way of doing things. ^^ I have my little sketchbook for drawings too, although I don't draw much outside of my house, since I'm a socially awkward mess that feels really uncomfortable while drawing with people around. ;w; I'm trying to get into the habit of drawing quick doodles now and then, though. Maybe it'll be a step forward.

Why Heisuke is my favourite? Let's see, I probably won't do my explanation justice, since I'd need to write the whole essay describing all of my playthroughs and feelings along the way, but...
(Ah, did you play the game? Or did you watch anime? Because my ramblings are game-related.)
When I started the game, I really appreciated how friendly he was compared to the other guys. Even before entering his route, he was really looking out for Chizuru/heroine. The others did too, in their own way, but Heisuke's way was the most straightforward and endearing, to me. xD Even when he said something mean, it was easy to tell it was out of concern, and he had no problems with apologizing. He wasn't that stubborn when it came to his feelings for Chizuru, either. And, putting that aside, he was just a good friend in every route. I really enjoy his interactions with the other guys (Sano and Shinpachi, obviously, but the others as well). I'd also say, that he is, simply, the type of character I just like? 8D That said, I like the other guys too and I adore the minor characters as well.   Like you said, Hakuouki has a great variety of characters. And thanks to the historical background, there is a lot to explore even outside the game/anime.

I just finally found the possibility to watch kazama hen of hakumyu… and oh, I sooo sooo love it. It's going right on my phone so I can listen to it when working I'm serious, I really did that with all hakumyu music I found up till now.

Hmm, I think the concept of drawing is to further develope the style I've found doing these… I haven't gotten around to draw much lately though… been really busy:/ seeing that I got around to watch stuff again now, i might pick up on these again… I think part of the concept would be to combine pen with colour pencils as well as drawing movement… something that, once I figured out how… enjoy a whole lot… also a part is to draw within a smaller scale(practical for traveling and saves time, plus gives practice)

I really want to do a whole lot of characters. I've got at least a hundered screenshots of the hakumyu series to choose from… one character I really want to do, but haven't gotten around yet is yamazaki. But really, I want to drink in all of them, through my pens I've been wanting to do Hajime, but for some reason that didn't work out yet. And I want to do more of Hijikata too. Souji has proven to be a lot of fun with his facial expressions as well. I could go on… the idiot trio is also always something fun to draw… eh… you see…. Lots i want to do…. And not enough time… need to learn for driving theory.

I think my reference had stage light…and that's the reason the hand looks flat… stage light can be really harsh

you should really start doing hakuouki related! I want to see your take on things! And I think pencil drawings can have a lot of charm… if they have enough contrast and good technique. And you can still accent with colour if you want…

Hehe, I wasn't this comfortable before I was forced to draw out in the streets(exam situation) I had to focus on drawing and in the end effect I learned to not be bothered so much… actuallly last time I drew in the train for hakumyu, i think it was the ozoni daisuke pic, a woman told me I could probably do court drawings(as it's not allowed here to take pics in the court rooom, they have drafters)

I have not played the game actually. I've kind of gathered info about it from all channels available, and if I ever were to game, hakumyu would definitely be on my list. Rightnow however I have sadly toooo many hobbies to keep up with and a wedding to prepare, that all next to working as a gardener… hence, maybe some day… I'm marrying a gamer so it wouldn't be that far off.

That is really true from what I've gathered about Heisuke, I do like him a lot too. Ah yeah, I love the friendship/companionship they portray throughout the whole series, it's really something I appreciate. As I'm often annoyed with love stories, and frienship is something wonderful.

That said, I really need to go to bed… annoying thing… sleeping.

I wish you all well, until next time we write

It's been a while! These past two months have been really hard for me, so I couldn't get around to drawing or even logging on here too often. xD''

Kazama-hen is one of my favourite entries in this series, if not THE favourite (Heisuke-hen is very close). : D It's got a great atmosphere and music. Also, everyone dies and Kazama stays single anyway and I find that beautiful. My only problem would be that Kazama seemed to be awfully expressionless at times which is... not exactly like him, I feel. Especially since he was more uh, lively(?), for the lack of better word, in the previous musicals. How did you feel about it?

Ohh! I'd love to see Yamazaki! Poor boy desn't get enough attention! Which one would you like to draw? I mean, the actor, since he's had a few. Takasaki Shouta (the one in Kazama-hen)? Or one of the previous ones?

Well, I... still don't have any Hakuouki fanarts. xD Man, I wish I could draw, like, 10 new thing at once. I should probably dig out that one sketch I drew ages ago and color it like I was planning. <___< Pencil drawings certainly have a lot of charm! I'm not particularly familiar with traditional techniques, though, so I can't say much about my pencil shading or contrast. I like all those sketchy 5-minute-drawings lots of people do. I'm trying to learn how to draw those myself. No luck so far. XD

Court drawings? Woow, that's a pretty nice compliment! : D

I certainly recommend the game if you have a chance! It's a visual novel, otome game, to be precise, so you'd have to get used to the romance aspect, though. xD' It's handled well, I think, and it's not that heavy. At least, I've seen lots of complaints that there is "not enough romance" - I'm not that into love stories either so I can't say myself... it was well-balanced for me. There is a slightly different story for every guy, just like in the musicals, and, depending on the guy, you're probably going to like heroine's relationship with one of them more than the others (then again, you've got a glimpse through the musicals).

Basically, you get a general idea through the musicals, but in the game there is enough time to expand on some stuff.

A weeding? Ahh, congratulations! And... good luck with the preparations? Or..? (Is it before or after the wedding already? :'D)
