Description Tutorial: coloring Ko-Chan’s outfit.

Note: the outfit’s color scheme was designed by the great and mighty

This tutorial can be sued to help people who are interested in coloring progressions in photoshop, and also in drawing flames on clothes. You can use it for general purposes or you can use it to try to recreate the image precisely. Remember please if you do recreate the image precisely that you give me credit for the original drawing as well as the original character, and credit for the color scheme, cause she deserves it. Technicality out of the way, lets get going.

All of the coloring here is done on a separate layer that is 75% opaque.

Here is a list of the numbers that you can find in photoshop for the colors I used.
Black = #000000
Blue # 1on the left side = #347CFF
Blue #2 on the right side = #69ECFF
Cream = #FFF5D8
White = #FFFFFF
Blue #3 on sword and shoe = #000C69
Sock color = #EDEDFF

For the flames:
Blue = #AED0FF
Yellow = #F6FF00
Red = #FF7774
Orange = #FFCC00

If you want to write in a number, click on the color you are using so the color selection box comes up. The bottom box within that box on the right side, next to the ‘ # ’ symbol is where you write in the above numbers to get the exact colors I used.

doing tone progressions
1. First you need to get the tones on there. Don’t worry about staying in the lines or about getting the changes to be pretty at all. Just get them on there.
2. Blur what you have using Gaussian blur. Go to filter, scroll to blur, and scroll to Gaussian blur. Click. The amount of blur I used was at 36.
3. Smudge everything into place. That means that where you have clothes overlapping with different colors, move the colors over. I used a tool with 0% hardness to do this. This step takes a bit of time, and for accuracy, it helps to have a picture with a high level of resolution and to be zoomed in all the way.
4. Once that is done, on the same layer, add the rest of the colors (except the flames.) Adding white over white is optional, but it does help to soften the dark lines around it.
5. doing the flames First, you just scribble. The smudge tool is what makes the flames look like flames, so you have to use it whether you are precise or not, so I wouldn’t worry too much about detail. The colors I used are listed above. One thing to consider is that you will want the flames to bend with the fabric so drawing them that way to begin with helps a little. Other than that, just scribble.
6. Now, using a smudge tool again, this time with 100% hardness, you begin to shape the flames. I used a 19 pixel smudge tool for this, but I also have the picture at 300 times its actual size on paper for this. When smudging, you want to pull the flames up, and swirl a little to blend the colors. Take a moment to look closely at what I am doing here.
7. Continue the process until the whole sleeve, or what every you are coloring, is done. I made sure to leave some white on top, and I even used a vary large, 0% hardness erase toll and ran down the middle (top) of the sleeve. Remember, stroke up, and pull down, and stroke up and pull down, just like if you were painting with an actual brush. Also remember push the colors into the lines. IT add s depth if you move chunks of flame over completely when a fold leaves a defined line to show that part of the flame when under and came out in a different spot.
8. Do the same with the other sleeve.
9. finishing this step is important. Step back, take a moment, even walk away, and then come back. Did you miss anything? Did you color something the wrong color, do you want to adjust anything. Do this now. IT may not seem like an important step, but trust me, when I get into something, it is easy to forget about details.

manic-goose In reply to alsasson [2008-02-18 23:32:20 +0000 UTC]

Try one of the pictures... open it and then click save as... under the name should be a place where it says what file type it is... like it might say jpeg or btmp. It would also come after the title like if the title is love it might say that the picture is called love.jpeg showing that it is a a jpeg file. There are certain kinds of files that deviantart likes more than others.

yes!!!! do want me to put it under j-peg? n then what?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

manic-goose In reply to alsasson [2008-02-19 01:42:49 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you need to save it as jpeg if you can. Then it will easier to upload it to deviantart. Do you want me to tell you how to upload a picture to dA or can you figure that out?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

alsasson In reply to manic-goose [2008-02-19 05:28:36 +0000 UTC]

u can do that, but i want it to become an icon first.....my mommy says i cant upload pic yet.....wwwaaaaahhhh! she doesnt even feel comfortable of me talking to people, cuz she says they might be pretnders, pretending to be the age they are....n are petafiles, malesters.....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

manic-goose In reply to alsasson [2008-02-20 01:13:25 +0000 UTC]

you're mommy sounds paranoid. Even if they are, what harm could they do if you don't give them important information??? I can prove that I am a teacher though if she needs it. XD

What is the harm in uploading art? so when you say icon, do you mean avatar? the little square picture everyone has? I can tell you how to do that too.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

alsasson In reply to manic-goose [2008-02-20 01:36:35 +0000 UTC]

its not paranoia. its just that she cares about me alot....u know that show...how to catch a preditor on line? that stuff really happens......n sum other girl is missing cuz she gave out important info, n so she's gone...it could hapen, u know?
but nevermind that.

yes, i meant the avatar, sorry! i have a pic i drew on the computer, thats saved on photoshop....how do u make it into an avatar?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

manic-goose In reply to alsasson [2008-02-20 23:48:45 +0000 UTC]

I know... it is just kind of cute and funny to me, that's all. I guess it could happen... but the odds are slim, especially if you are responsible and don't give out info that could actually lead to you... even if you think you can trust someone.

Well in photoshop you go to "image" in the top towards the left, near "file." click on that and scroll down to image size. Click on that and a box comes up where you can change the size of your image. Make it 50 by 50 in the pixels boxes, I think they are on top. Once that is done, save as. You might need to crop the image before changing the size. Next you need to check to see how big the file is in bite. It needs to be 15 kb or smaller for an av on dA. If it is, then you go to you page on dA, and click on "Edit Profile" on the right side and there you will see where you can upload an avatar. I hope that helps. Let me know if you need any more help with it.

thanks!!!!! u explained it sooo well!!!
umm....what does crop the image mean? im sorry!

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

manic-goose In reply to alsasson [2008-02-21 15:45:16 +0000 UTC]

Well chop off edges to make it square shaped... like it if is a tall picture, trimming the top and bottom or maybe just one or the other, to make it a square. Do you need to know how to do that too? Do the same thing you would do to change the image size, but go to canvas size instead. OR click ont eh cropping tool int he tool bar and do it that way.

u are awesome!!!! how do u draw? is it on photoshop? did u scan ur pic?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

manic-goose In reply to alsasson [2008-02-14 04:34:48 +0000 UTC]

I do a lot of different things. This one was hand drawn and then scanned on and colored in photoshop. I got a tablet now so I do a lot of drawing with that... but my favorite technique is to draw with hand, scan it on, and trace for better quality with the tablet.
