Description
The Ardent Class Torpedo Cruiser design was ordered by the British Admiralty in 2242, partially in response to growing German and Soviet militarization. It was officially introduced into service seven years later and serves continuously with the Royal Navy. Built by Thornycroft as part of a comprehensive armaments order by the British Government, the Ardent Class continues the legacy of the shipbuilding firm's involvement with the Royal Navy.

Design and Role
The Ardent-Class was derived from the preceding Daring-Class, but designed with a larger internal volume and engine capacity in mind. Much of the prow-section was built around the primary armament of 2x6 large torpedo tubes with the option of extensive refits and modifications as new torpedoes were developed.

The Ardent's primary role is to engage enemy capital vessels, utilizing its superior sensor systems and guided torpedoes in surprise attacks. In larger fleets and battle-groups, the Ardent takes on a largely supportive role.
Despite its specialization, the Ardent maintains a decent AA capability and direct ship-to-ship weaponry, which, in conjunction with the small but potent airwing, makes it a surprisingly versatile class.

History
Despite its relatively small size for a cruiser, the Ardent-Class continues the trend towards larger, heavily armed warships in the Royal Navy. Originally intended to become a large destroyer primarily armed with torpedoes, the design underwent several extensive re-designs and re-classifications as the Admiralty added new requirements and conditions for the Ardent to fulfill. The long development process paid off, however, as the Ardent has proven itself as a highly capable and long-lasting vessel of the fleet.
