Description
The Arethusa-class cruiser is a staple of the Royal Navy, having been in service for almost twenty years and seeing continuous deployments across the systems of the United Kingdom. The versatile design combines decent ship-to-ship combat capability with the capacity to carry an entire airwing, allowing the vessel to conduct complex operations independently. Arethusa-Class cruisers are one of the largest classes deployed in remote regions of the Democratic Federation on deep-space patrol missions.Design and Role
The capabilities of the Arethusa-Class cruiser can be roughly divided into three categories: Carrier capacity, long-range fire support, and direct ship-to-ship engagements. The design favors the former two.
Capable of carrying an air wing of up to twelve multirole fighters, the Arethusa class follows the international trend towards "carrier cruisers" that were proved to be highly effective in recent conflicts. The comparatively large flight deck, launch assist systems and two additional hangar doors allow for rapid deployment and retrieval of the fighters, making hit-and-run attacks and defensive intercept missions much more efficient.
The ship's long-range fire support capability is focused around the forward-facing torpedo tubes, which come in both an industry-standard and superheavy variant. This allows the ship to send substantial volleys against an enemy target in support of ship-to-ship engagements.
In direct ship-to-ship engagements, the Arethusa relies on three triple "Jove" naval artillery batteries for its conventional firepower, as well as CWIS systems and swarm missile launchers for additional protection. The ship is well armored and heavily compartmentalized, allowing it to withstand enemy fire for a substantial amount of time. Its direct firepower, however, is rather limited in relation to its size.
Design History
Originally conceived as a scout-cruiser for the vanguard of the UK's heavier battle groups, the design revised early during its development due to the Royal Navy's shift in naval doctrine. Favoring smaller, independent strike groups over massed fleet deployments, the admiralty demanded a much broader mission profile for the Arethusa.
The addition of sophisticated torpedo launch systems, missile silos, and the expansion of the flight-deck necessitated a larger powerplant, leading eventually to an almost complete redesign of the ship's hull. The design ultimately approved for construction was far less specialized than originally intended, but performed well during early tests of the prototype and was subsequently adopted by multiple fleet headquarters for service in the border territories.
