Yes, Dave Scott and Rusty Schweikart separated the Lunar Module Spider, and flew some distance away from the Command Module Gumdrop before jettisoning their descent stage and returning to the Command Module as if they were returning from the surface of the moon. It allowed them to practice the rendezvous maneuvers. In Apollo 10, the Same thing was done in lunar orbit as a practice for the Apollo 11 landing.
