Description
For the Fall of 2010, when I was still in school, I took a denim class where I learned about the history of denim and it's significance in our culture now. Anywho, for one of the projects I came up with a design for workwear trousers [link] They have some great features, but I improved upon this design when I made the pants shown in this deviation. They're called Genes because I wanted to reference back to Jeans name origin Genoa, Italy. They're a looser pant leg/ boot cut style, but I've added features like the gores in the knees and the yokes at the back to allow for a good looking fit and comfortable flexibility. I also put leather on the bottom of the pant legs and back pockets to prevent them from fraying and falling apart as cloth often does.
I'm planning on coming up with one more improved successor to this design and then I think I'll consider accepting commissions for a short run of Genes...

Of course you of all people have to have leather on your denim pants.
These are really neat, I like the fit and the design, and knowing you they're built to last forever. The only thing I'm not to sure about is the seams on the knees, I think they might be a bit uncomfortable if one has to be on their knees at all for any reason on a hard surface, the seams might bite at the knees a bit. Over all though, these are great!
Because I know you and your love of options and addons I have to ask, where are the D-rings?

Well actually, the seams on the knees aren't that bad, as far as comfort is concerned. They are prone to wearing out before the rest of the knee, but that's just because they're raised above the rest of the fabric.
Since I've had my utility belt (Wize Mans Belt in my gallery) I haven't really wanted to put Dee rings and the like on my clothes just because it becomes redundant... I have however been thinking about making some removable leather cargo pockets for a while now...

Hmm...removable leather cargo pockets...me likes this idea! And yeah, I can see how having your utility belt AND the D-rings would be a little...much. As far as the knees go...what if they were reinforced with a leather patch instead of the seams? Then they wouldn't be raised (so they wouldn't wear out as quickly), and they wouldn't be out of place as far as detailing because of the leather on the pockets and the bottom of the genes.

Well the seams on the knees aren't reinforcing a layer underneath. They're there to provide more flexibility, they create a bent knee that doesn't hinder movement. I have been thinking about ways to solve it though, and one idea I've had is to have one large knee panel, but that wouldn't look as neat.

Hmmm well I'm sure you'll figure it out. You've always been amazing at making things functional, long lasting, AND look good.

I love these, the leather bits around the bottom are fantastic, as well as the knees. Gosh, I'd like to buy a pair.

These are really cool. Particularly the knees A friend and I constantly talk about putting leather at the bottom of our pants/jeans to prevent fraying. Really love the way you've done incorporated into your design.

Oh yeah, the knee gores definitely help with sitting, climbing stairs and just about anything else that involves bending the knees, more brands should do it
Cheers!

Are you by chance former military? because I noticed your boots look an awful lot like the US military issued combat boots we wear

haha! somebody noticed! No, not military at all, but I am a fan of military surplus items. I like greens and browns and sturdy clothing which are often found in military surplus.
These are the boots for the US Marines (I think) that are made by Danner, which manufactures their shoes here in Portland, OR. They retail for $360.oo or so but I was able to get them discounted at the factory store for $80 during a special sale they had last year.

Thanks for the offer, but I don't think I have anything much in mind now... plus, I am more a fan of the vintage surplus, like from Vietnam and older.

May I suggest looking into adding gusset panels in the crotch... kind of like you can see in the jeans from Arbor Wear (www.arborwear.com). Really help out in the flexibility when stradling or taking large strides.
I own a couple pairs of these jeans and find the panel necessary for the work I do in the rigging of tall ships.
I may be interested in trying some of your when you finish the design.
Ill keep watching!

Daaaamn, those are some nice pants. I really like the look of the gusseted knees, but do the seams dig into your skin when you're kneeling? The extra-wide shaped belt look in the center back is a nice useful, stylish touch, and the topstitching looks great. I am a sucker for any topstitching (it just makes everything look so crisp) but contrast topstitching is my favorite.

Marcusstratus In reply to fortysecondarcha [2012-01-05 16:14:27 +0000 UTC]
Nope, the seams at the knees just feel flat and smooth on the inside because I turned the seam allowance to the outside. Aye, topstitching is the way to go, especially if you're going to use thicker thread like this instead of normal "all purpose" thread.

I want these so much, especially now that Carhartt decided to redesign my regular work pants. I can't find the version I like any more, they all have these silly small thigh pockets that don't fit my notebook anymore.
Are the bottoms of the legs pure leather, or leather overtop of the denim?
If you do decide to take commissions for these, I don't think I could resist.

Marcusstratus In reply to Stevebot-7 [2012-01-05 05:12:06 +0000 UTC]
The bottoms are just straight leather... I think I'll probably mention in a journal when I want to do a run of these pants for commissioners.

Would a crotch gore help with the bunching and stretching that occurs when crouched, sitting, etc (slightly visible in your 4th picture)? I never thought of doing knee gores, definitely want to try them out. You, sir, have a very sexy pair of pants.
π: 0 β©: 1
Marcusstratus In reply to Shukumei-dessy [2012-01-05 02:28:31 +0000 UTC]
it depends on how tight/baggy the pants are and how close to the crotch the inseam comes. In these pants I can crouch like this comfortably, but if they were tighter, or had a lower crotch depth it would need something like a gusset to be as comfortable.

Very nice work! I admire your attention to detail in all the things you make. What is the function of the design at the knees? Does it improve flexibility or keep them from wearing out so fast?
π: 0 β©: 1
Marcusstratus In reply to fashion-jerk [2012-01-05 00:09:01 +0000 UTC]
It allows for more flexibility at the knees. I've made this kind of pant with a reinforced knee, but prefer this treatment because I don't like my movement hindered.
