Description
Chase and Andromeda training with Somesmera's Michelle and Rahatiel, owned by amour-interdit  ^^ we both reside on Angelus Estate so I figured our staff would train together! That and these two are cute.
Posed in DAZ 3D
It was a hot summer, hotter than Chase could really remember the UK ever being. The temperatures were climbing up to 28 Celsius in the middle of the day and the nights were humid and intolerable. A few of the horses weren't enjoying it, especially the larger ones, but there were others who loved to sunbathe out in the paddocks. Andy was one of the horses not handling I well.
The Nordanner had arrived at Firelight in the middle of winter. It had been snowy and cold and dark and he had been at home in it. They had even turned him out with no blanket because his fur had been so thick and he seemed so resilient to the cold. Even with his distaste of hot weather, he still needed exercising. He was young, only 4 years old, and Chase had only recently trained him to take a rider. Daily training was a necessity.
Andy was Chase's pet project. Everyone had frowned at the import papers, which had boldly read 'Nordanner', and questioned why he was bringing in a breed that Firelight had shown no interest in. He had seen the young horse, however, and felt a strange connection. Working with Andromeda just proved that gut feeling to be right. The horse's high-strung and fearless temperament were hard to work with and yet rewarding. Chase had had to fight tooth and nail originally to get the horse to do anything, but it was all about respect and communication with him.
He carried his tack through the stallion barn towards Andromeda's stable. It was quiet around the yard that day. Most of the other staff were out at a local show trying to get experience for their young horses and show off their old pros. They were a little short staffed but the horses were taking a vacation day. Those who needed to be ridden would be, the rest were out in the fields enjoying a cooler day. That meant the stable block was relatively quiet instead of having its usual buzz of activity.
He was almost at the stable door when Michelle appeared around the corner. Her hair was scooped back into a pony tail and she was wearing a simple tank top to keep cool. “Hey!” she called as she spotted him, waving merrily as she did a few quick strides towards him.
“Well hey,” he said with a smile, meeting her at Andy's stable and dropping the saddle on the door. The Nordanner inside lifted his head from his water trough to look at the pair.
“Are you riding Andy?” she asked, resting her hands on her hips casually. He offered a nod and an awkward smile. They had known each other a few years but it was still awkward somehow. It was probably all the times he had wanted to ask her to dinner and never really had. He guessed a night at Pizza Hut and the cinema with Lee and Aisha didn't count as dinner.
“Yeah, he doesn't get a break,” he said with a quiet laugh.
“Mind if I join you on Ratty? Jenni told me to keep him working and see if we can work on the canter leads.” She reached out to idly fiddle with the reins on Andy's bridle. Chase didn't mind riding with others, in fact it could turn out useful. Andromeda had a habit of napping towards other horses, which did not bode well for warm up rings. He had to get the habit out of him as soon as possible.
“Go for it, plenty of room in the jumping school,” he said as he went to unbolt the door. Michelle smiled brightly and started to walk towards the tack room.
“I'll be there soon!”
Getting Andromeda to accept the bit was easier said than done. He clenched his mouth tight and pursed his lips, head held high in the air. It took persuasion and patience for him to eventually open his mouth. Being the smart, young asshole he was, the horse would then suck air in when it came to tightening his girth. Chase left it loose for the time being, rolling his eyes as he gathered the reins and led the stallion from the stable.
It was a long walk to the arenas and so Chase stopped outside the stables to cinch the girth tighter and hop up onto the horse's back. He didn't know anyone who actually walked on foot with their horses to the arenas other than those who had young horses or horses who couldn't be ridden. It was a good start to a warm up, letting the horse walk briskly along the internal road of Angelus.
The whole estate was eerily quiet. With the horses being in the paddocks, there wasn't even any door knocking, whinnying or stamping. Chase nudged Andromeda into a fast walk and kept a contact on his mouth, wary that the young horse had a habit of thinking he could get away with silly things like bolting in the other direction.
The arenas were empty other than Mark exercising Cosmic in the other jumping arena, a small course set up for the seasoned warmblood. Chase rode into the opposite one and halted the Nordanner again to tighten up the girth one last time.
He started with some simple warm ups, walking around and doing turns and halting exercises. Michelle appeared ten minutes later with Rahatiel, the pretty young stallion holding his head high. They both continued their warm up, Chase bringing Andromeda into a trot and doing some turning exercises with him to get him to listen.
It wasn't long before the heat started to get to him. It wasn't that the day was too hot as a whole, but doing rising trot for ten minutes under the sun was enough for him to build up a sweat. He halted Andy near the edge of the arena and peeled his shirt up over his head, tossing it down onto the railing before taking up his reins again. Just as he went to set off again Rahatiel cantered past and he heard a faint yet distinct “shit” from Michelle's mouth. He watched the stallion's form slip as Michelle kept her eyes down, her cheeks flushed and her bottom lip between her teeth. He'd have apologised if it didn't set off some deep sense of pride.
Chase continued his work with Andromeda, trotting him in weaving patterns around the arena, and watched Michelle from the corner of his eye. Rahatiel was getting better with his leads but she was still struggling to correct him, dropping him back into a trot from the canter to try again. As Chase turned from the edge across the middle again and Rahatiel cantered past behind, the stallion was once again on the wrong leg. “Wrong lead!” he called over to her.
“I know!” she shot back, “and will you put on a damn shirt!” He smirked to himself and turned Andromeda up the centre line, curving around to go past her again as she trotted Rahatiel towards the corner.
“No, no I don't think I will,” he said as they passed. He heard her mumbles of despair behind her and watched as her horse went onto the wrong lead again. Rahatiel was just a little too extravagant and eager to show off his paces, ignoring the leg aids.
Chase turned onto the outside track again in the same direction as Michelle and nudged Andromeda into a canter. The Nordanner had a long, light stride that was tucked underneath, his neck arched strongly and his head tucked in. Aithne wanted him to compete in dressage purely because he looked so stunning when he was working hard. “Just pull up,” he called to Michelle as he rode alongside her, Rahatiel in trot again. She nodded silently and eased into a walk and then a halt. “Want some help with this?”
“I don't know,” she said with a sigh, running a hand through her damp hair. “He gets it sometimes and then other times he's too busy showing off to actually listen.”
“It's okay, we've had a few like that,” he said with a smile. Devil had been too busy wanting to go fast to actually do anything other than gallop around and Urb had only wanted to prance and look pretty. “Come on, we'll work on it.” She thought for a minute before nodding slowly and smiling.
“Alright, but please, put a shirt on, it's distracting,” she laughed. He winked at her cheekily before nudging Andromeda forwards to go and retrieve his shirt. He guessed he could strip off later on when they were mucking out stalls.
