Description
I introduce you to Archibald, a Singer 28 handcrank made in 1925. This is my first complete restoration. I've rebuilt several machines but haven't rebuilt the mechanics, refinished the paint and restored the case all on a single machine.I got this machine in rather good shape, so it was a matter of cleaning the mechanics and polishing the shiny bits. Then I cleaned the dirty clear coat (shellac) down to the black paint (being careful not to damage the gold) and applied a new coat using the French Polish method of applying shellac. The shellac I used is amber coloured, giving it a richer gold color on the decals and it also yellowed any silver spots on the decals.
The wood case took a lot of work. The top was a different color then the base, and the base had chipped off veneer and the bottom panel was also warping and cracked. So I stripped off the old finish (probably shellac also) and sanded both halves until they were the same oak color. Then I repaired the chipped veneer on the base by cutting off the old and replacing it with a dark band of walnut. After the patching was finished I restained the two halves at the same time, using a multi step process that gives it a nice reddish brown. I finished with a couple coats of Tung oil, making the wood very attractive while preserving the tactile feeling of wood. The warped bottom panel was punched out and used as a template to cut some hardboard that makes a brilliant substitute.

Singer sewing machines is amazing! Not simple machine, but some art-object and pleasure to work with it...

Haha! That's such an understatement. I've been spending sooo much time on my current restoration, redoing Fk ups and waiting for this and that to cure or the weather to be right, etc. I'm definitely looking forward to finishing it... and I will be surprised if I do it before winter.

I have this exact same model, in a similar condition. Took me about 18 months to clean it, oil it, find all the missing parts (there were a lot of missing parts) and get it back to something resembling new condition.Β

Nice! Yup, all tolled it's a lot of work, but once you're done it's enough to last another half-century

Mine isn't quite as old as yous (1936), but it's otherwise, identical, including decals & crank and everything else. I even found all the attachments, accessories, the puzzle-box...Β

This is beautiful! Real craftsmanship. I've always wanted to learn to do these things.Β
How did you begin? I've been thinking about just buying a cheap end table from a thrift store and practicing on things like that.Β

How did I begin sewing machine restoration? Mostly just because I prefer using the older machines, and the affordable ones have been well used and don't work so well. So I clean 'em up and get 'em going again There's many books on antique furniture restoration but one I've been enjoying quite a bit is called "The Furniture Bible" byΒ Christophe PournyΒ and discusses finding, restoring and caring for furniture.

Or shoot me a note if you ever decide to. I have a Tippmann Boss but it's specialty is the heavy leathers and I'd really like something faster for fabric and softer leather grades

What's the lightest fabric you sew/ plan on sewing?
π: 0 β©: 1
Silverskullguy In reply to Marcusstratus [2015-05-30 02:49:42 +0000 UTC]
I'd plan on sewing lighter oz leathers to fabrics like canvas or denim.
So something that would say do a 4-5oz leather to a denim fabric

this is awesome indeed,
i have to admit, these machines are one of the best, specially when using heavy duty fabrics, it even can handle leather,
great to see this machine,

Marcusstratus In reply to Philluppus [2015-05-23 13:17:06 +0000 UTC]
The thing about these machines, they were made before Planned Obsolescence was invented, so the steel is super hard and the tolerances fine. That's why even a small domestic like this can handle a number of materials
