This year has been the first one I ever go out on Carnavales (Carnival in spanish). At first I didn't know what to expect but a friend of mine insisted and so I went.
These carnival days on the Canary Islands, where I live, have nothing to do with their equivalence in other european countries, as far as I know. It's THE party of the year, a mega hype thing. In the evening everybody dresses up and goes to the capital until the sun comes up. There is music everywhere, spectacles, shows, parades... Everybody is in a good mood, dancing, singing and having fun.
Of course there is always the typical street fight on in a dark alley and many (young) people commit alcohol abuse. But if you know where to stand and are never alone there's a big chance you're gonna have a great time. At least that has been my experience so far.
