Clouds of faint azure blew from the skyward passage, where the marches opened to the outer universe. Some said they carried the sheen of starlight, others saw merely reflections of the umbilical. But all agreed the azure clouds were peaceful, the first fruitful landing sites of the early settlers. Those streams were steady and favorable to the travelers, who made their way to the free trading cities on the edge of technocracy space. Novera, Atlan, and Sampo lay that way, bathed in soft blue light and rich from commerce.
In these peaceful parts, the crew enjoyed smooth sailing, a time of respite before the strife to come. They were all well aware of the rarity of this. All had heard the tales of long travels, the distant troubles, and dangers lurking deep below. But not here, not so close to the homely cities and rings, where the next post of civilization was never far away. The bustling, thriving web of life surrounded them and carried them to their destination.
